ANGRAU, Guntur e-Newsletter E-mail : [email protected] Vol. 2 (2), 2018 The ANGRAU, since its establishment in 1964, is striving to improve the share of agriculture in Andhra Pradesh economy by providing leadership through its mandate of teaching, research and extension. Graduate education is aiming on strengthening professionalism and entrepreneurship in three faculties, while post graduate education is emphasizing on conducting research relevant to agro- climatic situations and current socio- economic needs. ANGRAU research mandate focuses on constantly generating and improving technologies for increasing production in agriculture. The thrust areas of research include cropping systems, multi- enterprise farming systems, crop weather studies, good agricultural practices in major crops, developing hybrids of certain crops, combining resistance/ tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses, location specific technologies to augment crop production, climate resilient agriculture, pest surveillance, drone technology for assessing crop health including extent of damage, soil and water conservation, nano technology in pesticide formulations, research on high value crops, post-harvest management in major crops, processing and value addition, etc. Extension division concentrates on group approach and disseminates new knowledge, scientific information on improved technologies and innovations through line departments of the State Government and Print & Electronic media. Extension scientists conduct need based trainings for capacity building of multi- purpose extension officers (MPEOs) and AEOs of Department of Agriculture. ZREAC and SLTP meetings have been conducted to formulate research and extension strategies and action plans for the Kharif and Rabi seasons of 2018-19. Action Plan workshop of KVKs of Andhra Pradesh was also organized by ANGRAU and 23 KVKs of ATARI- Zone X participated. A state level biosafety capacity building workshop was organized jointly by ANGRAU and Biotech Consortium India Ltd. (BCIL) aimed at disseminating project outcomes developed under the UNEP- GEF supported Phase II Capacity building project on bio safety implementation. During this quarter, ANGRAU organized ICAR sponsored short course on “Advanced Computational and Statistical Tools for Data Analysis”. Our newly recruited scientists have attended “Foundation Course for Faculty of Agricultural Universities” organized by NAARM. ANGRAU held a discussion on ‘Farmers Welfare and Food Security’ to derive the strategies for near future. ANGRAU and A.P. Cotton Association have jointly organized action plan meeting on Cotton crop management and discussed about the integrated management practices to be followed in cotton. In addition, ANGRAU was sanctioned with a world bank aided competitive grant for INR 24.10 cr from ICAR under National Agicultural Higher Education Project. nano technology in pesticide formulations, research on high

value crops, post-harvest management in major crops,

processing and value addition, etc. Extension division

concentrates on group approach and disseminates new

knowledge, scientific information on improved technologies

and innovations through line departments of the State

Government and Print & Electronic media. Extension

scientists conduct need based trainings for capacity building

of multi- purpose extension officers (MPEOs) and AEOs

of Department of Agriculture. ZREAC and SLTP meetings

have been conducted to formulate

biosafety capacity building workshop was organized jointly

by ANGRAU and Biotech Consortium India Ltd. (BCIL)

aimed at disseminating project outcomes developed under

the UNEP- GEF supported Phase II Capacity building

project on bio safety implementation. During this quarter,

ANGRAU organized ICAR sponsored short course on

“Advanced Computational and Statistical Tools for Data

Analysis”. Our newly recruited scientists have attended

“Foundation Course for Faculty of Agricultural

Universities” organized by NAARM. ANGRAU held a

discussion on ‘Farmers Welfare and Food Security’ to

derive the strategies for near future. ANGRAU and A.P.

Cotton Association have jointly organized action plan

meeting on Cotton crop management and discussed about

the integrated management practices to be followed in

cotton. In addition, ANGRAU was sanctioned with a

world bank aided competitive grant for INR 24.10 cr

from ICAR under National Agicultural Higher Education

Project. The project will be implemented for the next 3

years.

The two day Zonal Research and Extension AdvisoryCouncil meetings for 2018-19 were conducted by RARS,Lam (3rd and 4th April, 2018); RARS, Nandyal (9 th and10 th April, 2018); RARS, Tirupati (11th and 12th April,2018); RARS, Chintapalle (18th and 19th April, 2018);RARS, Anakapalle (20th and 21st April, 2018) and RARS,Maruteru (24th and 25th April, 2018) for their respectivezones. All the ZREACs were attended by the Director ofResearch, Director of Extension and Principal Scientistsof various crops. In his address, Dr. N.V. Naidu, Directorof Research highlighted the importance of ZREACmeetings and reviewed research results of 2017-18 andsuggested action plan for the year 2018-19. Whileaddressing the gathering, Dr. P. Rambabu, Director of

It was organized under the United NationsEnvironment Programme (UNEP) – Global EnvironmentFacility (GEF) supported Phase II Capacity Building Projecton Bio- Safety, being implemented by the Ministry ofEnvironment and Forests (MoEF). Chief Guest Dr. V.Damodara Naidu, V-C, ANGRAU stated that there areseveral concerns among public in accepting GM cropsspecifically for human consumption and this kind of initiativeswould help in providing factual information. Dr. Vibha Ahuja,Chief General Manager, BCIL, apprised the participantsthat the workshop was aimed at disseminating projectoutcomes developed under the UNEP- GEF supportedPhase II Capacity building project on bio safetyimplementation. Dr. N.V. Naidu, Director of Research,

Extension, urged the scientists and line department officialsto prepare action plan involving farm women in variousextension activities, as they constitute nearly half ofagricultural work force. Joint Directors of Agriculturepresented highlights of agriculture scenario in their districts.Based on the group discussions on major crops withscientists, officials from Agriculture Department andprogressive farmers research and extension gaps wereidentified and action plans were prepared for the ensuingKharif and Rabi seasons. The scientists of DAATTCs, KVKs, ARSs, RARSs and Collegeshave actively participated in Department of Agriculture organizedEruvaka Pournami’ programme held in their respective districtson 28.6.2018. Sri N. Chandrababu Naidu, Hon’ble ChiefMinister of A.P inaugurated the programme at Ravikantipetavillage of Srikakulam District and participated in few agricultureoperations. Exhibitions were organized and Farmers- scientistinteraction meetings were held educating the farmers on bestmanagement practices in crops.

‘Eruvaka Pournami’ Celebrated

Kisan Melas were organized at RARS, Maruteru (07.4.2018); RARS,Chintapalle (19.4.2018) and ARS, Ragolu (22.4.2018). Farmer-Scientist interaction and Agricultural Technology exhibition includingfarm machinery were held during these Kisan Melas.

‘ODLC Certificate Course’Inaugurated

The newly established Open and DistanceLearning Centre has started two certificatecourses namely ‘Organic Farming’ and‘Terrace Gardening’. Initially, an interactionmeeting was held with ProgrammeCoordinators of KVKs to finalizeguidelines for conduct of certificatecourses on 13.4.2018. Further, ODLCinaugurated its first certificate course on‘Organic Farming’ on 22.6.2018 at Lam,Guntur; KVK Ghantasala; KVK,Kalyanadurgam; KVK, Nellore; KVK,Undi; KVK, Banavasi; KVK, Kalikiri;KVK, Amadalavalasa; KVK, Darsi andKVK, Utukuru. A total of 173 farmersregistered for this three months course andattended the first contact class held on22.6.2018. The syllabus book on organicfarming was distributed to registeredfarmers.

ICAR Sponsored Short Course onStatistics

The Department of Statistics and Computer Applications, AgriculturalCollege, Bapatla organised an ICAR sponsored 10 days short courseon “Advanced Computational and Statistical Tools for Data Analysis”during 21st -30th May, 2018. A total of 15 teachers/scientistsparticipated from various SAUs and ICAR Institutes of India. Duringthe course, Statistical Methods, Experimental Designs, MultivariateAnalysis by using SPSS, SAS and R packages were taught by theresource persons. Inaugural function was held on 21st May, 2018and Dr D. Lokanadha Reddy, Associate Dean presided over thefunction. Dr. J. Krishna Prasadji, Dean of Agriculture was the ChiefGuest and Dr. D. Balaguraviah, Dean of Post Graduate Studies wasthe Distinguished Guest. Dr. Krishna Prasadji emphasized theimportance of statistical tools and the need for learning computerpackages to analyse the experimental data. Dr. V. Srinivasa Rao,Course Director; Dr Sk. The Action plan workshop of KVKs of Andhra Pradeshfor 2018- 19 was jointly organized by ANGRAU, Gunturand ICAR- ATARI, Zone X, Hyderabad during 21st –22nd May, 2018 at Lam, Guntur. The Chief Guest, Dr. V.Damodara Naidu, V-C, ANGRAU in his address advisedthe extension scientists to educate the farmers towardsjudicious use of fertilizers and pesticides. He alsomentioned the need to spread the message to the farmersto avoid usage of phosphorus fertilizers as top dressing.Dr. Y.G. Prasad, Director, ATARI, Zone X spoke aboutthe new schemes of ICAR to be implemented by KVKsacross the state. Dr. Prasad told that each KVK has tospread knowledge and technologies to 6000 farmers oftheir jurisdiction. Dr. P. Rambabu, Director of Extension,ANGRAU in his speech stated that 684 KVKs acrossIndia act as hub of extension in their respective districtsand coordinated activities with all the line departmentsshould be carried out for the benefit of farmers. TheProgramme Coordinators and Subject Matter Specialistsof 23 KVKs of A.P. presented their work done report of

2017-18 and action plan of their technical programmefor 2018-19.

V-C advised that KVK scientists should takeup foundation seed production and supply to adoptedvillages. Dr. N.V. Naidu, Director of Research told thescientists to monitor minikit trials and urged the scientists tomaintain rapport with Dept. of Agriculture, seed companies,NGOs and monitor pests and diseases well in advance.Dr. P. Rambabu, Director of Extension spoke about theICT tools that can be used in extension and told that thescientists should empower field level extension functionariesof the Dept. of Agriculture with technical knowledgethrough training programmes. One day workshop on “Personality Development” wasorganized at Agricultural College, Mahanandi on 28.05.2018.Eminent Writer and Speaker Sri Yandamoori Veerendranathwas the resource person. Topics such as how to be successful,ingredients for success, tips for writing an exam, how to faceinterviews, developing memory and wisdom were dealt bythe resource person. Dr. B. Farmers participated in Webcasting with Hon’ble PM through KVKs

The ANGRAU and A.P. Cotton Association have jointlyorganized action plan meeting on 08.6.2018 at Lam,Guntur. Dr. P. Rambabu, Director of Extension presidedthe meeting and Sri. M. Lakshmi Narayana, Member,Board of Management, ANGRAU was the Chief Guest.Dr. N.V. Naidu, Director of Research; Sri P. RaghavaRao, President, A.P. Cotton Association and Smt. M.Vijaya Bharathi, JDA, Guntur dist. were the dignitariespresent. Dr. N.V. Naidu stated that demonstrations inprogressive farmers’ fields will be taken up to showcasethe advantages of integrated management practices incotton. Dr. P. Rambabu informed that DAATTCs andKVKs will train farmers, MPEOs and AEOs aboutintegrated management practices in cotton. Smt. Vijaya

Bharathi said that the Department of Agriculture willdistribute pheromone traps free of cost to eradicate pinkboll worm in cotton. Sri Raghava Rao stated that cottonassociation will bear the entire costs of demonstration plotsin farmers’ fields. Sri Lakshmi Narayana urged the farmersto make use of various apps for cotton crop managementpractices.

All the KVKsof A.P. organized for farmers’ participation and live telecastdiscussion was watched by the farmers of A.P. In hisaddress, V-C said that NABARD funds of 300 crorerupees will be utilized to create infrastructure at all collegesand 100 crores will be spent to construct administrativebuilding at Lam, Guntur. V-C told that by the end ofDecember all the colleges will have state- of- the- artfacilities. V-C directed the Associate Deans to collaboratewith Agricultural Skill Development Council of India andupgrade skills of students. The United Nations and Food and Agriculture Organizationhave announced to commemorate May 20, 2018 as theFirst ever ‘World Honey Bee’ Day in order to spreadawareness about honey bee and bee keeping. In thisconnection, KVK, Darsi; KVK, Rastakuntubai; KVK,Reddipalli; KVK, Garikapadu and DAATTC, Peddapuramcelebrated the World Honey Bee Day. The Scientists ofthe respective units spoke about the role of honey bees incrop pollination and further emphasized that the future offood security also depends upon the bees. The ANGRAU observed 4th International Yoga Day on21.6.2018 across all centres and teaching and non-teaching staff participated. Dr. V. Damodara Naidu,Hon’ble V-C and University Officers attended the eventat Administrative Office, Lam, Guntur. In his address, Dr.Damodara Naidu spoke about the importance of yoga indaily life and how it benefits mental and spiritual well-being. Sri K. Midterm project review and project advisorycommittee (PAC) meeting of ‘Satellite basedRice Monitoring System for Andhra Pradesh’was held on 27.06.2018 at Andhra PradeshSecretariat, Velagapudi. Sri. B. Rajsekhar,IAS, Special Chief Secretary(Agriculture andCooperation) chaired the meeting. Sri. M.Muralidhar Reddy, Special Commissioner ofAgriculture, Dr. N. V. Naidu, Director ofResearch, ANGRAU, Officials from IRRI,Department of Agriculture, A.P. Directorate of Economicsand Statistics have participated in the review meeting. Inhis address, Dr. Naidu presented the over view of theproject activities to members. The Ministry of Agriculture Cooperation and FarmersWelfare has launched the two months programme ‘KrishiKalyan Abhiyan’ commencing from 1st June 2018 to 31st

July 2018 in 117 aspirational districts of the country. Theprogramme was focused on giving a boost to agricultureand allied activities in the aspirational districts. Each districtwill cover 25 villages. An action plan comprising of activitiesof the three departments namely Department ofAgriculture, Cooperation & Farmers Welfare (DAC &FW), Animal Husbandry Dairying & Fisheries(DAHD&F) and Dept. of Agricultural Research &Education (DARE) will be implemented during this periodwith Krishi Vigyan Kendras as the nodal point. In AndhraPradesh, three districts were selected for implementation.Accordingly, KVK, Rastakuntubai, KVK, Kadapa andKVK, Kondempudi conducted training programmes andactivities such as distribution of minikits, soil health cardsand agricultural implements, making of NADEP pits,

insurance from Rabi 2018-19 on pilot basis in one ortwo districts. B) Area estimation of dominant non-ricecrop (i.e., groundnut) from Kharif 2018-19 in all thedistrict of Rayalaseema. C) Operationalization of SRMSdata into decision making from Kharif 2018-19 forentire Andhra Pradesh. Later, the IRRI team methonourable V-C, Dr. V. The 5th Project Review Steering Group Meeting to reviewAnnapurna Krishi Prasara Seva – a joint initiative ofDigital India Corporation, New Delhi, ANGRAU andProfessor Jaashankar Telangana State AgriculturalUniversity was held on 15 th May, 2018 at PJTSAU,Hyderabad under the chairmanship of Dr. Y.G. Prasad,Director, ATARI (ICAR). Dr. P. Rambabu, Director ofExtension, ANGRAU; Dr. D.Raji Reddy, Director ofExtension, PJTSAU; Dr. V.K. Bhatia, Director ofResearch and Dr. T.S.Anurag, Principal ResearchScientist, DIC were the PRSG members attended. TheAKPS services are being offered to the registered farmersin all the districts of Andhra Pradesh through the KVKsand DAATTCs. The status of AKPS in both A.P. and

Telangana during 2017-18 and action plan for 2018-19were discussed. Dr. P. Punna Rao, PAIO has presentedthe AKPS status in A.P. during the meeting.

Dr. K. Yella Reddy also presented apaper “Improving water use efficiency for sustainabledevelopment” in “Transforming Agricultural ExtensionSystems – Towards Achieving the SDGs for Global

Impact” Conference held during 10th – 11th May, 2018at Kandy, Srilanka.
