CARSHALTON HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS’ VOICE
This half term has seen a huge emphasis on examination success and achievement. Students, particularly in Years
11, 12 and 13 have been under pressure as examinations and modules have been sat in a range of subjects and
results received.
Support and intervention has reached peak levels with many students attending coursework finalisation sessions and
revision classes. Staff have been on hand before school, at lunchtime and after school to guide students through and
this will continue during the Easter holidays with our extensive revision programme that has been put together.
Practical examinations are now also well underway with PE last week and Dance due this week.
We wish all the students the best of luck over the next few weeks and months.
Use of social network sites and mobile phone technology
I wrote in a previous newsletter to parents about the usage of social networks and mobile phones. Last week we
issued a letter to parents and students with advice and guidance and outlining school policy.
As a school we are in favour of students using the latest technology; it can be exciting and aid learning but it must be
used responsibly and in such a way that it does not compromise the safety of students. Please ask to see the letter
that has been issued and read through it with your daughter. I would also ask for your support in regularly checking
your daughter’s phone and social network site to ensure you know who she is communicating with and the way in
which that is done.
The key points in the letter are:
• Students are forbidden to take photographs and video anywhere on the school site. They should also not
upload any photographs onto a social network in their school uniform. The reason for this is that their loca-
tion can then be easily identified and there are cases (although not in this school) where students have
been tracked down and followed using such means.
• Advice is given as to what to do if students receive any communication that is not appropriate.
• Advice is given regarding their privacy settings.
Uniform
I would like to remind parents that as we move into the warmer weather uniform regulations do not change. Warm
weather seems to bring with it an increase in canvas shoes and t-shirts under shirts that become visible. Please
ensure your daughter is wearing the correct uniform.
Please note.....
There is an early finish on Friday 30th March. Dismissal will be staggered, beginning with Years 11, 12 and 13 by
12.00 midday, Years 10 and 11 by 12.30pm and Years 7 and 8 12.45pm.
Students return on Monday 16th April at 11a.m.
It has been a fantastic term with so many very successful events and activities which are highlighted in this newslet-
ter. I would like to wish all students and parents/carers a wonderful
Easter break.

Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge
During the first week in March, 25 lucky Year 10 girls were selected
by their English teachers to participate in the ‘Speak out’ challenge
workshop. Jack Petchey's "Speak Out" Challenge! is a pro-
gramme run by Speakers Trust and funded by the Jack Petchey
Foundation.
Speakers Trust has trained over 100,000 people and is the UK's
No.1 public speaking training provider in the education sector.
The Year 10 girls were given professional training by a member of the
Speakers Trust and had to deliver a 2 minute speech without any
notes. All students received a certificate and 4 girls were picked to go
through and compete in an assembly final: Cheneil, Jessica, Belky
and Emily. All did really well speaking to a (slightly scary!) Sixth Form
audience. The 2 finalists were Belky, who spoke about the value of a
good cup of tea, and Jessica who discussed social media.
On the 14th March, the Jack Petchey Sutton regional final was held at
Carshalton Boys’ Sports College. There were 16 students who deliv-
ered speeches from schools across the borough of Sutton. It was a
very formal event with prestigious judges and the Mayor of Sutton
present. Both Jessica and Belky did brilliantly and received special
certificates from the Mayor and had their pictures taken. Belky in
particular did us proud and came in 3rd place, (the only girl to go
through!) winning a wonderful trophy and itunes vouchers.
We look forward to next year and hope that many Year 10’s will enjoy
participating in this fantastic event.
Careers
Take Your Daughter to Work Day – Thurs 26th April
Year 8 have been given the opportunity to take part in
this National event. Many students have already re-
turned their consent form with placements ranging from
Nurseries to a Canine Hydrotherapy Centre. The dead-
line for forms is 24th April.
Work Experience
Year 12 : 9-13 July. 25% of students have now secured
their placements.
Year 10: 10-21st Sept. 41 students have secured place-
ments already.
Students who haven’t secured a placement should use
this holiday to contact as many as possible.
LSE Summer School
Congratulation to Leah whose application to attend the Maths Summer School at LSE has been successful. The demand for places on the scheme this year was ex-tremely high and unfortunately some students who had submitted good applications had to be disappointed. Kaplan Summer School Kaplan is a learning provider of accountancy tuition in the UK. One of its major areas of expertise is their provi-sion of AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians). Kaplan is hosting free Summer Schools at centres throughout the UK. The programme is aimed at Year 11, 12 and 13 students to help them with their career pro-gression. Key areas covered will include Business case studies, mock interviews, CV workshops and the oppor-tunity to meet with employers/students to gain an under-standing of what is required for accountancy studies. To take part in the Summer school courses, students need to complete an online application form which can be found at www.kaplanapprenticeships.co.uk Mrs Greenland Careers, WRL & Enterprise Manager
Aim Higher Kingston University Some of us taking Health and Social care Level 3 BTEC were lucky
enough to get personally invited to Kingston Hill University, which is
the campus specially created for nursing, economic and law stu-
dents. We got to talk to the lecturers, and get a short tour of the
campus. The main focus on the day was to gain more knowledge
about the nursing courses available, the grading criteria that we
needed to get in to the university. We were also able to use the
practice labs, where the students will practice taking part in real
medical treatments and being placed in real life situations that they
may be faced with actors and actresses pretending to be patients.
We were given the opportunity to ask questions to the current stu-
dents from all different years, doing different types of nursing, such
as learning difficulties care, children’s nursing, adult nursing etc.
They were all very warm and welcoming, and never hesitated to
answer a question, and their positive outlook on the course drives
you to be a part of it.
Towards the end of the day we were taught about the interview
techniques that people must take part in to get a place in the uni-
versity. The spaces are limited compared to the mass volume of
applications they receive each year, so making sure this part of
your interview is its very best is important.
What I have learnt on the trip is that I definitely want to go on to
pursue my dream as a nurse, and I would love to do it at Kingston
Hill University. It has given me detailed knowledge on how to reach
my dreams; such as what I need to put in my personal statement
and how to achieve my place at University. I can say on behalf of
myself and the other students that we are very grateful we were
given the opportunity to be a part of the day, and it has given us all
the motivation to reach what we all set out to achieve.
Senel, 13MS
Congratulations to Johanna
and Sammy in 8WR whose
entry for the Step into The NHS
Competition has been ‘highly
commended’ by the judges.
They looked at the role of a
drama therapist. This is a tremendous achievement as
they had over 550 entries from more than 1,250 students
across the country.
All students in Year 8 had the opportunity to take part in
the competition, which aimed to help them think about the
breadth of career opportunities in the NHS, develop job-
seeking skills and make informed choices about their
important GCSE choices.

Cindy
This years school production was
Cindy, a modern version of
Cinderella. It was about a
teenage girl who had a
dream of singing but obsta-
cles like her evil step-
mother and three horrid
sisters got in her way. In
the end, Cindy got her dream solo
at the gala night/prom.
We all had an amazing time rehearsing and acting and
getting to grips with our characters. Even though we had to
give up all of our lunch times and most days after school, we made the
most of it and had a great time. We had loads of fun creating our cos-
tumes and had lots of laughs at Tracy’s ‘beautiful’ (hint sarcasm) dress and
the dreaded fluorescent pink wig. This years’ cast was amazing. Every-
one was involved, from playing ‘down in the jungle’ to just chatting and
laughing. All the cast got along and we all made great friends. Through all
the moaning and pushes from Mrs Pridham and Mr Craig and the small
obstacles and dramas, it was so successful and it was all worth it.
Geography Trip to Italy Feb
2012
During the February half term 40 GCSE Geography
students got the chance to go to Italy with Miss Hewson,
Miss Robertson, Miss Gardner and Mrs Norris. We had a
great time and got to see loads of amazing sights includ-
ing The Amalfi Coast which had some beautiful views
and extremely scary roads, Soulfatarra Volcano which
smelt terrible because of the sulphur dioxide and Mount
Vesuvius. We also got to make pizzas which was ex-
tremely messy but a lot of fun! All in all it was a brilliant
opportunity and we had a great time so thank you to all
the teachers who made it possible. (More information
and photos available on the website’s Trips News page).

Design & Technology : Product Design News
On Monday 20th February 12 of us went to St Philomena’s High School to
take part in the SATRO Technology Challenge. Lots of different schools
were taking part such as Wallington Grammar School for Boys, Wilsons
and many, many more from all over Surrey. We got in and were given a
table with refreshments and biscuits. We were then given an envelope
with some materials such as A4 paper, corriflute and straws and a set of
rules for the competition. Our challenge was to design and build a model
‘Olympic Tea Bag High Jump’ that had to operate and land on the surface
of a table top. The launcher and the frame had to be free standing and the
starting point for the tea bag could be no more than 15cm above the table.
Sounds easy!
The challenge was to get the tea bag over the high jump pole, the higher
the pole the more points you got. Ours was very high.
At the beginning of the challenge we had 30 minutes to design our jump
and how we would get the tea bag over it using one elastic band. Our
Year 10&11 team got 20/20 points for their design idea. We were stuck
and our minds went blank. As the time went on we began to think outside
the box and more ideas came into our heads of how to build our structure.
Other teams were cheering and we hope that our design would be as good
some of theirs. When the time came to test our design we got the teabag
into the position ready to launch. We let the teabag go........and it broke!
We had a problem – was it going to work
when it was judged? Were we going to
embarrass ourselves by it breaking again?
Everybody was given 3 attempts. The first
time the tea bag didn’t get over the high
jump, the second time the launcher broke.
We knew our last chance was important, we
prepared ourselves and let the teabag go. It
flew straight over and landed in exactly the
right place! The judges took our score and
judged all the other groups.
We didn’t win but we really enjoyed our-
selves and learnt new skills and realised
that we worked well as a team. We really
hope we get other opportunities like this in
the future.

Stan Lee Excelsior Award CHSG has joined a growing number of schools in the country that are contributing to the Stan Lee Excelsior Award. This is a relatively new reading scheme and is unusual in two respects. It is the only reading award for graphic fiction AND the winner is chosen by the students who read the books, not by adult judges. You can see full information on the Award website – www.excelsioraward.co.uk The overall goal of this scheme is to encourage reading
for pleasure amongst children and teenagers. However,
its secondary target is to raise the profile of graphic nov-
els and manga amongst school librarians and teachers.
How are we involved? A number of students have signed up to read at least 4 of the 8 shortlisted titles. Most have not read anything from the graphic genre before and have been pleasantly sur-prised. Others have been REALLY surprised to have enjoyed stereotypical ‘boy books’ such as Green Lantern and a sequel the Fantastic Four. We will submit the students score sheets towards the end of April when their scores will be used to decide the winner. I get the chance to vote for my favourite cover – but keep changing my mind! Dance
An Exciting Half Term for Dance
Jam Free Sutton 8 of our Year 9 students have been working on a project with dancers from Greenshaw, Wal-lington Girls and a choreographer from Rambert Dance Company. The students have participated in eight 2 hour workshops creating a rhythmically complex dance. This was performed as part of the Connect Festival in The Lillian Baylis Theatre at Sadlers Wells on 22nd March. The festival included performances from a variety of different secondary schools as well as professional dance companies. Mrs Jones and Miss Holland who went to see the girls perform were very im-pressed with the high standard of the dance shown by our Y9 students. Secombe Show The Rambert project above also gave the dancers the opportunity to perform at a
local sharing event at the Secombe Theatre on 12th March. The students who
took part in the first Royal Academy of Dance project were also invited to perform
the piece they had created with Pamela Fleming.
Ignite Our new dance event for GCSE and BTEC students set the stage alight with fan-
tastic performances from all who participated. Thank you to all the people who
came to support the students in preparation for their exams or assessments. We
look forward to adding this event to our annual performance calendar.
Royal Ballet in Class An invited group of students had the unique opportunity of watching the Royal
Ballet in Class at the Royal Opera House. This was an excellent insight into the
life of a ballet dancer and the girls commented that it was inspiring to see profes-
sional dancers working on their technique during their morning class.
Royal Academy of Dance Our second project with the Royal Academy of Dance started this term with an-
other group of our Gifted and Talented students. Pamela Fleming is preparing the
students for a Borough sharing event in May where they have a chance to com-
pete for a place to perform at the Southbank later in the Year.
Accumul8 Accumul8 is a Dance company for Year 8 students who are interested in taking GCSE Dance or BTEC Performance as an option. Nicola Harris, Royal Academy of Dance PGCE student, invited a selection of students to work on a piece that was performed at Ignite. More invites will be sent out after Easter. Dance Leaders at Barrow Hedges 3 of our Y12 Dance Leaders have been working
with Y2 students at Barrow Hedges Primary
School to create an Indian influenced dance as
part of an Olympic Dance Project. The girls have
been very inspiring and the teacher at Barrow
Hedges is very impressed with the work they have
been doing.

Olympic Tour
On Monday the 12th of March,
Miss Holland, Mr Brown and
the young games makers were
offered the chance to have a
tour round the Olympic park.
At break we headed off to the
train station and off to Strat-
ford, and luckily this time we all
managed to get on the tube
together without a problem.
When we arrived we were
quickly directed to the coach
and were driving around the
Olympic park, being shown
everything from the Olympic
Stadium and the Velodrome, to
what was soon to be the
world’s largest McDonalds.
The coach ride lasted about an
hour, and afterwards we were
able to go up to the viewing
tube where we could see the
Olympic stadium, and buy
Olympic merchandise if we
wanted to. Although there was
a lot of work to still be done the
Olympic park was amazing to
see and all the young games
makers felt really lucky to get a
tour.

Hampton Court Trip On Wednesday 22nd February, three ‘A’-Level PE students went on a trip to Hamp-ton Court to play Real Tennis or otherwise known as Royal Tennis. As part of our ‘A’-Level course we learn about the development of sports, such as tennis through time and have to apply this a c -quired knowledge to case studies. Being able to go to Hampton Court and experience the game first hand really helped us grasp the complex rules of the game. For example on this particular court there was a picture of Henry VIII and if you managed to hit his picture, you won the point straight away. Whilst on the trip we learnt some of the basic techniques for the shots used in Real Tennis and after a lot of practice we managed to play a few matches. Nicola, Year 13 ‘A’- Level PE student

A JSLA lesson for Miss Baker’s group on Wednesday 14th
March was dedicated to running an activities session for the
entire Rainbow Unit at Green Wrythe Primary School whose
children were transported by mini bus willingly by their ac-
companying teaching staff.
This was a unique outing for the children all of whom have
special needs and it was encouraging to observe the natural
interaction between the older girls and the children as they
participated in their activity.
The JSLA girls led New Age Curling, Bullseye (a target game
with Velcro balls), Skittles and Boccia, a Paralympic sport
which will feature in the 2012 London Games.
Well done to the JSLA girls who took part for their efforts.
Throughout this term they have run activities to give them the
experience of leading a variety of activities for groups of chil-
dren which they can put into practice in the future.
Miss S. Baker (School Games Co-ordinator)
Miss Baker’s group of JSLA students led their first session of activities for a group of children from All Saints Carshalton Primary School on a Wednesday afternoon in February. The children and teachers walked from their school on a very cold day in order to attend and their efforts were rewarded with an active and enjoyable multi skills event. Stickers were provided by some of the JSLA students for their
group, and others were able to give roses stickers to their
children for their effort during the afternoon.
A big thank you to the Leaders for their efforts too and hope-
fully this will be the first of several opportunities to lead events
for other children this school year.
Miss S Baker (School Games Co-ordinator)
Netball & JSLA
On 20th March 11 Year 8 girls went to compete in a Netball Tournament
at Overton. The girls played really well and won convincingly against
the Beacon School. Unfortunately they then lost against Cheam and
Overton, however in both games the girls gave the opposition a run for
their money.
Although they did not get through to the semi-final they have played
really well this season.
The girls finished 3rd in the league for the number of games that they
won, lost and drew.
Thanks to the all the 11 Year 8 girls that regularly attend both practices
and games, it has been a great Netball season for them.
Miss Gardner
On 19th March 2012 Miss Gardner’s Year 10 JSLA (Junior Sports Lead-
ers Award) class welcomed 25 year 5 students from Green Wrythe
Primary School to CHSG. This was the last session that they were
completing as part of the award that were working towards. The CHSG
students had an hour with the primary school pupils and within that time
they each led a separate section of the session. The sections included
a warm up, stretching, team building activities, talking about tactics and
then finally a Benchball tournament. The primary school pupils loved
the session and the junior sports leaders did very well. Well done to
everyone involved.
Miss Gardner

Institute Français Visit
AS Level French is fun and engaging and recently we went to Ciné Lumière at South Kensington to watch a French film called "Tomboy" with Ms Abdou. The film was interesting and the whole French media experience was thrilling. There were English subtitles provided which helped us practice our reading, listening and understanding skills. However, there were some moments when we didn't need to refer to the subtitles! The South Kensington trip was an overall fantastic experience as it was both fun and educational. The area itself was like a "Little France" where there were French bakeries, cafés and even a French school : Le Lycée Charles de Gaulle. It was a trip to remember! House News
This half term we have continued our theme of participation. It
has been full of opportunities once more for CSHG students to
get involved. This is shown through the participation cards which
students have been collecting in anticipation for the termly prize
draw.
Earlier in the term we continued our inter house netball tourna-
ments, this time for Year 7. Many thanks must go to the P.E.
department who organised the competition and a well done to all
the girls who participated in the event.
This term has been largely directed towards a whole school event
for Sports Relief 2012. To prepare for the event, students have
had the opportunity to see where the money raised this year will
go. This has been through watching the official Sports Relief
video appeal. This inspired many students to get involved and
participate in a walk/run/jog/hop or skip for one mile on Friday
23rd March. The turnout was exceptional, with students being
asked to donate £1 to take part. Overall, we have managed to
raise in excess of £350 which will be making its way to various
charities both within and outside the United Kingdom. The girls
also had the opportunity to see various staff members not only
take part but also wear some fancy dress. The girls were pleased
at the fantastic effort from a large number of staff. Many thanks
must go to Mr. Brown for wearing a dress, for Mr. James and Mr.
Godman wearing tutus and Mr. Harrison for his amazing wig. The
female members of staff also did themselves proud with the fairy
wings coming out in force. We would like to thank the hundreds
of students who took part and who gave up their lunchtime for
such a worthy cause.

Young Art work exhibited at the Royal College of Art
In January this year we entered 16 pieces of work into the Young Art competition. This year’s theme was ‘My London’ and students across all key stages were asked to produce a piece of artwork and submit their entry with £1 to the competition. The entries were then shortlisted to be exhibited at the Royal College of Art on the 1-3 May. It is here that Sarish and Kacey will have their work displayed. Kacey’s work will be up for auction and hopefully raise even more money for cancer research! As Sarish’s work is GCSE work, she will have her work exhibited but returned to her for her portfolio. A big thank you and well done to all of the students in-volved.

Winners of the Book Cover Competition
This half term the Art department ran a competition to tie in with National Storytelling week. The students were asked to design a cover for their favourite book. Students from Year 7-9 took part and we had lots of entries. The book covers were created in a range of media from sewing, paintings and computerised collages. The department had a difficult time judging! The overall winners for 1st place were awarded 100 house points, a book and certificate and they were Holly in Year 7, Wiktoria in Year 8 and Mira in Year 9. Following closely in 2nd place were Zoe and Kanisha in Year 7, Amber in Year 8 and Charlotte in Year 9 who were awarded 75 house points and certificates. In 3rd place Kimberley and Eloise won in Year 7, Sabriya in Year 8 and Sharisse in Year 9, they won 50 house points and a certificate. Finally as we had so many entries we awarded Livia and Olivia in Year 7 10 addi-tional house points for 4th place. You can see excellent examples of the work opposite, well done girls!!

Rivers of the World On the 13th of March the Year 8 Rivers of the World students went on a visit to the Thames. We went up to the famous South Bank where we explored the scenic views from the Millennium bridge (or the wobbly bridge as some call it!) to find inspiration for our project. The students took lots of photos and created sketches from their surroundings to bring back to school as ideas for a large piece being made in connection with the British Council on the 26th and 27th of March. Because the tide was out some students were able to get down onto the ‘beach’ of the river and collect pieces of rock and shells and draw into the sand. There were street performers on and around the bridge which also fed to the at-mosphere of being in central London. The new Blackfriars station exit for 2012 allowed us to come out directly on to South Bank next to the Tate Modern straight from Carshalton so it was so easy and convenient to get there and back in just over 2 hours. We all enjoyed our short but inspirational visit and all agreed that we should make it up there more often to see the fantas-tic sights and galleries. We are all looking forward to meeting the Artists in a couple of weeks and creating the work for the big Thames Festival this year.
Regional Spelling Bee
On Tuesday 27 March Miss Abdou
will travel with Bhargavi, Melanie, Halah and Ayusha in Year 7 to
a school in East London to take part in the regional round of the
Routes into Languages Spelling Bee. These girls won the school
competition in French, German and Spanish
earlier in January. The girls have been practising
hard with year 8 Language Mentors, Millie, Ingrid,
Michelle, Brooke and Izzy and with Miss Abdou.
The winners of the Regional Competition will get
to compete in the National Competition held in
Cambridge and will have to learn a total of 200
words. We wish them the best of luck Bonne chance,
Viel Glück and Buena suerte!
MFL Language Champions Project with HSBC
On 1st March, staff from HSBC Canary Wharf came to school as
part of the HSBC MFL Business Language Champion Project, to
deliver language and business focussed workshops to a group of
Year 8 students.
The HSBC staff were Lauren So- mers , Ph i l Ronayne, Amitji Odedra, Sameena Hussain, Kristina Turjanikova (Executive Management Trainees) and Daniel Ericsson (HSBC Technol-ogy Services). Each Member of staff from HSBC had different educational backgrounds,
however they all had some language knowledge, which had helped them acquire opporutnities in the working world. A welcome committee of Year 10 stu-dents (Sophie, Ieva, Kimberly, Sonja, Areebah and Tania) greeted our HSBC guests then workshops followed. It was a very successful and interesting afternoon. Our thanks to all involved. Each workshop consisted of language activities and quizzes, where the students learnt about HSBC, the role it has in the world and opportunities for students who have a range of skills. At lunch, a small group of Year 11 students joined the HSBC staff for a question and answer session.
Seville Trip
Students from Years 8-11 travelled to
Seville during February half term for 5
days with Mrs Lopez, Miss Wall and Miss
MacKinnon. We all had a wonderful
time. See the website for more infor-
mation.
The first day we took part in a Flamenco workshop and l a t e r
we saw our flamenco instructors in a show that was
being filmed by a film crew from the Daily Tele-
graph website.
On Friday we travelled to Granada to
see the beautiful Alhamabra Palace.
On Saturday, we visited the town’s
Plaza de Toro and learnt about the tradi-
tions and customs of bullfighting and afterwards went
on a bus tour of the city. Later, we took a horse and carriage
ride around María Luísa Park and went shopping in the afternoon.
On Sunday we walked to the Alcazar Palace in the centre of
Seville and admired the beautiful architecture. We then went for
churros and chocolate caliente to warm ourselves up. In the after-
noon we visited the Cathedral and climbed the 32 floors of the
Giralda tower, which used to be part of Seville’s great Mosque. In
the evening we caught a bus to a shopping centre with an arcade
and bowling alley and had lots of fun.
The last day we visited a Spanish school, Instituto Velazquez to
meet our penfriends. They made us a special lunch and showed
us some typical sevillana dances. Later students were given a tour
around the school and then Imani, Hannah and Amber led a ques-
tion and answer session with the Spanish students.
All in all, we learnt a lot
about Spanish culture,
got to practise our lan-
guage skills and most
importantly we had lots
of fun!
