MALTA

Some days ago a lady came to our classroom to show us the beautiful craft of Maltese lace. In Maltese

it is called bizzilla. This lady showed us the tools that she needs for her hobby. She uses a very hard

pillow called trajbu, wooden bobbins called ëombini, a pattern, lots of pins and thread.

Our teacher showed us old photos that showed even children making bizzilla! We saw some beautiful

objects made of bizzilla, made some puzzles about bizzilla and even tried it out ourselves!

First she pins a pattern on the pillow, then she fills the bobbins with thread. Afterwards she weaves the

bobbins very carefully to make beautiful designs. She uses lots of pins to keep her work on the pillow.

She also explained that it is a very old craft and that in the past many people especially women used to

sit outside in the warm weather with their friends and they would make bizzilla together.

Dressing up for Carnival by 3.3

I love carnival very much because I can wear anything I want. This year I’m going to wear a costume of Snow White. In school we have lots of activities including the carnival parade, where we parade in the school yard for all students to see.

The pictures show some of us in costume. We look great, don’t we? Carnival is celebrated over 5 days in Malta. It starts on a Friday and ends the following Tuesday. On Monday and Tuesday we have no school, so we have more leisure time to go and enjoy Carnival with our family in Valletta, the capital city of Malta. Chayenne

MALTA Passju by 2.3

To play this game you need to draw a design

with numbers on the floor. We used chalk to

draw it.

Standing in front of the passju, you throw a

little stone on number 1. If you miss, you will

lose your turn. If the stone lands on the num-

ber, you jump on both feet (on 1 and 2), then

on one foot (on 3), on both feet again (on 4

and 5) and keep on jumping on one or both

feet until you reach number 9.

When you reach number 9, you will jump

back to 1 and 2 and grab the stone from

number 1. You then give the stone to the

next person playing. When it is time for

your turn again, you will throw the stone on

number 2. Then repeat for all numbers. The

person who arrives on number 9 first wins

the game.

This is a simple game which we, as

a class enjoyed playing a lot with

our teacher during the PE lesson.

The teacher told us that instead

of drawing the design with chalk,

we can also use mats with numbers

and form the same design.

It is the best place for walks even in

winter. Especially when a flight of

swans comes from the north. Lots of

people come to see them and feed

them. .

Мartenitsa

Necessary materials:

• white woollen thread

• red woollen thread

• cardboard 5-6 сm

Preparation:

1. You need a white and a red woollen

thread

2. Tie the two threads at one end

3. Stretch tightly the threads and start

twisting them in one direction

4. Match the two ends and let them free.

The two threads will twist themselves.

5. Fold the cardboard and start winding red

thread around it.

7. Tuck the twisted thread into the folded

part of the cardboard.

8. Cut the wound thread where it is not tied

to get tassels.

9. Take another piece of thread and tie at a

lower place to form the head. This way you

can make the hands and Penda is ready. To

make Pizho, follow the same procedure but

you will need to make his legs.

Walking in the Sea Garden

BABA MARTA is an old Bulgarian tradition. On 1st March each year we start wear-

ing martenitsas. They are different designs but Pizho and Penda are the most popular.

Red colour means good health and white means long life. We wear them until we see

the first stork. Then we take them off and tie them on a fruit tree.

We are third and fifth grade students. We often walk in the near forest, learn how

to use a map and a compass and how to put up a tent. We renew the marking and

collect the litter.

In the end we play games and have a picnic.

Blind man’s buff

Blind man's buff is played in a spacious area,

such as outdoors or in a large room, in which one

player, designated as "It", is blindfolded and

gropes around attempting to touch the other

players without being able to see them, while the

other players scatter and try to avoid the person

who is "it", hiding in plain sight and sometimes

teasing them to make them change direction.

In one of the versions “the blind man” has to

guess who is the player that he has caught.

HIDE—AND—SEEK

In Bulgaria indefinite

number of children

can play the game.

One has to be chosen

for “seeker” and the

others are “hiders”.

The seeker closes his

eyes and counts slowly aloud to a certain

number while the other players are hiding.

Hiders should make a dash for Home Base,

which is previously marked. Touching the

base area makes a hider safe, and the aim

of the game is to touch base without being

tagged. The seeker continues to search for

hiders and if he/she finds none then he is

the seeker again in the next game. How-

ever, if he finds and tags someone before

they are able to touch base, he calls out in

a loud ‘That’s Michael! But if the seeker

confuses the name of the player the game

starts from the beginning.

Broken phone

Broken phone is a game that Bulgarian children

play. Children are placed side by side in a row

and the first one whispers in his neighbour’s ear

any word, phrase or sentence. The action re-

peats until the last child hears the word and says

it aloud. Very often the last child says something

that has nothing to do with the original word and

this is the fun of the game. If the final word is not

correct, the child goes last in the telephone row.

Burn, burn handkershief

Burn, burn handkerchief In this game the children squat in a

circle. Only one kid holds a handkerchief and runs around the

circle singing “Burn, burn handkerchief, the dog is pulling it!”.

His task is to drop the hanky behind one’s back. The one that

gets the hanky stands up and starts chasing the other one and

tries to take his place in the circle. This game is really funny and

you should try to play it.

White butterflies

White butterflies is a game that is

widespread all over Bulgaria. The par-

ticipants are mainly girls. They ar-

range in a circle. Two girls hold their

hands under the elbows and dance

spinning around in the middle of the

circle. Everybody sings:

White butterflies, Where did you fly? Near is your way, Select your pals ... The first is mine The second is yours…

While singing the last words each of the dancing girls runs to the

others and selects one that encircles them. The new couple

enters the circle and begins dancing under the accompani-

ment of the song.

My hobby is reading comics. I often read them. I read them in

my free time. I read comics in the house or in the garden. I read

them because sometimes I have nothing else to do. :-D

Children games in my country

In our free time, we like to play different games. During the breaks at

school, we spend time playing games such as:

Tag

It's a game on a small or larger area . A person who is a tag catches up and

has to touch any of the other children before he or she squats or touches for

example a wood thing. If he or she is touched, they become a tag. There are

plenty of types of games, one of them is a frozen tag. It consists in the fact

that a person is caught with legs apart and can not move until the other per-

son does not move under her legs. A tag wins if he or she can catch (freeze)

a l l p a r t i c i p a n t s p l a y i n g t h e g a m e .

A tag can be combined with "Old bear fast asleep." At the end of all the

songs, they disperse and the "bear" wakes up and chases the participants,

and the person who he touches first becomes the bear and the game begins

again.

Peekaboo

The rules are not complicated and I think they are known to all of you. The

person (or group of individuals) covers his or her eyes and counts to a fixed

number, and the other participants playing this time look for the best hiding

place. The winner is the one who is found the last. A person found first be-

comes looking for in the next round.

Children games in my country

Rubber game

How to play the gum? The rules are simple, but extremely difficult to describe. To play

you need a flexible rubber, in which there are two people, a third jumps. You have to

jump and pop . You jump at the lowest level to jump, then at calves, knees, thighs, and

on up until the neck. He who can do that at all levels is unmistakably called a true

c h a m p i o n .

Stalking The younger children can have fun playing stalking – a game that will turn an ordinary

family on an exciting adventure walk. One person goes and leaves behind traces, such

as tying a coloured ribbon on the branches of trees, or drawing with chalk arrows, so

that others can find it later. Stalking is similar to the search for a hidden treasure. In

some mysterious place such as trees cracking, you hide "a treasure chest". Mark the

path to the treasure with arrows made out of sticks, chalk-drawn or pre-prepare a sim-

ple map, through which children will find a sweet surprise.

Caps

Draw a line on the ground with a piece of chalk or stone on the pavement, beaten with

a stick on the ground or smooth sand on the edge of the sandbox. The track width is de-

pendent on the number of participants - the more players, the greater should be the

track. Mark the start line and the finish line, and between them everything could

" h a p p e n " , T h e t r a c k c a n t u r n .

Set the caps at the start, side by side, the front side to the back, and flip a cap to move

forward. We snap a change and so we race to the finish line. Falling outside the line of

the track means missing a turn. The winner is the player whose cap crosses the finish

l i n e f i r s t .

The game should begin by collecting a sufficient number of caps and flags to decorate

the countries whose representatives take part in cycling races. An interesting idea may

be a small change in the rules such as caps adorn the flags of countries participating in

the Euro 2012 tournament.

Hopscotch

The game is based on skillful passing through the eight fields, throwing a pebble and

maintain for a long time on one leg.

A participant throws the first stone and is on one leg, jumps in the field, raises the

stone, skips and jumps out the rest of the field outside. You jump in the “arms” both on

the way to and in the way back. For the last field ("head"), he or she jumps, rotates in

t h e a i r a n d j u m p s b a c k .

This game can freely be played and diversified by e.g. arranging squares with numbers

in the shape of an envelope, or using a snail shell or putting a pebble on the bent legs

while jumping. And so on and so on …

Hanging around

In Italy we like to hang around in our free time with a group of friends.Boys and girls stroll along two streets: Via Prione and Corso Cavour. In these streets there are many types of shops. We sometimes stop and sit to look at the boys and girls that pass to check them out!

Moreover, along the streets there are squares that we call piazze. There are community centres that we call oratori where we play foot-ball, mini football, basketball, ping- pong, and board games. Oratories belong to the church and they are free to attend. In summer, we go to the beach. While in winter we go to the luna park, cinema and park. We also play many sports. The most common are: swimming, football, basketball, karate, kick boxing and dance. We like listening to music. (Camilla, Cristiana, Asja, Naim 11)

We love football! We go training two times a week with our team Arsenal Spezia and on weekends we play against other teams. We are also fans of Inter favourite football club. We have a local team too called Spe-zia. In Italy there are 20 football clubs in the premier league/A series. The first teams go on to play in Champions League while the others go on to play in Europa League. The top team wins a shield (scudetto). Every four years we look forward to the world cup! The most famous footballer to play locally as a boy is Gigi Buffon, now Juventus goal-keeper. (Cristiano, William, Salvatore 11 )

Hi, we love dancing! We train six days a week for one and a half hours each time. We wear black leggings and a t-shirt with our dance school’s name on it. We have compe-titions like the one we did in Florence last month. We do lots of types of dancing, for example, modern, Boogie Woogie, classical, break dance, hip hop, acrobatic, choreo-graphic composition and disco dance. There are 14 girls and 1 boy in our class. We have been dancing for nine years. Eleonora & Laura (12 years old)
