SECONDARY SPORTE n g a g i n g a n d e n e r g e t i c !I know that every student and her family have their own story, and that life presents them with some wonderful celebrations, like this evening’s concert, along with some pressures and challenges. I wanted to share the story of one student and her family, because they have made a profound impact on me. She and her family are happy for me to share this with you.Natasya came to SAC in Year 8 in 2012. She was an avid learner and grabbed every opportunity with both hands, be it Music, Sport – anything that came her way. Early in Year 9, Natasya had a brain haemorrhage and was placed in an induced coma for several weeks. Sitting by her side in the hospital, Natasya’s father was very afraid but he said he always felt God’s reassuring presence by his side, telling him that she would be OK.When she awoke, it was like beginning again; Natasya had to learn to walk and talk and this massive rehabilitation process took years. Before and after school, Natasya would work with the various therapists to relearn skills. I will never forget her first day back in her Year 9 class, the joy of her peers at seeing her again and the warmth of their welcome. Tash brings out the best in everyone she meets. If you look through the photos of any of our whole school events in the last few years – swimming carnivals, sports days, Mercy Days, Walkathons - Natasya will be there in every one, leading from the front. At our Year 12 Assembly a few weeks ago, we presented Natasya with the Catherine McAuley Award, because for us she embodies everything good about SAC: her faith, her sense of fun, her kindness, hard work, perseverance and eternal optimism - these are qualities we treasure in all our graduates.I have learnt so much from Natasya and her family. Their faith and hope are utterly inspiring, their love for one another does not waver. They have overcome challenges they would never have imagined. I know that every family has its own challenging moments and inspirational stories. It isn’t possible to live a full and flourishing life without meeting those challenges and finding a way through them. So I say thank you Natasya and all of you for being a part of this community and being beacons of hope for one another. One of the most important American poets of the last 200 years, Emily Dickinson, said that hope inspires the good to reveal itself. On nights like tonight, there is goodness all around us, and it’s important to recognise and celebrate it. But even in our darker moments, when things seem difficult or confusing, hope is always present. Our SAC community has come to see the Mercy of God through Natasya and her family’s faith, hope, and love. That’s the very heart of what we’re about at SAC. And as the celebration of Christmas appears on the horizon again, in that feast we celebrate the primary reason for our faith, hope, and love - God’s loving move toward us in the birth of Jesus.Make it a great Christmas. Celebrate the love and hope that binds your families together and opens them to the good. Nataysa’s family will.Happy Christmas,

Ms Paddy McEvoyPRINCIPAL

SECONDARY SPORTVOICE - UN Youth

Congratulations to Sarah who met with success in Voice – UN Youth. Voice is a dynamic public speaking competition that enables young people to pitch their own solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues, as well as develop skills in communication, confidence and persuasive speaking. Sarah presented a well-crafted and convincing speech suggesting ways in which Australians living in rural and remote areas could have to access better health care.Sarah will now participate in the National Finals in Hobart next April.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program allows young people who are looking for new opportunities, challenges, experiences and skills to reach their goals and develop outside their comfort zone through teamwork and leadership. The scheme is a self-development program which is recognised internationally and involves a variety of voluntary and challenging activities. The activities chosen depend on the interests of the individual. The aims of the award are for participants to:• develop a sense of community service and responsibility to

others• encourage the development of personal interests and

practical skills• encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery• encourage participation in physical recreation and

improvement of performance.Below is a brief account of the recent Sliver Expedition which involved thirteen students and three staff.

Mr Alan BrownDUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD COORDINATOR

As soon as I got on the bus to start my Silver Dukes adventure, I knew it would be great. I was getting along really well with everyone and we were laughing and having fun. Once we arrived at Kingston-on-Murray and set up our tents, we went for a short kayak trip just to get used to it which was a breeze. It was a relaxing night having burgers for dinner and sitting around a campfire playing games and eating lollies. The next day, we got onto the river really early and slowly made our way downstream. Going through Lock 3 was really interesting but a little gross too with dead fish also floating in the lock. We reached our lunch stop early and stayed a while. I relaxed before eating my lunch and then played games with a Frisbee and swam in the river. I even tried to stand up in my kayak and pretended to be a Gondolier in Venice. This was quite a challenge, but I made it! Traveling to our campsite was hard, work going against the strong current, but it was a good challenge and I felt a real sense of achievement when we arrived at our remote campsite for the night. Before making our own dinners on a burner, we chilled out and went for a cooling swim. We had another fire that night while telling stories and bad jokes that were funny. The next morning, we set off very early to head back to Kingston-on-Murray and somehow I got chosen to read the map and navigate us through the back-waters. We made it through but not before we had a water fight in which we all got thoroughly soaked! I didn’t want this camp to end. I made heaps of memories, became closer with friends and teachers and just overall had a really amazing time. Thank you Mr Brown, for all your hard work and for encouraging us to be adventurous, take up challenges, to push ourselves to set new goals outside our comfort zone and for keeping us safe at all times. I had heaps of fun and felt a real sense of achievement!Kate Roocke 9RK

SECONDARY SPORTA HANDFUL OF POPPIESOn Friday 11 November, students from 10SB were privileged enough to attend a beautiful Remembrance Day ceremony at West Terrace cemetery. Upon arrival, organisers allocated us all a handful of poppies to place in front of each war veteran’s grave, a sentimental beginning to a heartfelt ceremony. As we took to our seats we felt an overwhelming warmth from each guest. The ceremony began with an Aboriginal Affairs Ambassador speaking in a native Indigenous language known as the Kuarna language. As the morning progressed, a highlight included a speech by a ‘Black Hawk’ operator named Genevieve Reuger. She was an excellent speaker and gave us a whole new perspective on Remembrance Day, explaining that Remembrance Day isn’t just about remembering those who perished but rather, remembering all those who were affected by war. She also drew upon her own experiences, remembering her grandfather who survived the war and fought for his beloved country. Reguer explained that he was a man changed forever. Being part of moments like these changed our lives as students. We were able to empathise with the stories told and make connections with the knowledge learned in class. Remembrance Day is a significant day in our year and we were honoured to be a part of it.Chiara Cimmino, Jasmine Goh and Tahlia Gallasch 10SB

My invention helps with recycling. It can recycle both food scraps and paper by placing items in the correct shoot at the top. The materials then fall inside Frankencycle and then land in different containers. Mia

FRANKENCYCLE INVENTION

I was inspired by my Dad who loves to drink coffee, but not when it is too hot. I combined two products for my invention, heat detecting colour changing stickers and a normal coffee cup. Portia

The long stick is for reaching the fruit high up into the tall trees. The famer will cut the stem of the fruit, then it will fall down onto the cutting notch. Without the cutting notch, the fruit will fall down and be squished. Hiruni

FRESH FRUIT PICKER

My invention was a sunscreen dispenser with the brand name, Sammy’s Sunscreen. They could be placed in public places so that if people leave their sunscreen at home they can always have access to it. I wanted to promote the slip, slop, slap message. Samara

SUNSCREEN INVENTION

This invention is for children and adults who don’t want a messy desk. Simply find a table, put rubbish on it, attach the Mini Bin TM and scrape the rubbish. Harmony

MINI BIN TM INVENTION

Creativity is the secret sauce added to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). It is also the course of innovative thinking. Students applied a range of higher order thinking processes and skills in order to create a new invention. It wasn't easy, it involved brainstorming, researching, designing, making decisions, making, testing and evaluating.

My invention was inspired by the amount lost property at school. The Barclothenater can replace the lost and found system. Each student would have their own personalised bar codes which they would stick on all of their items. Then if an item is lost, it is placed inside the Barclothenater which has sensors. The sensors scan the bar code and identify the student who owns the lost item. Elspeth

BARCLOTHENATER INVENTION

The purpose of my invention is for dogs to enjoy the outdoors all year round. It has solar panels which are made from silicon cells to power a fan under the roof and an electric blanket inside the dogs’ bed. I also included a fly-screen material for the door to keep the flies and heat out of the kennel. Rachael

DOOGY DO BED INVENTION

I created this invention because some children and adults are afraid of the dark. My invention, the Light Up Pillow, is made from a lot of electrical products. Some of the main electrical products that I used were wires, a soldering iron, electrical cables and much more. I used LED strip lights for my pillow to light up. These lights are very good because they don’t catch on fire and they have a sticky surface underneath, so you can stick them to objects. I really like my invention and I enjoyed making it with some help from my Nonno. Cartia

LIGHT UP NIGHT PILLOW INVENTION

This is a small replica of my Helping Music Stand. It helps to hold small things, holds the book open and it’s foldable. I was inspired to make it because when my violin teacher brought her music stand to my house, she had to keep going to get a pencil and my book kept flipping pages. Kira

HELPING MUSIC STAND INVENTION

My Invention is a guitar that has different attachments on the guitar so that you don’t lose music notes or pics. It also has a record, stop and play button so you can listen to what you have played. My invention worked and I had a lot of fun making it. Imogen

SEMESTER 2 SOIREEThe St Aloysius Music Department were delighted to host the Semester 2 Soiree Evening on Tuesday 8 November, 2016. The evening, which was entirely student focussed, featured instrumental and singing performances from a selection of our private music tuition students from Reception right up to the senior years. It was wonderful to see such a varied line-up of musicians participate in this event, from our junior primary violinists to our Come ‘n’ Try brass students - music tastes of all descriptions were catered for.Performance opportunities such as this provide a wealth of benefits for our aspiring SAC musicians. In addition to giving students the invaluable chance to perform, it also enables parents to see their daughters perform and the chance to meet with their tutors.I want to thank Ms Alisha Min, Music Assistant and the tutors and students who contributed to the running of this performance evening. Please stay tuned for our Semester 1 Soiree Evening in 2017.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION WEEK SUCCESS!

All year levels from Reception to Year 9 took part in PE week activities in Week 5. Students in Reception to Year 2 enjoyed taking part in gymnastic triskills activities with qualified instructors. Our Year 3 students loved learning new games in cricket clinics, Year 4s had their hips shaking with new Zumba moves, Year 5 learnt new skills in taekwondo and also about a different type of fitness. Our Year 6’s were sweating it out in their aerobics classes and Year 7’s took to the netball court at Priceline Stadium to compete against other schools. Meanwhile our Year 8 students participated in the annual Jetty to Jetty run/walk won this year by Ruby Briffa and Zoe Sotiropoulos 8NW. Lastly our Year 9 students travelled to Bounce and had a fantastic day bouncing every which way! It is always a fun week and a big thank you must go to all the teachers who helped out. I am glad that the students were active and tried some new exercise within PE week! We hope this encourages students to be active at home too.

SECONDARY SPORTMULTICULTURAL BUTTERFLYNow more than ever, we are called to embody and demonstrate mercy values as individuals and as a school community. Catherine McAuley was a woman who took vulnerable people under her wing and advocated for their rights. We discussed this in JAM during Week 4 and decided we’d like to show how we take migrants and refugees ‘under our wings’ at SAC. In Week 5, we stuck up butterfly cut-outs around the school, some of which had facts about asylum seekers printed inside the wings. Then, on Friday 18 November, we invited everyone in the school community to stand on a chalk-drawn outline of a butterfly in the Dunlevie courtyard, holding up one of the world’s many national flags. Some students wrote their own messages of ‘welcome’ inside a butterfly, too. This was a symbolic gesture to unite people from many cultural backgrounds and express a shared message of inclusion and hope. It was lovely to see people make new friends and bond over their shared cultural heritage. We only printed out one national flag for each country, so several students who wanted to hold a particular flag up decided to share with someone else who wanted to hold up the same one. This sparked interesting conversations and allowed us to reflect on the beauty of our multicultural school community. Thank you to everyone who got involved.

Christmas is almost upon us! It’s amazing how quickly time flies. For some people, however, the weeks leading up to Christmas are long and difficult. Many people in Adelaide experience significant financial hardship, are separated from loved ones, or enduring personal crises. Adelaide Day Centre and Catherine House provide support for families who meet challenging times during the Christmas period. We have our Christmas tree set up in the SAC foyer and it would be great if we could collect some gifts underneath it to pass on to these generous organisations. The items we would like to collect include:

-Toiletries-Toys-Food vouchers-Movie tickets-Cosmetics-Stationery -Non-perishable food itemsItems can be placed under the Christmas tree until the last day of term. We thank you in advance.

2016 AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION RESULTS

(YEAR 8-12)

Results are now available for the 38th annual Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). Hundreds of secondary students from around 30 countries sat the AMC on Thursday 28 July 2016. Students compete on the same day making it possibly one of the largest single events on the Australian education calendar. An Australian initiative, the AMC was introduced in 1978 as the first competition of its kind in schools here. It is now a truly international competition, having become the major school mathematics enrichment event and benchmark for mathematical ability throughout the Pacific and South-East Asia. It tests everything from basic numeracy skills through to advanced problem solving.

St Aloysius College entered 21 students. Six students achieved a Credit and eight received a Proficiency Certificate. All other students who competed received a Certificate of Participation and every entrant is provided with an individual performance report.

A special congratulation to the following students:

• Kexin who received a Certificate of Distinction. This places Kexin in the top 25% of Year 11 and 12 students in South Australia.

• Chris and Breanna both received a Certificate of Distinction. This places Chris and Breanna in the top 20% of Year 8 and 9 students across the state.

Well done to all the girls who entered and I look forward to many students participating in 2017.

SECONDARY SPORTCONGRATULATIONS!

This year 56 students from Years 4-7 participated in ICAS: Mathematics on Tuesday 16 August 2016.

ICAS are independent evaluations of students’ skills and knowledge in core learning areas and provide insight into students’ understanding. The skills and understanding tested are important indicators of success in school and beyond.

Students whose achievements were outstanding were awarded with Certificates of Merit (seven students), Credit (sixteen students) and Distinction (one student). 32 students received a Participation Certificate and each student received an individual report of their performance.

A special congratulation to Alisha who was awarded with an ICAS Principal’s Award at the most recent primary assembly.

Well done to all students for achieving their personal best and I look forward to a large number of participants again in 2017. Further information regarding ICAS is available on the Educational Assessment Australia website (www.eaa.unsw.edu.au).
