However, different types of breath odor can also indicate certain types of serious medical conditions. For example, a "fruity breath odor" is one of the characteristic symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis, which can be fatal within hours or days. Another example is a "fecal breath odor" which can indicate certain types of intestinal blockage. Have any breath odor symptoms examined promptly by a medical professional. Why: may suggest Psychogenic halitosis (i.e. anxiety about breath odor often without having it) if you have noticed the breath odor and others have not. 2. How long have you noticed the breath odor? Why: to determine if acute or chronic. 3. What is your teeth and gum hygiene routine? Why: to establish possibility of breath odor being due to poor hygiene or anaerobic infections of the mouth. Dietary history? Why: certain foods can precipitate breath odor e.g. garlic, fish, curry, onions, caffeine. 8. Cigarette smoking? Why: cigarette smoking is a direct cause of breath odor and may increase the risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, larynx and trachea which also may cause breath odor. 9. Dry mouth e.g. on waking?
