You no longer have to sit in your La-Z-Boy chairbored out of your mind. This fall, there’s some-thing for everyone in Selma.
Some places to see and go:Grab your family, strap on some roller skates andhead on down to the Selma Skating Rink, openFriday and Saturday from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.Admission $5.00. Private parties are also avail-able. Call 872-4290 for more information. Watcha movie, create a scrapbook or learn how to sewat the Larry D. Striplin Performing Arts Center.Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4
p.m. or Saturday and Sunday for specialevents, like weddings or receptions.
Senior citizens can enjoy a movie andpopcorn for only $1 admission.
Stretch your artistic skills at theCeramic Art Program. For a fee of$20, you can enroll in classes year-round. Office hours are Tuesdayand Wednesday from 9 a.m. until
noon, Tuesday afternoons at 3p.m. until 5:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 7 p.m.

How to enroll your child inthe Selma City or DallasCounty School SystemEnrolling your child in either school system issimple, once you know what zone you live in.Zoning charts for each school system may befound at the Dallas County or Selma school sys-
tem superintendent’soffice.

dency. Theseproofs may be

Applying for an Alabamaautomobile tag
Before applying for an Alabama car tag,residents must obtain an Alabama driver’slicense for Dallas County and car insur-ance for Alabama. Once these itemshave been acquired, bring both itemswith you to the first floor of the DallasCounty Courthouse auto tag counter. If you moved from either a differentAlabama county or from out of state, bringtwo utility bills and thecar
title, plus yourdriver’s license and proof of car
insurance. A utility bill is a light, gas, orwater bill.
Employees will also walk to your car tocheck that the vehicle identification number,
VIN, to ensure the numbers match onthe title and car.

cash,check orVISA/MasterCard.
Specialty license platesare available. Choose vanity plate atwww.ador.state.al.us. Under the divisionsand services tab, click on motor vehicles,and then “search or reserve a personal-ized tag message.”

Garbage pick up in SelmaCity and Dallas County
Selma CityFor a new garbage pick up location, visit the Taxand License office on the first floor of City Hall.Bring a photo ID and a water application orrecent water bill.
Services are $12 a month. One garbage cart isprovided for each residence. Additional cartscan be purchased for $50 each.
Medical backdoorservice is alsoavailable at no costwith a note from aphysician, and $12extra per month forothers. Pleaseinform the office ifthis service is needed. Pickup is availableMonday throughFriday. Contact theSelma Public WorksDepartment for a fullschedule.

Dallas CountyDallas County does not have a countywide pickup service, but residents can bring householdtrash to one of two solid waste transfer stations inthe county. Stations are located in Orrville at theintersection of County Road 3 and County Road
33 and on Highway 41,approximately five miles
south of Selma.The Orrville locationis open Mon., Tues.,Wed., Fri. and Sat.,and the Highway
41 location isopen Mon.through Sat.
Both stationsoperate from 7a.m. until 4 p.m.

History of Dallas CountyDallas County was created by the Alabama Territorial legislature on February 9, 1818
from portions of the Creek cession of August 9, 1814. It was named for Alexander J. Dal-las of Pennsylvania, U.S. Treasury Secretary.
Dallas County is located in the Black Belt region of the west-central portion of thestate, and is traversed by the Alabama River. Dallas is bordered by Perry, Chilton, Au-tauga, Lowndes, Wilcox, and Marengo counties. It currently encompasses 975 squaremiles.
Originally, the county seat was at Cahaba, which also served as the state capital for abrief period. In 1865, the county seat was transferred to Selma.
Other towns and communities include Marion Junction, Orrville, Sardis, Selmontand Valley Grande.
