We commence our prayerful preparation time to be open and ready to receive abundant Christmas graces from the Lord for ourselves and our families. There is a penitential component of Advent that we are called to make our own amid all the festivities and busyness of this time of year. A key aspect of this needs to be a resolution by all of us to go to confession before Christmas. There are numerous opportunities to receive the sacrament each week. Let’s not let the opportunity pass us by to be strengthened, healed and forgiven by God through this powerful sacrament of Jesus’ mercy. In this way, along with extra efforts in our prayer life, we will be at our best to celebrate the joy of Christmas with our family and friends this year. Today we have the joy of two children celebrating their first holy communion at the 9:00am Traditional Latin Mass at Mary Immaculate church. It is exactly this Child who enters sinful humanity and returning it to the Father through the cross, a return that was accepted and crowned in Christ’s deliverance and exaltation (Phil 2:5). During Advent, our spiritual life can be revitalised through constant meditation on the Word of God, prayer and praise of God. It is reinforced by constant reception of the Sacraments, those of Penance and the Eucharist in particular. They cleanse and enrich us with the grace of Christ and make us “new”, in accordance with Jesus’ pressing call: “Be converted” (Mt3:2). From the Parish Priest Dear Parishioners,

Today we begin a new liturgical year in the Church with the first Sunday of Advent.

We congratulate Madeleine McLindon and Edward McLindon as they receive our Lord for the first time in the most holy sacrament of the altar.

As mentioned last week, the Oratory fathers have decided to keep the Friday holy hour of mercy and confessions in our parish throughout next year. We will continue this year until Friday 23rd December and then have a new year recess. We will begin again for 2017 on Friday 3rd February. Do please avail yourself when possible of the grace, peace and mercy of this special holy hour.

Our Reflection for this week, appearing below, is about the season of Advent.

Fr Andrew Wise Advent is a time of grace in the Church. We reflect through the Church’s liturgy on the mystery of the coming of Christ. We are called to meditate during this period on the Incarnation of the Son of Man ~ on the moving reality of a Child wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger. It is reinforced by constant reception of the Sacraments, those of Penance and the Eucharist in particular. They cleanse and enrich us with the grace of Christ and make us “new”, in accordance with Jesus’ pressing call: “Be converted” (Mt3:2).

In view of this, every day can and ought to become Advent for Catholics. The more we purify our souls, the more we make room for God’s love in our hearts, and the more Christ will be able to come and be born in us!

First Sunday of Advent - Year A: 26th/27th November, 2016

SUNDAY MASS READINGS First Reading: Isaiah 2:1-5 The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz, concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In the days to come the mountain of the Temple of the Lord shall tower above the mountains and be lifted higher than the hills. All the nations will stream to it, peoples without number will come to it; and they will say: `Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the Temple of the God of Jacob that he may teach us his ways so that we may walk in his paths; since the Law will go out from Zion, and the oracle of the Lord from Jerusalem.' He will wield authority over the nations and adjudicate between many peoples; these will hammer their swords into plough-shares, their spears into sickles. Nation will not lift sword against nation, there will be no more training for war. O House of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord.

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm 121

(Said by all)

I rejoiced when I heard them say: "Let us go to God's house." And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem.

It is there that the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord. For Israel's law it is, there to praise the Lord's name. There were set the thrones of judgment of the house of David.

For the peace of Jerusalem pray: "Peace be to your homes! May peace reign in your walls, in your palaces, peace!"

For love of my brethren and friends I say: "Peace upon you!" For love of the house of the Lord I will ask for your good.

Second Reading: Romans 13:11-14 You know `the time' has come: you must wake up now: our salvation is even nearer than it was when we were converted. The night is almost over, it will be daylight soon - let us give up all the things we prefer to do under cover of the dark; let us arm ourselves and appear in the light. Let us live decently as people do in the daytime: no drunken orgies, no promiscuity or licentiousness, and no wrangling or jealousy. Let your armour be the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation:

Alleluia, alleluia! Lord show us your mercy and love, and grant us your salvation. Alleluia!

Gospel: Matthew 24:37-44 Jesus said to his disciples: `As it was in Noah's day, so will it be when the Son of Man comes. For in those days before the Flood people were eating, drinking, taking wives, taking husbands, right up to the day Noah went into the ark, and they suspected nothing till the flood came and swept all away. It will be like this when the Son of Man comes. Then of two men in the fields one is taken, one left; of two women at the millstone grinding, one is taken, one left. `So stay awake, because you do not know the day when your

master is coming. You may be quite sure of this that if the householder had known at what time of the night the burglar would come, he would have stayed awake and would not have allowed anyone to break through the wall of his house. Therefore, you too must stand ready because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Memorial Acclamation: Number Two

When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.
