IN THE KNOW

so valuable. One of the great values we have in our Chapter is the inclusion of contractors as part of our membership – that is not the case in many other Chapters. Anyway, back to some of the items we learned from Paul last month:

• We all know to reference NFPA 13 when designing our systems, but don’t forget to check with other governing authorities, like the insurance carrier. FM insured facilities follow FM data sheets which can have increased protection requirements compared to NFPA.

• Considerations should always be made to the head selection (type, temperature, etc.) and spacing given the requirements of the area to be protected.

• When designing or checking spacing, obstructions can be a tricky problem – be sure to really review NFPA for their obstruction rules.

• The remote area for hydraulic calculations is not always the physically most remote, a “closer” area might be the hydraulically most remote – which is why multiple calculations should be performed to ensure the correct remote area is being used. Remote areas also do not need to be rectangular.

• Head k-factor is important to pay attention to. It should be selected based on the hazard you are protecting. If you undersize it, you will drive the pressure way up.

• ESFR sprinklers are special, with their own design and obstruction requirements. The piping for these systems is larger than other systems.

• If you have storage in your building, be sure to really talk with the user about the details of this

protection requirements.

•adding heads – then the current hydraulic are typically acceptable. If you are adding heads, a new hydraulic calculation should be performed.

Hello from your VP Tech!

I hope you all had a great holiday and New Years!

First of all, let’s extend a big THANK YOU to our tabletop and event sponsors last month:

December Meeting: The Macomb Group, VE Sales, Shambaugh & Son LP, Kerr Pump

For those that weren’t able to join us, you missed out on a great night of education on the

topic of Fire Protection. Our Design session, taught by Mike Melaragni and Paul Baker, cover cross-connection control for the Fire Protection and how the Michigan Plumbing Code comes into play. Some highlights from Mike’s presentation included:

• In Michigan we need a separate water service for Fire Protection. Why is this? It helps the municipality be able to turn-off the domestic water without putting the people and the building at risk.

• Michigan considers Fire Protection a low hazard when it comes to cross-connection control.

•protection: Reduced Pressure Detector Assembly (RPDA) and Double Check Detector Assembly (DCDA).

• DCDA is the most commonly used, but if you have chemicals in your systems (like glycol) you should use the RPDA.

• Both of these assemblies have a bypass included, and that bypass has the same level of protection as the main back-

• Both assemblies have meters on the bypass, this is to provide an audible or visual indicator of leakage in the sprinkler system.

• Remember, if you have the RPDA – you need to be sure the

drainage from the assembly.

The technical session for the evening was a new speaker, Paul Flanagan from Shambaugh & Son LP. Paul had a full session of great material and I hope we can convince him to come back next year to impart more of his detailed knowledge on us. As designers we can get caught up in our own world of codes and design practices – which is why practical understanding from the installer’s point of view can be
