“Hi, I’m Jessamy, I graduated FCC last year. You may have seen me playing the keyboard on and off with Mrs Richo for worship over the last couple of years. Worship has been something I’ve enjoyed at school, church and by myself for a long ti me and I am constantly amazed by the power it has in more ways than we know.

This year I decided to take what’s called a Discipleship Training School, which is run by the YWAM (Youth With A Mission) in Hawaii, to specialise in music. The course goes for a total of 6 months, the fi rst three at the training base on Kona, Hawaii and the last three is outreach in another country yet to be decided!

I am very excited to meet with like-minded Christi ans and musicians to grow with them this year and step into the mission fi eld. I cannot wait to see what God will do. Thank you for supporti ng me in learning how to share the Word of God with others through music.”

The grassed area at the front of the College transformed into a beautiful and very harmonious garden on the 21 March as a reflection on Harmony Day. Special thoughtfulness is given on this day as a reminder and as a celebration of our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. Our diversity makes Australia a great place to live. This is also reflected within our College culture where diversity is celebrated and we praise our Heavenly Father for the many gifts and talents He has bestowed on every single one of us. It is a great time to remember that together we can value the uniqueness of each other and give our gifts back to God as a collective. The students from 4S also blessed the primary with a Harmony Day Assembly. This included a short drama and a few rounds of ‘Frére Jacques’ - which was sung very harmoniously!

Year 4S had a harmonious time demonstrating their best singing and drama skills to celebrate Australia and all the diversity our country displays. The audience journeyed through the discovery of just how different a culture we have and enjoyed a real laugh at the variety of words and phrases Australians use without realising others may not understand our lingo. Much confusion can occur indeed. The 4S class worked exceptionally hard and they sang ‘Frére Jacques’ in rounds. This demonstrated how we can sound better in harmony and how working together produces a sound like no other. Well done to all the Year 4’s on such an amazing performance, you certainly did us proud and the fun was contagious.

The coming together of four schools is not an easy feat; however, the Primary staff from Foundation Christian College, Mandurah Baptist College and the two Frederick Irwin Anglican School Campuses came together this week to collaborate and learn from each other. The Symposium this Semester was on Authentic and Effective Feedback. Special guest speakers from AISWA guided our discussions with an interactive presentation that followed with quality networking time between the different departments and teaching Year levels.

Story Dogs and Foundation Christian College would like to introduce to you, Janice and Millie. Story Dogs ran successfully for the first time in our College in 2017. We are delighted to have this wonderful programme start again in Term 2. Story Dogs will be held in the Library where Janice and Millie will sit with a student one-on-one and listen to them read. The mission behind Story Dogs is to make reading fun for children, so they become confident lifelong readers. When children read to a dog, the outcomes are amazing! It is a non-judgemental setting, the children's focus improves, their literacy skills increase and their confidence soars.

On Tuesday 20 March, Mrs Tompsitt and the students of 5T visited Parliament House and the Electoral Centre in Perth. The purpose of the visit was to see civics theory in action. They experienced great favour with known political figures who spent quality time with the students, allowing them to ask questions and further develop a love for Australian politics. The Mandurah Australian Labour Party representative, the Honourable David Templeman even posed for a photo and provided each student with a special parliamentary pin! Ferlin Espartinez from 5T was so fascinated with the day that she went home and reflected on her experience in cartoon form.

There have been many wonderful stories and exciting tales about camps in Middle School, with students greatly valuing theses adventures in independence. And sadly today, many schools are choosing not to include camps as part of their programme due to the high-risk nature of some of the activities. But thankfully, our College remains committed to providing high quality camps as a significant part of our school experiences for all our students. Camps encourage space for building great relationships, for being exposed to new and challenging environments and camps may become some of the best memories in a diverse school journey. Thank you all staff, parents and students for supporting this very valuable part of our programme.

At our college, we know that young people are known as ‘digital natives’ and seem very comfortable online, manoeuvring effortlessly between many digital sites and Apps, to effectively complete highly engaging, complex and interactive assessments in many subject areas- and this is outstanding! At school, we have Apple Classroom to monitor the use of iPads during lessons and imessage, Snapchat and Instagram are not permitted; however, such social forums are being accessed at home and bullying may and does occur on these sites at various times, considering their covert nature. Yes, it is fun to participate in group chats with friends, but these ‘chats’ can sometimes become places where hurtful comments are made, people may be teased, embarrassed and threatened and these incidents may affect friendships, school life and overall mental health.

We advise all our students who have been part of such online conversations or who have felt bullied in an online chat site to do the following:

1) Report this to your parent immediately – they should have full access to all your social media, passwords etc.

2) Screen shot or provide evidence of comments made.

3) Don’t retaliate. Remove yourself from the chat group.

4) Unfriend or block the person who may be acting as a ‘bully’ towards you.

5) Report this to a teacher or Head of School in discussion with a parent or guardian.

Many of our students in Year 7 and 8 are using these forums for the first time, and may not be aware that it is possible to assume the identity of others, thereby pretending to be another person and these manipulations may prove to be damage friendships rather than strengthening them. Our college does not tolerate bullying and we are committed to the well-being of our students.

We had an amazing ti me at the Senior School Camp in Busselton between March 13 and March 16. The staff and students had an acti on-packed week which included high ropes acti viti es, caving, bouncing on trampolines, laser tag and having plenty of ti me to relax and get to know one another over a game of spoons or a swim at the beach. The aim of the camp was for the Year 11 and 12 students to get to know one another and to challenge themselves to move out of their comfort zones. These goals were certainly achieved on camp.

We also used the ti me away from school to encourage the students to think about their relati onship with God. Each evening we had a devoti on and in the morning, we had a quiet ti me where students met in their day groups to discuss issues relevant to them. They then had ti me to refl ect and pray.

The students were a joy to be with and they seemed to really enjoy themselves.

On Monday 26 March, the team from UWA came to Foundati on Christi an College to deliver their ‘Next Step’ program to our Year 12 students. This informati ve and fun session encouraged students to:

Discover their skills, interests and abiliti es.

Explore future careers, training and educati on

Decide on what career and study opti ons are available

Do – Take steps towards their desired career

Review – Review their decisions and the acti ons that they made

This was a really useful program that the students found really interesti ng.

In an eff ort to keep parents informed about the progress of their children in the Senior School, we will be sending home interim reports during the fi rst week of the holidays. These reports will provide parents with the indicati ve grade and mark for each subject as well as a rati ng for work ethic, behaviour, atti tude and organisati on.

In Week Two of Term Two, we will be have our parent nights so that parents can have a chat to teachers about these results.

HEAD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING - Mrs Joanne Doogan

NAPLAN this year will run during Week 3 of Term 2. The Nati onal Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual nati onal assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to parti cipate in tests in reading, writi ng, language conventi ons (spelling, grammar and punctuati on) and numeracy.

NAPLAN is the measure through which governments, educati on authoriti es, schools, teachers and parents can determine whether or not young Australians are meeti ng important educati onal outcomes in literacy and numeracy. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the ti me of the tests. They also provide schools, states and territories with informati on about how educati on programs are working and what areas need to be improved.

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students have already been learning through the school curriculum. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. Help your child prepare for NAPLAN by reassuring them that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and reminding them on the day to simply try their best.

All students are encouraged to parti cipate in NAPLAN tests. Students with disability may qualify for adjustments that refl ect the support normally provided in the classroom. A formal exempti on may be granted for a student with signifi cant intellectual disability and/or signifi cant coexisti ng conditi ons, or for a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background. If you have any questi ons about your child’s preparati on for NAPLAN, you should make a ti me to speak with their teacher or if you believe your child should qualify for adjustments or exempti ons, please contact Mrs Doogan on [email protected]
