The Children’s Museum of Richmond (CMoR)has been serving children and families fromthroughout Virginia since 1981. In that time, morethan a million children and families fromRichmond and throughout Virginia have exploredinteractive educational experiences that havestimulated their interest in art, science and thehumanities. Last year, the museum welcomed427,889 making it the 8th most visited children’smuseum in the country. In May of 2014, CMoRopened its fourth location in Fredericksburg.
Children’s museums are places where childrenlearn through play and exploration inenvironments designed just for them. ReflectingRichmond’s diverse community, CMoR createsplayful, interactive learning experiences.Children’s museums are unique in that they serveall children from across the socio-economicspectrum. Part of the magic created daily comesfrom children with every advantage playing andlearning alongside children impacted withdevelopmental and/or economic challenges. Anactive and successful children’s museum is oftenthe only place in a community that touches everyfamily and gives them shared learningexperiences, no matter their socio-economicsituation.
The Children’s Museum of Richmond has a richhistory of service to the entire community, withparticular emphasis on programming for childrenfrom economically challenged areas. Last year themuseum welcomed 99,172 guests at a free orreduced rate. The museum has been recognizedfor its service to the Richmond Public Schools
through SOL-based education programs, itssuccess with Head Start participants, its efforts onbehalf of children in foster care and its uniquework with children identified as having specialneeds. From single teen parents learning to playappropriately with their babies to children fromsubsidized housing enjoying healthy breakfastswhile learning about the importance of goodnutrition and exercise, the Children’s Museum ofRichmond continually offers programming thatdirectly impacts vulnerable populations.
CMoR offers families the unique opportunityto experience learning in a fun and engagingenvironment. According to a University of Illinoisstudy, children are bored a staggering 50% of thetime they learn in schools. By allowing thechildren to learn through play, learning becomesinvigorated. While Children’s Museums add joy tolearning, they also include parents in the learningprocess, which contributes positively todevelopment.
CMoR is the first cultural organization mostchildren visit, and is a complement to the efforts inschools, child-care centers and homes to enrichthe lives and education of children. In fact, alleducational programs the museum offers are inaccordance with the Virginia Standards ofLearning and Virginia’s Foundation Blocks of EarlyLearning standards. The museum offers anexperience for children to build a foundation forfuture appreciation of other art and culturalinstitutions and create a life-long love of learningand commitment to the arts.

Motorists in the early twentieth
century faced as much misfortune and
obstacles as they did excitement and
adventure when they took their new
automobiles out on the open road. The
new sport of motoring, which only the
very wealthy could afford, required
participants to be strong willed and
physically capable to make the long,
muddy, bumpy journey. In early
automobile races, it was not always the
fastest car that won, but often the one that
broke down the least.
Even if the car did stay in one piece
with minimal repairs, the question
remained, “Which way do we go?”
Although the most direct route might not
have been the most passable, and the time
it took to go the long way could leave one
broken down far from help—nothing
could stop these adventurers.
In 1910, what is now known as US
Route 1 was in the early stages of
becoming the Washington-Richmond
Highway. Newspapers of both cities, as
well as Fredericksburg’s own Free Lanceand Daily Star, ran a constant flow of
articles keeping citizens updated on the
government’s discussions.
Not everyone was in favor of
improving the roads. In 1909, the
Washington Post stated that the one cause
of fear for the “agriculturalists” was that
they “look[ed] upon the road as a means
for the gratification of the whim of the
automobilist, and they fear[ed] the
automobile as a menace to their horses,
their vehicles, and their lives.” The
newspaper encouraged them to see there
were more farmers to benefit from the
roads than automobiles. In rural areas,
aggression against motorists was not an
unheard of incident. Farmers would
scatter glass and tacks on the roadway to
cause damage to the automobiles or bury
rakes and saws in the road so as to flatten
passing motorists’ tires.
However, if motorists could avoid
muddy roads and angry country folks, and
keep all of their car’s parts attached, they
were rewarded with a lovely drive through
the Virginia countryside.

I love a great bargain! Department storeclearance racks aside, nothing spellssummer like a handmade YARD SALEsign! For the avowed bargain hunter, it'senough to cause salivation like Pavlov's dog!I would rather spend an hour in search of arelic than ten minutes choosing from a rackof properly priced and neatly arrangedanything. Cataloged and pristine items havea place during the holiday rush or end-of-season sales, but there is a feeling ofaccomplishment from unearthing a hiddentreasure at the back of a bin of purses or thebottom of a crate of books! "Junk stores"and road side shops are also intriguing, buta yard sale is the urbanites hunting ground! So, when we spot the sign, alert the car tomake the u-turn, slam into park and attemptto amble nonchalantly amongst the goodies, here are a few tips to make our huntingground a more enjoyable experience:
1. Assume everything you touch has asentimental value. It was once a gift, belonged to a loved one, or is part of atreasured memory.
2. Resist the urge to ramble and scatter. Ifyou spot something at the bottom, carefullymove the items above without breakage ordamage.
3. Prices are often thought about and pre-set prior to the sale. Mild haggling ispermissible, but berating an items value orthe seller's pricing preference is rude.Remember rule #1.
4. Be mindful of where you step. Space isoften at a premium and items may be placedin a haphazard manner. Stepping on or overanything may obligate you to purchase thedamaged item.
5. Stick to the sale area. Refrain fromopening doors, wandering around back orhelping yourself to items that are clearly nota part of the sale or requesting to use thefacilities.
6. Respect the posted hours. A sale whichbegins at 7 A.M. is still really early and toshow up or poke around at 6 A.M. istantamount to entering a store with theemployees!
7. Yard shoppers assume all risk after thesale! If you bought something which youthought had value which later proves to bea great replica, well, if it fooled you, then itobviously is good enough to use, display orplace in your next yard sale!
8. When you finally reach the bottom ofthe barrel and still cannot find the matchingitem, accept that it may be missing or amismatch and that is what renders it a yardsale item.
9. Be patient and be kind to other buyers.Don't push, snatch or shove to get tosomething first.
10. Mind the little hands and feet ofchildren who accompany you. Also, remember that a toy or stuffed animal maynot decrease in value, even if a tantrum isthrown by the adult or the child. Don't allowyour child to bond with the item before youhave successfully purchased the it. Pay first, smile longer.

The effects of our Nation’s Civil Warare indelible on the landscape of theFredericksburg region. Tangible remindersof the cultural impact dot the countryside. Some are understated and remote. About12 miles west of downtownFredericksburg, on Route 3, stands theWilderness Baptist Church. On May 2,1863, the fabled “Flank Attack” byStonewall Jackson’s forces swept acrossthe surrounding ground, sending theFederal 11th Corps eastward, in apanicked rout. Along the edge of theWilderness Baptist Church cemetery, lie acluster of graves belonging to the Toddfamily, a lineage dating back to the mideighteenth century in SpotsylvaniaCounty. One of the stones marks the finalresting place of Richard Lewis Todd, b.May 8, 1836, d. May 29, 1911. Sharing thismarker is his brother, Charles RobertTodd, bearing these simple lines:
Killed By A ShellOctober 7, 1865
At Rest
The inscribed date of death has ledmany visitors to speculate that CharlesRobert Todd had perhaps been a civilianvictim of an unexploded artillery shell, carelessly mishandled just six monthsafter the war's end. Tragic incidents havebeen recorded that document such a fate.Often times the victims were curiouschildren who would find "dud"projectiles, only to end up maimed orkilled when a rock or hammer was
applied in an effort to break open theirdeadly find. Numerous similar incidentsaround Gettysburg are detailed byhistorian William A. Frassanito in his bookEarly Photography at Gettysburg.
The true fate of Charles Robert Toddhowever, is not as some have assumed, but no less tragic. The year of his death, asit is inscribed, is incorrect. The year wasmistakenly entered as 1865, when thereality was 1864. The circumstancesplayed out roughly seventy-seven milessouth of Spotsylvania, near theDarbytown Road, south east ofRichmond. On October 7, 1864, PrivateTodd, while serving in the FredericksburgArtillery, was killed during fighting northof Fort Harrison. According to former NPSChief Historian Robert K. Krick's book,

The Fredericksburg Artillery, a Unionartillery shell had struck the muzzle of thebattery's No. 4 gun, killing Todd, andseverely wounding four other members ofthe gun crew.
It is uncertain if Charles actuallyshares this grave with his younger brotherRichard. His remains may in fact lie nearthe field of battle. There are manydocumented cases where circumstancesprevented the recovery of a loved one’sbody, but many times they arememorialized in family plots, and CharlesTodd may be one such case. Richard, andanother brother, Oscar, both served in the9th Virginia Cavalry, but survived the war.
Due to contradictory ages recordedin the only two census records whereCharles is enumerated by name, it isuncertain of his age when killed. Based onthe age given in the 1850 census, we canspeculate he was born in 1832, given theentered age of 18. Ten years later, in the1860 census, his age is given as 23, a fiveyear variance during a ten year span.Other sources indicate he was born onAugust 9, 1833. This would make him 31at the time of his death.
The Todd's are known most famously
in Spotsylvania for their tavern, located atthe Brock Road and Catharpin Roadintersection. According to historian NoelHarrison's research, the Todd family hadsold the property around 1845 to FlaviusJosephus Ballard who then re-sold theproperty in 1869. The intersection wherethe tavern stood still maintains the name"Todd's Tavern".
John Cummings is a visualhistorian and the author of two books on theFredericksburg/Spotsylvania region. Heprovides battlefield guide services andresearch assistance to visitors. He has alsowritten for several national and localmagazines and newspapers, and providedhistorical research and commentary for fourdocumentary films. He served on the formerSpotsylvania Courthouse Tourism andSpecial Events Commission, and is thechairperson for the Friends of theFredericksburg Area Battlefields, (FoFAB). InFebruary 2011, he became the co-founder ofthe reactivated 23rd Regiment, United StatesColored Troops.
