MAY TECHNICAL PROGRAMTOPIC: Large Area Venting (Kitchen, Mechanical Rooms, etc.)
Presenter: Julius Ballanco P.E., CPD, FASPE JB Engineering and Code Consulting, P.C.
Julius is President of JB Engineering and
in code and standard consulting in the areas of plumbing, mechanical, life safety and
currently the President of the ASPE Research Foundation. He is Past President of the ASPE and was previously head of
and Code Administrators (BOCA®) International, Inc. He is a monthly columnist in both Plumbing & Mechanical and PM Engineer magazines. He has authored Illustrated Plumbing Codes Design Handbook, Ballanco on Plumbing, the BOCA® National Plumbing Code Commentary and the Plumbing of Residential Fire Sprinklers and has also co-authored the Illustrated National Plumbing Code Design Manual. National standard committees include ANSI/ASME, IAPMO, ASTM, NSF, ICC, and ASSE. Mr. Ballanco is both a Registered Professional Engineer and Licensed Master Plumber.
Venting large areas that have few walls (kitchens, mechanical rooms, warehouses, plants, etc.) can be a challenge for many engineers. We have provided overviews in the past of different
large open areas, the challenges they provide and the respective solutions. Although some codes allow horizontal
many other IPC following AHJ’s do not. The class will go through real life project examples of how to vent different
middle of a large open space.

Presenter: Paul BakerDirector of the Plumbing Industry Train-ing Center
Mr. Baker is currently Director of the Plumbing Industry Training Center in Troy, MI. He has been an exceptional instructor at the Training Center for many years prior, providing great value
to the Apprenticeship Program.
Presenter: Michael MelaragniGuardian Plumbing & Heating
Mr. Melaragni has numerous years in the Plumbing Industry and has served as an outstanding Director of the Plumbing Industry Training Center for many years. Mike is currently utilizing his ex-pertise at Guardian Plumbing and Heat-
ing in Livonia, MI.
The Design Class for this meeting will cover general plumbing waste and vent installation considerations that engineers should know when laying out their design. We all know contractors sometimes think we are crazy for show-ing some designs the way we do – this is our chance to learn
avoid installation problems during the design phase.
The Eastern Michigan Chapter of ASPE hosts a series of Plumbing Design Classes from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM in ad-dition to our technical program. This year's series is sure to provide details of interest to many plumbing professionals. It is helpful/important to bring your MI Plumbing Code Book if you plan to attend.

Committee report
The ASPE AAC meeting was held at Society HQ in Rosemont, IL on April 12th. It was hosted by our outstanding
Director Brian Henry and chaired by
representatives from EWS Water, Willoughby, Keeney Mfg., NIBCO, Bradford-White, Charlotte Pipe, Watts, Zurn, and NSF attended.
Our convention partners were also there. These included representative from Taffy Events Strategies, and Freeman Company. They are the backbone of our upcoming convention and expo that will be held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta September 28 – October 3.
Vince started the meeting by informing everyone that he
He gave us the exact date, time, minute and second with pin-point accuracy! Do you think he’s looking forward to it?
Suriner with Keeney Mfg. personally thanked Vince for his service to ASPE and the committee agreed.
Registration for the event has begun. You should know ARCSA is working closely with ASPE to combine their conference with ours. Their events will not compete for the same space or educational sessions as ours. This has the potential to add an additional 200 people to our expo. ASPE has set aside 15 booth spaces for them.
Did you know the average age of ASPE membership has dropped from 57 to 49! How great is that? I know I am one of those pushing the numbers up so any and all new members we can bring into society and mentor, the better.

gas systems – do not take into account any diversity. Take the sum of all max loads for sizing piping systems.
• When you have a new gas service for a project and you have coordinated with the local utility, it is wise to put the utility company name and contact number of the person you talked to on the drawings. This will aid the contractor to expedite the process.
• When the gas main regulator has a red cap on it – that means the gas is at an elevated pressure (over 7 inches WC).
• Some seismic areas require an emergency gas shut-off valve that automatically closes when there is an earthquake. This is typically at the main service to the property- however on one of my recent projects the insurance carrier required it on the branch line coming into a new remote service building.
• Carbon dioxide actually has the most GHG emissions, though most would think it is methane.

Hello from your VP Tech!
First of all, let’s extend a big THANK YOU to our tabletop and event sponsors last month:
April Meeting: Viega, Burke Agency and Lozuaway & Associates!
Our April meeting started with a GREAT presentation from Tarolyn
Buckles and Allan Schneck from Onyx Enterprise, Inc. Both civil engineers, Tarolyn and Allen presented on a number of topics that deal with both civil and plumbing engineers. They also brought in very cool examples of different underground pipe materials that have been used through the years. Tarolyn and Allen shared the history of Civil engineering and thoroughly covered the different ways civil engineers and plumbers look at storm design. Civil engineers want to prevent the storm water from getting to the sewers – from
ways to replace city underground piping in place. Overall the presentation was very well received and we hope to be able to bring Tarolyn and Allen back again to talk to more areas where Civil and Plumbing interact!
Our main event was from Bill Grayzar, from DSD who educated us all about fuel gas systems. Here is a brief overview of my takeaways:
• We all know odorant is added to natural gas in order to detect leaks – but I did not know it is only added at the City Gate/PRV location – not at the source plant!
• The term British Thermal Unit (BTU) is the amount of energy it takes to increase one pound of water 1 degree F. AND even though the brits are on the metric system, when the term BTU came into existence they were using IP! So there’s the answer to the question many of us have had over the years about why it is called the British Thermal Unit when the units are in IP and not SI!
• Natural gas is lighter than air, but propane and butane are both heavier than air. Thus they need more combustion air per cubic foot of gas.
• Cast iron is not recommended on fuel gas piping, and copper isn’t either when the gas is more than 0.3 grains
• Always leave room under the dirt leg to remove the cap and clean out the trap!
• Gas piping has to enter the building above grade.
• Don’t forget that pressure regulators located indoors need to be vented to the outside.
• When calculating the total connected load in natural
