SATRO Research
We invite you to host a Four Week Summer Research
Placement for a 6th form student in 2019!
We are looking for businesses and academic institutions to host extended Summer work placements for Surrey 6th Form students studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
Research placements last four weeks and SATRO is proud of our 20-year success record matching up Surrey’s brightest 6th Form STEM students with forward looking organisations to conduct tailored research projects that are of real commercial and/or scientific benefit.
What do you get out of it?
Your company can expect to get national recognition from the British Science Association. 100% of our students achieved their Gold Crest Award last year and we are aiming high again this year!
You will also feature in SATRO’s social media and blog posts which we encourage the students to maintain throughout their project. You will also be invited to the prestigious SATRO Awards held in September.
Both multi-national businesses and consultancies offer placements, including Jacobs Engineering, Vzzual, Surrey Wildlife Trust, Surrey University, Royal Holloway, St Georges, University of London, KBC Engineering, Surrey Satellite Technology and CGL Engineering.
“There is plenty of evidence that organisations who provide placements get a great deal back from the experience, both in terms of understanding young people better and tailoring
recruitment and work practices to suit, and in offering employees a rewarding opportunity to give something back
while developing themselves professionally.” Jon Tickle, TV Presenter, Brainiac – Science Abuse and SATRO
Patron.
“As always, the experience this year with the student was very positive. As well as
hopefully benefitting him, it also gives some of our younger engineers the opportunity
for some mentoring experience.” SATRO Placement Provider.

“I thought the scheme worked very well. I was
lucky that I had two excellent and hard working
students… both were enthusiastic and did an
excellent job.”

“I have no doubt the SATRO Extended Research
Placement programme produces some of the
future’s top scientists and engineers.”
Dr Radu Sporea
Who are the students?
The programme is aimed at addressing critical issues facing these groups:
• lack of diversity in STEM study at higher levels;
• lack of aspiration and progression in students from challenging economic circumstances;
• students with no family history of STEM study.
SATRO is proud to offer students this wonderful opportunity to participate in ‘real-world’ research, and the impact is clear.
“Thanks to everyone at SATRO for this amazing opportunity. I will definitely keep in touch in the future and I hope SATRO will grow even more in order to give more students the same great opportunity I had. The work SATRO is doing within the community for young people is truly inspiring.”
"A huge thank you for funding me for this incredible 4-week placement. Not only has it helped me solidify my decision to pursue science but also, it has allowed me to gain invaluable insight into research. This has definitely pushed me to apply to competitive universities to display my potential. Coming from a disadvantaged background, this opportunity was surely a significant stepping stone to my career in the future. Thank you so much for making such a huge difference in my education and my future."
“SATRO should definitely continue organising these research placements
in the future and perhaps increase the number of places so that more students interested in STEM fields can gain this incredible experience.”

“As a provider you are able to be part of the recruitment process to ensure you get the right
student for your research work. We do not ask for funding—just your expertise and supervision over a
four week period in Summer 2019.” SATRO CEO, Dawn Ray
