ANGRAU, Guntur e-Newsletter ANGRAU E-mail : [email protected] Vol. 2 (3), 2018 The ANGRAU which has celebrated Golden Jubilee in 2014, is moving forward by consistently improving on many fronts that have a bearing on achieving academic excellence, good reputation for research and effective network for transfer of technologies. On the academic front, our students have excelled in the national competitive examinations such as GATE, ARS, NET, SRF and JRF and are actively involved in NSS activities. Students’ Counselling and Placement Cells are functioning in all the colleges. Many of our students are employed in the SAUs, ICAR, State Dept. of Agriculture, corporate sector, reputed non- govt. organizations and in key positions in international universities. ANGRAU Central Library at Guntur has introduced Radio Frequency Identification System (RFID) software for efficient management. Open and Distance Learning Centre (ODLC) of ANGRAU started it’s another certificate course on ‘Terrace Gardening’ during September, 2018. The research programme of the university is mainly applied and adaptive research. The Directorate of Research advocated contingency crop plans for deficit rainfall situation in the State in the 1 st week of August 2018. ANGRAU has grabbed "Forecasting Agricultural Output using Space, Agro-meteorology and land based observations (FASAL)" project of IMD and “Effective delivery of nutrients, insecticides and fungicides through nano particles and its effect on uptake and yield in groundnut and chilli” project of ICAR. The Scientists of Extension Units are actively involved in capacity building of field extension functionaries of Dept. of Agriculture, besides advocating the best management practices towards doubling of farmers’ income. All the KVKs have organized SHG members’ participation in the month of July, 2018 for the live telecast of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s interaction with women members. ‘Krishi Kalyan Abhiyan programme is implemented in the selected three KVKs. ANGRAU has utilized a total of 56.62 crore rupees of RKVY funds from 2013-'14 to 2017-'18 for various research and extension activities. Seven KVKs of A.P. are selected as weather stations by ICAR and a meeting was held with Dr. K.J. Ramesh, Director General, IMD at Guntur in the month of August, 2018 about future meteorological services. I have attended Annual Zonal Workshop of KVKs for Zone X, held at Hyderabad in September, 2018 and our KVKs were recognized for their best services, during the workshop. We have recently celebrated 'Independence Day’ and ‘NSS Formation Day’ with great enthusiasm. The University scientists have noticed Fall Army Worm incidence in Maize in A.P. and measures are being taken to create awareness among farming community. An interaction meeting was organized on 27.9.2018 at Guntur involving CIMMYT, NIPHM and plant protection scientists, to prepare a strategic plan to counter this serious pest. The University scientists are motivated to rededicate on the new challenges and demands of the farming community that are emanating with local and global changes. Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has interacted withmembers of SHGs under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National RuralLivelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) across India via video conferencingon 12.7.2018. All the KVKs of A.P. organized for SHG members’participation and live telecast discussion (Doordarshan) was watchedby the SHG members of A.P. The Prime Minister had an hour longinteraction session with SHG women and discussed about the variousactivities being undertaken by SHG members under DAY-NRLM andhow it has impacted their lives.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh hasconducted one day workshop with a theme‘Global Competitiveness for CapacityBuilding’ on 4th August, 2018 atTarakarama Stadium, Tirupati.Competitions were held to mark the‘Jnanabheri’ workshop at S.V. AgriculturalCollege from 02.08.2018 to 03.08.2018.In addition to the competitions, stall wasorganised by the University students,highlighting achievements alongside the innovations beingcarried out at ANGRAU. Also, provisions in the governmentschemes and innovative experiments/projects undertakenby the students were on display in the stall. Honb’le CM

The Directorate of Extension, ANGRAU has conductedthe review meeting of Innovative Farmers NetworkCoordinators for the year 2017-2018 at AgriculturalCollege, Bapatla on 03.7.2018. Dr. N.V. Naidu, Directorof Research, ANGRAU was the Chief Guest. Dr. P. RamBabu, Director of Extension was the special guest.Dr. B. Vijayabhinandana, University Head (Extension),ANGRAU explained about objectives, importance andpurpose of the review meeting. Dr. Naidu stated that theIFN Coordinators have to spread the informationeffectively by showing technology to the other farmers intheir own situation. The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of Indiahas sanctioned the project entitled “Establishment of Biotech-KISAN Hub at Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University,Guntur” with a budget of Rs. 114.30 lakhs. The Launchworkshop was organized to discuss about the modusoperandi of the project implementation on 05.07.2018.Dr. T. Srinivas, Principal Investigator stated that yield gapsin groundnut and pulse crops in Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam,Kurnool and Anantapaur districts will be analysed and toreduce yield gaps, demonstrations on management aspectswill be conducted in farmers’ fields. RFID:Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)software for Central Library, Guntur was inaugurated byV-C, ANGRAU on 12.09.2018 in the presence of Deanof Student Affairs & University Librarian. On this occasion,V-C said that RFID system is efficient than bar codingand can be used to identify, track, sort or detect libraryholdings at the circulation desk and helps in the daily stockmaintenance.

As a part of the project, one day orientation to theidentified demo farmers of Srikakulam district (60 farmersfrom 25 villages) was conducted at KVK, Amadalavalasaon 11.09.2018.The Chief Guest, Dr. N.V.Naidu, Directorof Research has discussed on the critical interventions ofpulses production, while, Dr. P. Punna Rao talked on KisanHub project objectives, whereas, Dr. T.V. Sridhar spokeon roles and repsonsibilites of fellowship farmers as well asDemo farmers. ‘Krishi Kalyan Abhiyaan’ atKVKs

The KVKs- Rastakuntubai, Kadapa andKondempudi have conducted theresidential training programmes on ‘BeeKeeping, Mushroom Cultivation andKitchen Gardening’ and activities such asdistribution of horticultural saplings, wastedecomposer, soil health cards andagricultural implements; construction ofNADEP Compost pits,100 % coverage ofbovine vaccination for Foot and Mouthdisease, 100% coverage of sheep and goatfor eradication of PPR and artificialinsemination saturation, etc were taken upfrom July 1st, 2018 to August 15th, 2018as per the action plan developed incoordination with line departments inselected aspirational villages of the threedistricts. The three KVKs combinedlyreceived appreciation certificate fromDr.Trilochan Mahapatra, Hon’bleSecretary (DARE) & Director General,ICAR for their active involvement in theKKA programme during KVKs AnnualZonal Workshop of Zone X held from Sept20th to Sept 22nd, 2018 at Hyderabad.

Contingency Crop Plan MeetingThe crop and seasonalconditions of seven districtsviz., Chittoor, Kadapa,Anantapuramu, Kurnool,Nellore, Prakasam andGuntur districts werediscussed during thecontingency crop planmeeting held at Kadapa on03.08.2018. Dr. N.V.Naidu, Director of Research, ANGRAU presided the meeting and saidthat out of 13 districts, eight districts received low rainfall and cropcoverage was very low in these districts. The MPEOs will be apprisedabout drought situation and they shall advocate the remedial measuresto be followed by the farmers to overcome drought, he added. SriMuralidhar Reddy, IAS, Special Commissioner, Dept. of Agriculturestated that farmers should think about cultivating alternate crops if thereis no rainfall by the end of August. Muralidhar Reddy said that fieldlevel officers should encourage farmers to insure their crops. Dr. P.Rambabu, Director of Extension stated that the KVKs and DAATTCsshould educate the farmers on appropriate measures to be taken, basedon the location specific requirements. Joint Directors of Agriculture ofseven districts; Dr. K.V. Rao ,Principal Scientist from CRIDA;Programme Coordinators of KVKs/ Coordinators of DAATTCs ofseven districts; Associate Directors of Research of RARS, Tirupati,Nandyal and Lam; Principal Scientists of Crops and Principal Scientist(Agro Meteorology) participated in the discussion.

The NSS UniversityAdvisory Council Meetingfor the year 2018-19 wasconducted at Adminis-trative Office, Guntur on

20.07.2018. Dr. V. Damodara Naidu, V-C, ANGRAU andChief Guest stated that the NSS helps to inculcate self-discipline in students and appreciated the NSS volunteersof the University for their services. Dr. S.R. Koteswara Rao,Dean of Student Affairs andOrganizing Secretary, NSS divulgeddetails of budget spent in the year2017-'18 towards NSS activities andaction plan for the year 2018-19. SriR. Gokula Krishnan, Director, NSSRegional Directorate, Hyderabad saidthat Skill Development Activities shallbe given importance in the action plan.

Dr. P. Ramachandra Rao, NSS State Officer for A.P. statedthat Additional Units will be provided if necessary and thebest volunteers will be given prizes on 24th of September(NSS Formation Day). Dr. Krishna Prasadji, Dean ofAgriculture; Dr. D. Bhasakara Rao, Registrar; Dr. A.S. Rao,Comptroller and Representatives of Associate Deans fromMadakasira, Tirupati, Naira, Bapatla and PulivendulaColleges participated in the discussion. On 24.09.2018,blood donation camps were organized by 10 colleges of

Dr. N.V. Naidu, Director ofResearch, stated that ANGRAU is taking special interestfor oilseeds cultivation and KVKs act as seed hub centresunder NFSM scheme. Dr. Y.G. Review Meeting on Progress of RKVYReview meeting on progress of Rashtriya Krishi VikasYojana Project was held on 13.08.2018 at APGC, Lam,Guntur. Dr. N.V. Naidu, Director of Research presided themeeting. The Chief Guest Dr. V. Damodara Naidu, V-C,ANGRAU stated that the infrastructure created with thefunds of RKVY should be effectively utilized for agriculturedevelopment in the State. Dr. N.V. Naidu apprised that Dept.of Agriculture & Cooperation, Govt. of A.P. has releasedRs. 18.3 crore in 2017-18 and Rs.13.0 crore in 2016-17and a total of Rs. 56.62 crore was released to ANGRAUunder RKVY funds from 2013-14 to 2017-2018. He alsostated that those funds were utilized for production ofbiofertilizers, micro irrigation research, post-harvest farmequipment, custom hiring centres, facilities in soil, water,chemical and bio fertilizers laboratories, capacity building

of farmers and AEOs, etc. Scientists of RARSs, ARSs,KVKs, Agricultural Colleges, Agricultural EngineeringColleges, Food Science and Technology Colleges made apower point presentation of work taken up under RKVYin their respective units. NARI Programme ImplementationNutri-sensitive Agricultural Resources and Innovations(NARI) programme was initiated by ICAR as womencentric programme to be implemented by the women andfor the women. Home scientists working in KVKs areplaying a major role in the implementation of thisprogramme. KVK, Rastakuntubai has prepared a road mapfor implementing the NARI programme in KVK adoptedvillages especially Doubling Farmers’ Income. A schedulewas developed for collecting data through baseline surveyto assess the nutritional status and dietary habits of tribalwomen. As a part of NARI programme, on 16.08.2018,nutrigarden kits were distributed to ICDS personnel ofAnganwadi Centres for developing nutrigarden in eachpanchayat. Further, training programme to tribal womenfarmers on importance of balanced diet and low costnutritious food was also conducted. Also, fortification oflocally available foods, enriching the existing diets of tribalfamilies and developing a nutricalendar is in progress.

Anti-Ragging Awareness Programme wasconducted on 09.08.2018 at Agricultural College,Mahanandi. Officials of Police Department, Mahanandi;Teaching staff; non -teaching staff and the students haveparticipated in this programme. Dr. B. Narendra,Associate Dean, explained the consequences of ragging

TulasiNaga Prasad, Sub-Inspector of Police, Mahanandiexplained about the various punishments to the peopleinvolved in ragging and advised all the students for not toinvolve in any anti-social activities. Dr. U. Vijaya BhaskarReddy, Assistant Professor and OSA, has narrated allthe activities and behaviours of the students which comeunder the category of ragging and the relevant punishmentsas listed in the Raghavan Committee constituted againstRagging. Dr. M. Srinivasa Reddy, Associate Professordelivered a speech on good behaviour and the importanceof good friend circle in the campus. All the students aredistributed with pamphlets printed with ragging relatedactivities and the punishments.

Independence Day CelebrationsThe ANGRAU has celebrated the 72nd Independence Dayof India in all its units and at Head Quarters on 15.08.2018.The day was celebrated in Administrative Office premises,for which Sri M. Lakshmi Narayana Member, Board ofManagement, ANGRAU was the Chief Guest. He said thatANGRAU will again achieve top position among SAUs ifthe teaching and non- teaching staff extend their cooperation.Dr. V. Damodara Naidu, Vice- Chancellor, ANGRAU,hoisted the tri-colour national flag and addressed thegathering. In his speech, V-C stated that ANGRAU initiatedprocess for establishment of National Rice Research Institutesub centre at Agricultural College, Naira and land allotmentprocess was completed. V-C apprised that ‘Agricos GreenProgramme’ was introduced in all colleges of the University.On this auspicious occasion, the V-C announced meritoriousawards to 27 non- teaching staff of ANGRAU working invarious centres across the state. The event was conductedby Dr. D. Bhaskara Rao, Registrar, ANGRAU.UniversityOfficers, teaching staff and non- teaching staff working atGuntur participated in the celebrations.

The KVK, Banavasi has developed mobile app “ANGRAUKVK Banavasi CFLDs” to cater the information needs ofredgram, bengalgram, blackgram, groundnut, castor andsafflower covering aspects such as Crop Production, Varietalinformation, Crop Protection and Market information, etc.It also provides information on other useful apps and detailsfor obtaining information in agriculture. Research project titled “Effective delivery of nutrients,insecticides and fungicides through nano particulatesand its effect on uptake and yield in groundnut andchilli” was sanctioned by the National AgriculturalScience Fund Project, ICAR, New Delhi to RARS,Tirupati. Principal investigator of the Project is Dr.T.N.V.K.V. Prasad, Principal Scientist (Soil Science).Total outlay of the project is 118 Lakh Rupees (OneCrore and Eighteen Lakh Rupees only) and will beimplemented for next three years in collaboration withDr. G. Sathisha, Principal Scientist (Soil Science),ICAR- IIHR, Bangalore.

The Open andDistance LearningCentre has started itssecond certificatecourse on ‘TerraceGardening’ on28.9.2018 at KVKsGhantasala; Nellore;Undi; Kalikiri andDarsi. ‘Swachhata Hi Sewa’Campaign by KVKs

FASAL Project sanctioned to AMFU, AnanthapuramuThe Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Government of India, New Delhi has sanctioned the Forecasting AgriculturalOutput using Space, Agro-meteorology and land based observations (FASAL) Project to Agro Meteorology Field Unit,Ananthapuramu. The mandate of the project is to forecast the yield of major field crops using remote sensing and agro-meteorology crop models. Initially, the project is sanctioned for five years duration and Rs. 5.0 Lakhs budget is allottedfor the year 2018-19. Principal Investigator is Dr. S.N. Malleswari and Co- PI is Dr. G. Narayanaswamy. Previously,RARS, Tirupati was sanctioned with FASAL project and AMFU, Anantapuramu is the second centre to implement theproject.

The “cleanliness is service” campaign to markMahatma Gandhi’s 150th Birth Anniversary wasinitiated by KVKs on 15.09.2018. Scientists and stafftook part in various cleanliness drives such as cleaningof office premises, organizing rallies, cleaning of dirton streets, eradication of parthenium, etc in KVKcampuses, schools and villages. The campaign wascontinued for two weeks upto October 2nd, 2018.

Training on Extension MethodsOne day training programme on ‘Field Extension Methods’ was conducted on 26.09.2018 at RARS, Tirupati for newlyrecruited scientists of KVKs and DAATTCs in Southern Zone. The Scientists were trained on PRA techniques, processdocumentation, flag method, OFTs and FLDs, etc. A total of 15 scientists from four KVKs and three DAATTCs attendedthe training. Dr. P. National Fish Farmers day was celebrated at KrishiVigyan Kendra, Amadalavalasa on 10.07.2018 to createawareness among public and tribal fish farmers aboutthe importance of fish farming as income generatingactivity.
