ATTENTION ASPE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS!Your peers have been busy organizing the ASPE Young Professionals (AYP) special-in-terest group, and we want you to get involved. Send an email to [email protected] if you want to be kept up-to-date on exciting special offerings just for young engineers, including: • Educational offerings for young

Hello from your VP Tech!
First, I want to again thank all our main presenters from last year, along with Messrs. Mike Melaragni and Paul Baker who put on another successful early design class series. We hope to continue to provide all our members with valuable information in this year’s program.
This year the Chapter will again be providing an early plumbing design class to kick off the evening. This design class series will run from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM on the same evenings as the technical meetings, the same as last year. The technical meeting is scheduled to run from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Buffet dinner and table top vendor product presentations and displays will be provided between the two meetings from 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM, similar to before. Plan to arrive a few minutes early or stay a few minutes later if you want some additional time with the vendors to learn about their latest innovations and products.
This year each early class will be on a topic related to storm water drainage systems – since we all know this is a hot topic in the plumbing engineering world right now.
September 12th, 2017 at NSF International in Ann Arbor, and will focus on storm system design in the new 2015 edition of the IPC and MPC. We will start the evening with a design class taught by Bill Grayzar on the new way to size storm systems based on the new code. Then after dinner we will take groups of attendees on a tour of

This is our chance to see how the drains performance does depend on hydraulic head – and hence why the code method of sixing needed to take this into effect. Check out the test rig here:https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6283283432168529920.
ASPE EMC will again be utilizing the Eventbrite electronic registration for meetings this year. As a reminder, the programing we offer is free to ASPE members; the cost to non-members and guests will be $20.00 to cover the dinner. This fee must be paid in advance. If you have any trouble using Eventbrite or have additional RSVP questions, let me know.
Remember you can also receive CEU’s by attending the ASPE EMC monthly meetings. So, if you know someone looking for CEU’s give them a copy of the 2017-2018 ASPE EMC Program or bring them to a meeting as a guest. Speaking of CEUs, don’t forget that you can earn some easy, free CEUs by participating in ASPE National’s Read, Learn, Earn program: https://aspe.org/read-learn-earn-articles. Just click on the link, read one of the listed articles and take the quiz! As of the writing of this article there were 13 articles available for credit, each one worth 0.1 CEUs!

July 18th, the “Super Flush” test was performed on the plumbing systems, and I am happy to report that all systems passed.
The Super Flush is a required test on most stadiums, arenas, and buildings of the like. I have heard it described as “the most useless plumbing test in existence,” and I
have heard of destructive consequences associated with this test. So, what is a Super Flush?
Up until July, the process described to me was, basically, as follows. The companies associated with the project compile a

This type of test is doomed to fail for a few reasons. First, the domestic water and sanitary system design will not handle the

However, the test at the LCA was different. The procedure was well thought out, and intelligent. The plan involved having a

Needless to say, the systems passed all tests, and the event was considered a success. So I send out a “Great job, team!” to all of those involved in the design and construc-tion of the LCA plumbing systems, and all of the other sys-tems for that matter. It has been one “H” “E” “Double hockey sticks” of a road for the last twenty-two months. Job well done.
With the end of summer coming to a close and the school projects wrapping up, it’s time to get the kids back to school and to begin another year of ASPE meetings and events. I am happy to serve another year as the V.P. Legislative for the Eastern

Dann Holmes, ASPE Region 2
I’m guessing everyone taking the time to read this survived the Eclipse of 2017! Whew, some of you in Region 2 were very close to the “totality” zone. Congratulations.
It seems like I just wrote an article that said summer was starting. Now, we’re closing in on the end. Where did the time go? I love the upcoming autumn
colors but I’m not too fond of the winter months that follow.
The third week of August is always a special time in Ann Arbor, MI, especially at Washtenaw Community College.
Welders, and Service Techs.
Nearly 2,000 UA instructors and professionals from the US, Canada, Australia, and Ireland attend the Instructor Training Program.
I have worked closely with UA Instructors from Local 1 out of NYC over the past few years. They have three plumbing related courses they teach at WCC. Part of their class agenda each year includes a morning and afternoon visit and tour of our NSF laboratories. They love it when our lab technicians conduct plastic pipe burst and impact tests. The groups have grown so large that we now charter a bus. A total of 73 made it this year.

Some great things to look forward to in October is the ASPE Technical Symposium in Montreal, QC. Technical Sessions include Fundamentals, Fire & Life Safety, Materials & Equipment, The Business of Plumbing Engineering, and Designing Across Boarders.
I hope you are planning to go. I know I am. I’ve sent away for my renewal passport. I should have it back by the time most of you browse your chapter newsletter.
For those of you looking for copies of the 2018 IPC, IMC, and IFGC books, I have them for sale. The small amount of money made on the sales help offset the travel, hotel and food costs by those attending the code hearings.
Sadly, I must inform you of the untimely passing of a young, talented, and gifted young lady who devoted her professional career to advancing Public Health, particularly focusing on water issues. On August 23rd, the plumbing world lost my Building Water Health colleague and friend, Allison Yee. At only 27 years of age, the work she accomplished in such a short time will be remembers and utilized by the entire plumbing engineering world for decades to follow. God grant her eternal peace and happiness.
