Assignment Title – The Skeletal System (P1, P2)
The purpose of this assignment is to: Understand the structure of the skeletal system, along with the function of
the skeleton.
Scenario: As a sports therapist you regularly apply anatomical knowledge to sports and exercise activities. Conduct
practical activities to explore the anatomy and physiology of the body systems.
Task: Criteria Evidence
1. Using the internet or class text book, identify where
the following should be found: Cranium, clavicle, ribs,
sternum, humerus, radius, ulna, scapula, ilium, pubis,
ischium, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges, femur,
patella, tibia, fibula, tarsals, metatarsals, (vertebral
column – cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, coccyx)
(You will be given a set of stickers and you must place them
on another pupil, along with describing them.]
In a powerpoint presentation describe the following:
Axial and appendicular skeleton, long, short and flat bones,
irregular bones, sesamoid bones. Describe function of
skeletal system. (Support, protection, attachment for
skeletal muscle, source of blood cell production, store of
minerals).
P1

Teacher Witness statement
2. Continue with your PowerPoint presentations and
describe:
Three Classifications of a joint and the amount of
movement available at each (include movement allowed
at each of the synovial joints)

Assignment Title – The Muscular system (P3, P4, M1, D1)
The purpose of this assignment is to: Produce a poster highlighting each of the major
muscles in the body. Understand the functions of the muscular system, including the different
fibre types and a sport associated with them.
Scenario: As a sports therapist you regularly apply anatomical knowledge to sports and exercise activities.
Conduct practical activities to explore the anatomy and physiology of the body systems.
Task: Criteria Evidence
1. Create a poster identifying the location of the muscles
named, including the 3 types of muscles (cadiac,
skeletal and smooth): (biceps, triceps, deltoids,
pectoralis major, rectus abdominis, rectus femoris,
vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius,
semimembranosus, semitendinosus, biceps femoris,
gastrocnemius, soleus, tibialis anterior, erector spinae,
teres major, trapezius, latissimus dorsi, obliques, and
gluteus maximus).
P3
Poster
2. In a word document describe the functions of the
muscular system (movement, agonist, antagonist,
fixator, and synergist), types of contraction
(isometric, concentric, eccentric, isokenetic) and the
different fibre types (Type 1, Type 2a and Type 2b),
include their characteristics and the sports they are
associated with.
To gain a merit grade you must explain the function of
the muscular system and the three different muscle
fibres.
Analyse the function of the muscular system and the
different muscle fibre types. (Practical examples
should be provided where appropriate)

Assignment Title – The Cardio respiratory and Energy Systems (P5, M2, P6, M3, P7, M4,
D2)
The purpose of this assignment is to: Understand how the heart (cardiovascular system) and
lungs (respiratory system) work, along with applying the three energy systems to a different
sport and exercise.
Scenario: As a sports therapist you regularly apply anatomical knowledge to sports and exercise activities.
Conduct practical activities to explore the anatomy and physiology of the body systems.
Task: Criteria Evidence
1. In a word document describe the structure and
function of the cardiovascular system; you must
include all of the items in the unit content.
Draw by hand or use the computer to produce the
structure of the heart including the blood vessels.
To achieve a merit grade you must examine the
cardiovascular system, along with explaining how it
works and how each part of the system is designed to
meet its function.

2. In a word document describe the structure and
function of the respiratory system; you must include
all of the items in the unit content, including
gaseous exchange and the mechanism of breathing.
To achieve a merit grade you must examine the
respiratory system and explain how it works, along with
explaining how each part of the system is designed to
meet its function.
