The Communion rails project for Mary Immaculate church has been somewhat delayed as the Oratory Community, along with various committees, examine some late but worthy proposals for positioning the Communion rails in relation to the sanctuary area of the church. Everyone will be kept informed about developments through the Newsletter. A reminder to collectors at each of the Masses at Mary Immaculate church that two collectors are asked to go together to place the collections in the sacristy safe during Mass. This is best practice for handling cash and is the policy of the Archdiocese. Finally, we have had several occasions lately at Mass of people walking away with the Sacred Host at Communion time and consuming the Host on the way back to their pew. Needless to say this is a completely inappropriate way of receiving our Eucharistic Lord. The Oratory Fathers recommend receiving Holy Communion the traditional way, kneeling and on the tongue, whenever possible. At the same time, Communion received in the hand, reverently, carefully and prayerfully, as soon as the Host is placed in the hand, also remains a licit and approved way of receiving Holy Communion for Catholics. The priests at Mass this weekend will remind everyone about this important matter. Our Reflection for this week is an extract from The Hour That Makes My Day, another worthy text from Archbishop Fulton Sheen. On the day of his ordination, the Archbishop made a number of resolutions, one of them being that he would spend a continuous hour every day in the presence of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Below he shares something about this experience. Fr Andrew Wise “Here are some reasons why I have kept up this Holy Hour practice, and why I have encouraged it in others: First, the Holy Hour is not a devotion; it is a sharing in the work of redemption. Our Blessed Lord used the words “hour” and “day” in different connotations in the Gospel of John. “Day” belongs to God; the “hour” belongs to evil. Seven times in the Gospel of John, the word “hour” is used, and in each instance it refers to the demonic, and to the moments when Christ is no longer in the Father’s Hands, but in the hands of men. In the Garden, Our Lord contrasted two “hours” - one was the evil hour “this is your hour” - with which Judas could turn out the lights of the world. In contrast, Our Lord asked: “Could you not watch one hour with Me?”. In other words, he asked for an hour of reparation to combat the hour of evil; an hour of victimal union with the Cross to overcome the anti-love of sin. Secondly, the only time Our Lord asked the Apostles for anything was the night he went into his agony. Then he did not ask all of them...perhaps because he knew he could not count on their fidelity. But at least he expected three to be faithful to him: Peter, James and John. As often in the history of the Church since that time, evil was awake, but the disciples were asleep. That is why there came out of His anguished and lonely Heart the sigh: “Could you not watch one hour with me?”. Not for an hour of activity did He plead, but for an hour of companionship. The third reason I keep up the Holy Hour is to grow more and more in His likeness. As Paul puts it: “We are transfigured into His likeness, from splendour to splendour.” We become like that which we gaze upon. Looking into a sunset, the face takes on a golden glow. Looking at the Eucharistic Lord for an hour transforms the heart in a mysterious way as the face of Moses was transformed after his companionship with God on the mountain. Something happens to us similar to that which happened to the disciples at Emmaus. On Easter Sunday afternoon when the Lord met them, he asked why they were so gloomy. To Page 2

From the Parish Priest Dear Parishioners, I have a number of different items to mention to you this weekend.

I am delighted to report that Mary Immaculate Primary School has been successful in applying for a significant grant to improve and landscape the laneway leading into the school and church, off Ferndale Street, and running up into the area between the church and the newly renovated school building. The school will be working in close consultation with the parish with this project and the Parish Pastoral Council will have a chance to examine the first concept drawing at its forthcoming meeting this week.

Fr Andrew Wise “Here are some reasons why I have kept up this Holy Hour practice, and why I have encouraged it in others:

First, the Holy Hour is not a devotion; it is a sharing in the work of redemption. Our Blessed Lord used the words “hour” and “day” in different connotations in the Gospel of John. “Day” belongs to God; the “hour” belongs to evil.

From Page 1: After spending some time in His presence, and hearing again the secret of spirituality - “The Son of Man must suffer to enter into His Glory” - their time with Him ended and their “hearts were on fire.” The Holy Hour. Is it difficult? Sometimes it seemed to be hard; it might mean having to forgo a social engagement, or rise an hour earlier, but on the whole it has never been a burden, only a joy.

Finally, making a Holy Hour every day constituted for me one area of life in which I could preach what I practiced. I could ask others to make the Hour, because I myself had made it.”

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year C

27th/28th August, 2016

SUNDAY MASS READINGS First Reading: Ecclesiasticus 3:17-20.28-29 My son, be gentle in carrying out your business, and you will be better loved than a lavish giver. The greater you are, the more you should behave humbly, and then you will find favour with the Lord; for great though the power of the Lord is, he accepts the homage of the humble. There is no cure for the proud man's malady, since an evil growth has taken root in him. The heart of a sensible man will reflect on parables, an attentive ear is the sage's dream.

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm 67

(Said by all)

The just shall rejoice at the presence of God, they shall exult and dance for joy. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name; rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence.

Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, such is God in his holy place. God gives the lonely a home to live in; he leads prisoners forth into freedom.

You poured down, O God, a generous rain: when your people were starved you gave them new life. It was there that your people found a home, prepared in your goodness, O God, for the poor.

Second Reading: Hebrews 12:18-19.22-24 What you have come to is nothing known to the senses: not a blazing fire, or a gloom turning to total darkness, or a storm; or trumpeting thunder or the great voice speaking which made everyone that heard it beg that no more should be said to them. But what you have come to is Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem where the millions of angels have gathered for the festival, with the whole Church in which everyone is a `first-born son' and a citizen of heaven. You have come to God himself, the supreme Judge, and been placed with spirits of the saints who have been made perfect; and to Jesus, the mediator who brings a new covenant.

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation:

Alleluia, alleluia! Take my yoke upon you; learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart. Alleluia!

Gospel: Luke 14:1.7-14

Now on the Sabbath day he had gone for a meal to the house of one of the leading Pharisees; and they watched him closely. He then told a parable, because he had noticed how they picked the places of honour. He said this, `When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take your seat in the place of honour. A more distinguished person than you may have been invited, and the person who invited you both may come and say, "Give up your place to this man". And then, to your embarrassment, you would have to go and take the lowest place. No; when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there, so that, when your host comes, he may say, "My friend, move up higher". In that way, everyone with you at the table will see you honoured. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the man who humbles himself will be exalted.'

Then he said to his host, `When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not ask your friends, brothers, relations or rich neighbours, for fear they repay your courtesy by inviting you in return. No; when you have a party, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; that they cannot pay you back means that you are fortunate, because repayment will be made to you when the virtuous rise again.’

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
