Faith in Christ gives us our sense of meaning and purpose.
FROM THE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL
Dear Members of the St Andrews
College Community,
In the last Newsletter for Term 1 I want
to thank the staff, students and parents
for a wonderful start to the year. There
are always challenges when you have
such a large community but I can
honestly say that the willingness to get
involved, have a go and work together is
strong in this community. Over the
Easter break please take time to reflect
on the true meaning of Easter, the death
and resurrection of Jesus and what that
means for us both now and when we
die. Have a safe, happy and Holy Easter
break.

Gospel Reflection:
God of the 'Biggest Loser'!
‘While he was still a long way off, his
father saw him, ran to the boy,
clasped him in his arms and kissed
him tenderly……
Now the elder son was angry then
and refused to go in, and his father
came out to plead with him…..’
~ Luke 15:1-3, 11-32 ~
Jesus’ popularly known parable of the
Prodigal Son, sometimes referred to as
the Parable of the Merciful Father, or
Gullible-Loving Father, or The Lost Son
and Dutiful Son, celebrates lost causes.
There will always be disruptions within
families, friends and communities.
Times of rejection, hurt, resentment,
jealousy and righteous indignation and
cries of ‘It’s just not fair!’, Tortuous
misunderstandings, refusal to dialogue,
indifference and distancing from those
we perceive (or may well have been) at
fault.

Sadly what usually follows is no contact, no talking,
gossiping, judgment, ganging up, scapegoating and
whopping big signs of ‘Not welcome here!’
There is a part of each brother in all of us! It’s our
sense of entitlement that separates us from each
other and from our God. Any way you look at it, this
is an alarming story. It is about hanging out with the
wrong people. It is about throwing parties for losers
and asking winners to foot the bill. It is about giving
up the misconception that we can despise each
other but still love God. We simply cannot, no matter
how wrong any of us has been. The only way to
work out our relationship with God is to work out our
relationships with each other.
Where is the Father located in the parable? He is
outside, watching, waiting, waiting and hoping for a
return. While a son is outside, the father runs to
embrace him and kiss him tenderly. The father also
goes outside to plead with the dutiful son. Can we
too be found outside, seeking each other –
especially when lost in our life stuff ? Luke’s gospel
is not only about welcoming the outsider, but going
and getting them and bringing them into our
friendship groups, families, parishes, workplaces
and communities, our nation! Who is outside waiting
for us to go get them?
Most of us will discover God through God’s mercy
and forgiveness, especially in what we and others
deem as unforgivable. God uses our sin to get close
to us. We are loved sinners. Those who forgive
much, can love much. Practice makes progress!
Jesus, are you a prodigal son? Did you waste your
life on us? Or God, are you the Prodigal Father,
Mother, overflowing with love, who runs to meet us,
embraces, and kisses us? Prodigal Son, Daughter,
Prodigal Father, Mother and Prodigal Holy Spirit, we
are filled with awe and wonder at the love you
squander on us.
Did you Know???
Our Diving Team participated today in the
Combined Catholic Colleges Diving Competition.
Thank you to Mrs Weaver for all of her hard work in
preparing the team. At the time of print we did not
know the results. In our endeavour to provide our
students opportunities that no other school in the
Diocese provide we offer Diving as well as a
number of other co-curricular experiences.
Congratulations to our students from:

Japanese Visit 2019
We will again be hosting a group of Japanese
students from Osaka Gakugei High School from
Tuesday 23 July (Week 1 Term 3) to Tuesday 6
August (Week 3 Term 3). We will be travelling to
Japan in 2020 as well. We require 35 host families.
If any family is interested in being a billet please
forward your names and contact details to the Office
on 9626 4000. If you would like further information
please contact the College.
iSTEM Developments
The iSTEM and STEAM initiatives at our College
will be further enhanced soon with the addition of
upgraded facilities and resources to enable a wider
range of activities and challenges to occur as well
as further enhance the development of our students
who wish to continue into the Senior School with
Engineering Studies. I will post photos and further
information on this initiative in coming weeks.
Student Leadership Return and Earn Initiative
Congratulations to our student leaders who are
promoting and coordinating the Return and Earn
Recycling initiative at the College. All proceeds will
go towards our nominated charities as well as raise
awareness of our need to recycle to protect our
environment. Great leadership.
Primary School Visits
At present I have visited 9 Catholic Primary Feeder
Schools to introduce myself as well as share with
the staff and students the successes we are
celebrating through the academic, spiritual and
physical dimensions of the College. I have been
accompanied by students who attended the Primary
School and they have been wonderful advocates for
our great College. I have one to go.
Our focus at St Andrews College is to develop
each student using the SPIRE Framework

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL STUDENTS
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate
all the staff and students on a wonderful term. There
has been some great work done in the classroom
and with all the extra curricular activities in the
College.
There have been a number of major events during
the term such as the Opening Mass, the Swimming
Carnival, Public Speaking, Jazz afternoons just to
name a few.
The success of the College can only happen with
the extra work of the staff and the participation of
the students. Congratulations to all those who are
―doing more and going beyond‖.
First day back in Term 2
Students return on Tuesday the 30th of April in their
full Winter Uniform.
Term 2 Uniform
All students are expected to be dressed with
blazers, ties for boys and stockings and Kilt or pants
for girls. The Winter Uniform is to be worn to and
from the College and at all times be worn with pride.
As it gets colder, students start wearing extra layers
of clothing. No non-St Andrews College clothing
should be worn with the uniform unless it is hidden
under the College uniform. I suggest that if students
are cold they wear thermal undergarments that are
hidden under the uniform. Gloves and scarves can
be worn but they must be Navy or Black.

Attendance
As the weather gets colder, sometimes students try
to convince their parents that it is too cold to attend
school. Please remember that we have air-
conditioned classrooms and school will run as usual
regardless of the weather. The cold or heat are not
reasonable reasons for not attending school or for
being late to school.
Thank you to all the students and families who have
made an effort to have minimal absences during the
term. We understand that family emergencies and
sickness do happen and when this does happen the
College will assist to ensure that your child does not
miss out.
When there is absence above the recommended
days, the College will make contact with the families
to develop an attendance plan to ensure that your
child is making the most of their learning. Contact
with your child’s Learning Advisor and their Leader
of Learning-Pastoral will ensure that your child’s
needs are being met.
Please don’t hesitate to contact the College if there
are any issues with attendance.
Listening to music while studying
I was reading an article recently about listening to
music while studying. I have listed the major findings
from the research.
What are the main findings?
1. Students who revised in quiet environments
performed more than 60% better in an exam
than their peers who revised while listening to
music that had lyrics.
2. Students who revised while listening to music
without lyrics did better than those who had
revised to music with lyrics.
3. It made no difference if students revised listening
to songs they liked or disliked. Both led to a
reduction in their test performance.
4. Students who revised in silence rated their
environment as less distracting and accurately
predicted that this would lead to better
performances in subsequent tests.
All evidence leads to the conclusion that listening to
music while studying will distract from performance.
This study was conducted with music in mind but
having the television on and other loud noises is not
the best environment for study. Choose a space that
is quiet and has no distractions. Turn off phones and
other distractions and set about to study.
If you would like more information about this study
please come and see me.
What’s in the planner this week?
One of the focuses this week is on Active
Constructive Responding (ACR). This is about
listening enthusiastically, making eye contact, using
positive gestures to make them feel valued. We
must be mindful about being dismissive, showing no
enthusiasm or being non responsive to others.
Positive engaged listening to others helps us build
relationships.
The key word for the week is Adapting. How can
we adapt our ideas, behaviour and our plans to be
more positive and have a growth mindset?

Misadventure and Non Completion
of Task Reminders
There have been a number of students who are not
handing in assessment tasks on time, or are away
on the day before or of the assessment. It is
imperative that students follow the correct
procedures for assessment tasks.
Years 9 - 12
Away on the day of an assessment
Parent/Guardian rings the office to explain
why the student is away for the assessment
task.
Students must obtain a doctors certificate or
the parent/guardian writes a letter explaining
the emergency circumstances.
The student must go to the office on the day of
return to fill out a misadventure for sickness or
an extreme family circumstance before
Learning Group. The doctors certificate and
explanation must be attached to the
misadventure form.
The assessment must also be attached to the
misadventure form if the task is a hand in task
If the task is a test or examination, the student
must complete the misadventure form and
attach the documentation, however the
student must see the KLA Leader of Learning
before recess on the day of return to organise
either or an doing the test/examination oral
alternate task or receive an estimation for the
task.
Students failing to follow the procedures will
receive an N Award Warning Letter and the
task may result in a zero grade
Away the day before an assessment
Students must obtain a doctors certificate or
have a letter explaining the significant
circumstances preventing the student from
coming to school.
Students need to go to the office before
Learning Group to hand in the documentation
and fill in a misadventure form.
Students who know they will be away for the
assessment task
Students must see the KLA Leader of
Learning and their teacher before they miss
the task.
The Leader of Learning and teacher will
negotiate how the student will complete the
test.
It is not satisfactory for a student to know they
will be absent such as for a holiday, or other
event, and not alert the Leader of Learning
and subject teacher.
NAPLAN Practice Tests
The NAPLAN practice tests progressed very well.
However there were students without devices and
headphones. Each student needs to have a device
and headphones as we progress towards the actual
NAPLAN tests. Students without their own device
will have a spare device, however they will not be as
familiar with using the device as they would with
their own device. Also students without earphones
will not be permitted to play any sound during the
actual exam and therefore will be forced to guess
the results.

It was nice to see so many staff, students and
parents at the Year 11 Jazz evening.
Our Year 11 music students looked sharp and
sounded great. They all presented as if they were
young professional Jazz artists. For most, it was
the first time performing live on stage.
The St John Paul II Centre was full and alive with a
captive audience as our music performers took
them on a journey down memory lane.
This was a live, real world assessment task that
was marked in a professional setting. The students
were very excited and are now looking forward to
their next showcase of creativity. Our young
performers glowed in a dynamic environment that
left a receptive audience wanting more.
Mr Chiappetta prides himself on exposing our
creative students to regular performance
opportunities so that the St Andrews College
community can acknowledge the impact it has on
their overall educational development.
A very successful evening with massive outcomes
achieved by all students involved.
Thank you to all the staff and students who
assisted with the evening.

Twelve students represented St Andrews College at
the PDSSSC Swimming Carnival on Friday the 29th
of March. They were Andrew Easton, Jayan Easton,
Georgia Green, Stephanie Out, Ashleigh Out, Daniel
Taylor, Gene Tibig, Marcus Domingo, Xander
Domingo, Issabella Narayan, Roy Hale and Jade
Kember.
Even though we only fielded a small team most
competitors were competing in several events. The
Out sisters, Jayan and Issabella all competed in a
huge nine event program and all improving on their
personal best times in several events. All other
swimmers were in four or more events.
It was a great start from one of our youngest
swimmers Xander Domingo winning his first event
and progressing through to the NSWCCC, he
backed this up with first in the 50m Breastroke,
100m Freestyle and the 50m Backstroke. Issabella
Narayan also progressed in the 50m Butterfly and
the 100m Freestyle. Not to be out done by the Year
7 swimmers Georgia Green progressed in the 50m
Butterfly and Backstroke. The NSWCCC will take
place on the 5th of April.
St Andrews College fielded a Senior Boys Relay
Team for the first time in several years and the boys
performed well securing third place and taking home
a ribbon.
The other students found the competition a step up
with most other competitors training every day. Our
students gave it their best and fought hard in every
race with several swimmers winning their heat.
I would like to thank Miss Mamuk and Mr Aronis for their assistance on the day. A big thank you also goes to the parents who gave up their time to support their son or daughter. We had a great family atmosphere in the stands with everyone cheering each other on. Well done.

Elana Lekov of Year 7 has been developing her
football skills since she joined Tiny Tots as a four
year old.
From the age of five until nine Elana played for
Blacktown Spurs where she continued developing
her ball skills and soon mastered the skill of
passing the ball with both feet. Elana believes this
is a skill essential for the success of any football
player.
For the past four years Elana has played
representative soccer with Blacktown Spartans
and Mt Druitt Rangers. At the age of nine Elana
began to play Futsal and in 2018 she made the
Inner West Magic Team. Her coach asked her to
trial for the Futsal NSW Team where she was
successful.
At the end of the season Elana and her family
received information that she was selected to
represent Australia in the Australian 13 Years
National Futsal Team to play in Barcelona.
When asked what she likes most about football
and Futsal Elana says the fast pace and
excitement of the game. She also credits some of
her strong friendships to football.
This is Elana’s first opportunity to represent
Australia and she is very excited to be playing at
an international level. Her training regime will soon
increase from two nights a week to three nights a
week as she prepares for the Barcelona Tour in
late October and November.
2019 has become very busy for Elana as she
juggles her training and Year 7 workload. Elana is
very much looking forward to what the future may
hold for her.
Congratulations on your great achievement Elana!
