From the Parish Priest Dear Parishioners, It was gratifying to see how remarkably quickly the book Treasure and Tradition: the Ultimate Guide to the Latin Mass sold out last Sunday after being on sale after the 9:00am Mass. Within a few minutes all copies were gone! Apologies if you were one of the many people who missed out. There will be a display copy at the back of Mary Immaculate Church this weekend, along with an order form that you can fill out. Alternatively you can order a copy though the Parish Office until Wednesday if you wish.
This weekend we especially pray for the thirty-three children of our parish who will be making their First Holy Communion (18 at the 5:30pm Saturday Vigil at SJF; 10 at the 8:30am Sunday Mass at SJF and 5 at the 5:00pm Sunday Mass at MI). May they always realize what a precious and sacred gift they receive in Holy Communion - the gift of Jesus Christ himself as the Bread of Life given to us with grace and love beyond all imagining. We also pray for several children who will be confirmed today in the traditional rite of the sacrament by Bishop Brian Finnigan. May the gifts of the Holy Spirit be ever fruitful in them.
Finally, we bid farewell this weekend to Br Conor Power and Br Matthew Buckley who will be returning this Wednesday to the Toronto Oratory and seminary in Canada to continue their studies for the priesthood. Thank you once again to all those whose financial support of our seminarians allows them to continue their formation to be ordained as priests for the Brisbane Oratory.
Our Reflection this week is taken from the Pastoral Letter from the Bishops of Australia on the issue of Same Sex Marriage. It is vital that we are all informed on what the Church (and therefore Christ) teaches on the sacred meaning and purpose of marriage in God’s plan as our Father and creator.
Fr Andrew Wise Reflection
The Catholic Church opposes all forms of unjust discrimination. We deplore injustices perpetrated upon people because of religion, sex, race, age etc. The Catechism of the Catholic Church calls for understanding for those with deep-seated homosexual tendencies for whom this may well be a real trial. “They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided.” {2358} Christians believe that all people including those with same-sex attraction are called by God to live chastely and that, by God’s grace and the support of friends, they can and should grow in fulfilling God’s plan. Even those who take a different view to us
about the place and meaning of sexual activity can appreciate the particular significance and importance of this institution of marriage. We now face a struggle for the very soul of marriage… To Page 2

ANGELORUM COLLEGE WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN
Angelorum College is pleased to be participating in this year's Woolworths Earn and Learn promotion.
Anyone can support us by shopping at Woolworths, and collecting Earn and Learn stickers. We will be able to
redeem the stickers for much needed educational resources from Modern Teaching Aids. All help is greatly
appreciated as the College is very small and still very new. For more information, please contact Kate Hoey
at [email protected]. A collection box for the stickers has been placed at the back of MI church.
FROM THE ORATORY: The Oratory community is very grateful to those who so generously support us. Our
benefactors assist us to cover the costs associated with the training of our seminarians for the priesthood, with the running of our house and putting food on the table, and supporting the various works of the
Oratory. During August we are inviting our friends and supporters to consider becoming a regular giver to the Oratory, particularly through direct deposit or credit card giving. Your regular gift,
of whatever amount you can afford, greatly helps our planning and budgeting. Are you able to sign up to
make a weekly, fortnightly or monthly gift at this time? There are forms at the back of the churches, especially if you wish to use your credit card. Details can also be found at the donations section at http://brisbane-
oratory.org/. Please contact Father Adrian for further information (0427 109 054 or [email protected]). As a small incentive, those who commence a regular gift (or increase their regular gift) before the end of August will go in the
draw to win a $200 gift card!
From Page 1: Marriage is an institution designed to support people of the opposite sex to be faithful to each other and to the children of their union and it is not discrimination to reserve it to them. Indeed, in this pastoral letter we argue that what is unjust – gravely unjust – is: to legitimise the false assertion that there is nothing distinctive about a man and a woman, a father or a
mother; to ignore the particular values that real marriage serves; to ignore the importance for children of having, as far as possible, a mum and a dad, committed to them and
to each other for the long haul; to destabilize marriage further at a time when it is already under considerable pressure; and to change retrospectively the basis upon which all existing married couples got married.
In 2016, your donations transformed the lives of 20 students through
the gift of a Catholic education, through a MacKillop Fund bursary.
Please support the 2017 Annual Catholic Campaign—your gift will be a
blessing to a child, and bring hope to their family.
The MacKillop Fund bursaries are funded by gifts to the
Annual Catholic Campaign. Your tax-deductible donation this year will
fund even more deserving children.
Believe the incredible,
and you can do the
impossible. It is our
want of faith that holds
us back, even as Peter.
When did he begin to
sink? The Gospel gives us the reason. He took
account of the winds, he began reading some
surveys; it was established statistically that
99.44% of mankind cannot walk on water. All
of the incredulities were in the winds. When
he took his eyes off Christ, Peter began to
sink. Fulton J. Sheen

MASS READINGS
First Reading: Isaiah 22:19-23
Thus says the Lord of hosts to Shebna, the master of the palace: I dismiss you from your office, I remove you from your post, and the same day I call on my servant Eliakim son of Hilkiah. I invest him with your robe, gird him with your sash, entrust him with your authority; and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the House of Judah. I place the key of the House of David on his shoulder; should he open, no one shall close, should he close, no one shall open. I drive him like a peg into a firm place; he will become a throne of glory for his father's house.
The Word of the Lord
Response: Thanks be to God
Responsorial Psalm 137 (Said by all)
I thank you, Lord, with all my heart, you have heard the words of my mouth. Before the angels I will bless you. I will adore before your holy temple.
I thank you for your faithfulness and love which excel all we ever knew of you. On the day I called, you answered; you increased the strength of my soul.
The Lord is high yet he looks on the lowly and the haughty he knows from afar. Your love, O Lord, is eternal, discard not the work of your hands.
Second Reading: Romans 11:33-36
How rich are the depths of God - how deep his wisdom and knowledge - and how impossible to penetrate his motives or understand his methods! Who could ever know the mind of the Lord? Who could ever be his counsellor? Who could ever give him anything or lend him anything? All that exists comes from him; all is by him and for him. To him be glory for ever! Amen.
The Word of the Lord
Response: Thanks be to God
Alleluia, alleluia! You are Peter, the rock on which I will build my Church; the gates of hell will not hold out against it. Alleluia!
Gospel: Matthew 16:13-20
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi he put this question to his disciples, `Who do people say the Son of Man is?' And they said, `Some say he is John the Baptist, some Elijah, others Jeremiah or one of the prophets'.
'But you', he said, `who do you say I am?' Then Simon Peter spoke up, `You are the Christ,' he said, `the Son of the living God'. Jesus replied, `Simon son of Jonah, you are a happy man! Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So now I say to you:
You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church.
And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven.' Then he gave the disciples strict orders not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
Memorial Acclamation: Number Two When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.
