Hello Alderbrook Family & Friends, Alderbrook is already noticing signs of spring! The Clubhouse and Annex continue to be bustling hubs of energy for activities. committee meetings, group golf clinics, cooking classes by Chef Dina, fireside chats by the Head Pro, exercise and yoga classes, poker, bridge, hand 'n foot, bingo, bunco, mahjong, dominoes, table tennis, live music and karaoke, trivia games, family and friend get-togethers, special dinners and, of course, Happy Hour. Valentine’s Day

was an elegant affair romantically celebrated with an exquisite menu, and Fat Tuesday was celebrated in grand style with authentic Mardi Gras tastes and sounds, which included an evening of big band music by a quartet from the Olympia Jazz Senators! It was rewarding for our restaurant team to hear from so many who enjoyed these special evenings. It’s a privilege to observe community interactions here at AGYC and interesting to note how shared responsi-bility of common assets actually acts as scaffolding for the unique social interactions that are a priceless benefit of the Alderbrook lifestyle. AGYC Star of the Month By Dawn Hayman, Office Administrator AGYC is pleased to present the very first AGYC Star of the Month to Executive Chef Leon Longan. This is a new employee recognition program organized by Dawn Hayman and Taylor Wood to recognize employees for demonstrating exceptional work performance.

Leon was among the employees nominated in February for going above and beyond the call of duty. His name was chosen from among the nominees to receive the award. The three traits that define Leon, in his own words, are "timeliness, creativity and family guy." Leon defines teamwork as excellence. In the kitchen,

Leon and his team strive for excellence by helping each other out in any way possible and leaving the work area clean and set up for the next shift. When asked about his favorite and least favorite meals, Leon answered "lobster" and "liver" in that order. Leon’s favorite things about working at AGYC are that he has the freedom to be creative with the dishes he prepares and he loves the members and his co-workers. Away from work, Leon most enjoys his down time by playing a friendly game of poker.

The nominees for AGYC's Star of the Month.

Executive Chef Leon Longan is AGYC's Star of the Month for March 2020.

Deadline for Running for the Board of Directors Is March 24 By Sharon Ferguson, Chair of the Nominating Committee What does it take to be an AGYC Board of Directors member? First and foremost is a desire to serve. Alderbrook has big decisions and projects before us regarding the business of running our community. It takes a member who sees the unique beauty and livability of our community and wants to contribute to our continuing success. Our community benefits when members get involved and contribute. If you want more information about running for the Board, feel free to call Nominating Committee members Eileen Baumgardner, Rhonda Westover or myself. We would be happy to talk with you. If you want to contribute by running for the Board, contact us by the deadline of Tuesday, March 24, and sooner is even better. The Nominating Committee will meet on Tuesday, March 3, at 4pm.

AGYC Foremast March 2020

From the Greens Superintendent—Chad Johnson

The most common question I've been asked in the last few years has been: "What's wrong with the large practice putting green?" The short answer is a moss epidemic. The Scots have a saying: "Moss is a sign of poverty in the soil." That saying dates back hundreds of years and still applies today. While poor or undernourished soil is a significant cause of moss outbreaks on golf courses, the reasons for this pest taking root are quite varied in nature. Moss thrives in areas

that receive a ton of moisture. This is especially true with our damp, cool spring and autumn. Moss has been an all too familiar problem on putting green surfaces in the last 10 to 15 years. One reason cited by researchers is the demand for fast greens, which result in thinner turf canopies and thus cause more stress on the putting surfaces. In my opinion, the removal of mercury and other heavy metals, including phosphorus, from fertilizer in the last two decades is another reason for moss infestations on putting greens. Mercury is known to have a significant impact on moss development, and controlling moss was quite simple when mercury-based products were commonplace. While no Green Superintendent would ever put down mercury to control moss, it was always a secondary benefit. Moss often seeks to colonize open areas in the turf damaged by unrepaired ball marks. When the moss moves into the canopy, it outcompetes grass for nutrients and eventually will crowd out the blades if not eradicated. Even when moss goes dormant, it doesn't fully die and can keep coming back in the same areas. There can be a million moss spores in a single green canopy. You can easily see quarter-sized patches of moss. Upon closer inspection, however, you can spot thousands of spores that will spread if given a chance. This is especially a problem nowadays in the Pacific Northwest. Only as the problem has manifested itself in recent years have some foliar sprays finally been under development in the lab although few have been marketed yet. The product we have tried under the name "Quicksilver" is great for the prevention of moss but has not been as effective at eradicating moss. Heavy applications of iron sulfate have also been used with some success. Somewhat surprisingly, the best results we've experienced is a product found in many households – Dawn Ultra dishwashing detergent applied at 5 to 8 ounces of product per 1,000 square feet. It may be used during cool or warm weather at 14-day intervals. Four to six applications can actually control moss in some cases. The large practice putting green has been on the Green Committee's chopping block for the last few years, but its demise was postponed as we tried to kill the moss without destroying the green. Unlike the small "island practice green," which was made from plugs harvested during aerification of the greens, the large practice green was installed on a shoestring budget by volunteers and lacks an organic soil profile found in the other greens on the course. The latest stay of execution for the large practice green will be re-evaluated this coming summer. If the moss control and eradication plan for 2020 doesn't meet our needs, the large green will be tilled under and re-built in two stages with harvested plugs from the regular greens after aerification. This will take the large practice green out of service for quite some time and is why we have tried to solve the moss problem by other means before a total do-over. As the Green Superintendent, it is not only my goal to provide the best conditions, both aesthetically and in terms of playability, but I am also mindful of our responsibility to the Hood Canal watershed and the long-term safety of our drinking water. AGYC has always led by example when it comes to the safety of our streams, drinking water, natural habitat and wildlife, making us a cut above the rest. Thank you for your patience.

AGYC Foremast March 2020

From the Head Golf Professional—Sam Smith

As I’m sure most of you reading this article know, we have a new World Handicap System from the USGA and R&A this year. Posting begins on March 1, and I wanted to emphasize a few things we’ve talked about in our Fireside Chats. It is important to know that while members playing in our Men’s Club and Ladies Club events will notice there is a change to their "Course Handicaps," there's not much difference in posting your scores. There are quite a few rules about posting your scores, and I’ve listed some of the changes below. After January, one of the most dismal months for golf weather I can remember, it was great to

have quite a few nice golf days in February. Our Ladies Winter Clinic was great, and we were finally able to get out and work on our bunker game. We will have our final Ladies Winter Clinic on Wednesday, March 25, at 11am with lunch afterwards for $20, including a drink ticket. The subject will be hitting from the fairway with a focus on irons, hybrids and fairway woods. On Tuesday, March 17, we’ll have a fun 9-hole Coed/Couples event with a Chapman format starting at 3pm ($20 per team entry fee). Then, we'll target new or beginning golfers at our New Golfer Orientation on Saturday, March 21, at 11am. If you've always wanted to play or haven't swung a club for 20 years, take advantage of this opportunity! The session is free, and clubs will be provided along with a complimentary 9-hole round after the clinic. One of our most popular events of the year, our Ball-Buster Tournament, is on Saturday, March 28. This is a 2-Person Scramble format with very tough pin placements, and players will play the Black Tees, and maybe a little more. Entry fee for this event is $20 per player. The Ball-Buster is also open to guests, who will need to pay their green fees in addition to the entry fee. Players must have an active GHIN handicap to participate for Net Prizes. Last month, we were able to hold our 2020 edition of the EZ-Open on February 22 where the men played the Gold Tees and the ladies played from a created tee shorter than the Gold Tees. The handicaps were very low with the new Course Handicap calculation in the new World Handicap System, and there were still some stand-out scores. Low Net in the Ladies Division went to Patty Murphy with a round of 98 translating to a net score of 53, and Ladd Dooley took home the Men’s EZ-Open championship with a net score of 64. As promised, here are a few of the changes that you should know about for posting scores in 2020. The biggest change that will affect posting your scores will be the new "Double Bogey Max." This means that the highest score that you are allowed to post on any hole, for handicap purposes, is a Net Double Bogey. Just a reminder, a Net Double Bogey is a Double Bogey plus any handicap strokes you receive on a hole. For instance, if you’re an 18 handicap, you would get 1 handicap stroke on every hole. This means that the highest score on any hole you'll be allowed to post would be a Triple Bogey since you receive 1 handicap stroke on every hole. If you need further help understanding the new handicap system, please see either Asst. Pro Grant Cation or me, and we will assist you in figuring out where your handicap strokes apply. Another change is that if you play 7 to 13

holes you will post a 9-hole score and if you play 14 or more holes you will post an 18-hole score. For any holes played, you will post par plus any handicap strokes you receive. Again, if you need help with this, come see us. Handicaps are now updated daily so it is important to post your scores on the day they are played. There are more changes, but these are the biggest changes for score posting.

Congratulations to EZ-Open winners Patty Murphy and Ladd Dooley.

AGYC Foremast March 2020

continued from page 4 Men’s Club News By Mark Maxfield

Being a newbie to the area and hearing about last year's Snowmageddon, I was dreading the winter months for golf. Boy, was I surprised. The golf gods were awfully good to us if you didn’t mind wearing three layers of clothing and playing in hip boots. With the February 29 deadline looming, the Snow King Competition is getting very competitive with only a few strokes separating the top four places in both divisions. March 1 will be the first day of posting scores under the new World Handicap System (WHS) if you have paid your Men’s Club dues of $58. If you have not paid, drop your check in the Men’s Club box in the Golf Shop, or mail it to Tim Micek at PO Box 564, Union, WA. 98592. Mike Lambert has been putting the final touches on the Men’s Club schedule for the new year. Once completed, copies will be available on the Men’s Club bulletin board and copies will be made available at our first meeting of the year on April 8. It looks like a busy, fun schedule. Also, plans are being made to bring back the Captain’s Cup in late September, a two-day Eclectic event. And finally . . . A "gimme" putt can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers, neither of whom can putt very well. – Author Unknown

Well done, ladies. Well done! The AGYC Ladies Club stepped up and soundly trounced the Men’s Club in fundraising efforts for the Hood Canal Lion’s Club Polar Bear Plunge. Thank you to all who contributed to this very worthy cause (Mason County Emergency Services). It’s nice to see the Ladies Club winning the first year of the challenge, and it’s my hope we do so every year. Thank you, Rhonda Westover, for taking the plunge in style. Diann Pape, Handicap Chair, will hold an informational/workshop session on Thursday, April 2, at 9:30am to provide information and help on the new World Handicap System. Valentine's Day Dinner – Wasn't It Loverly? By Diann Pape, Foodie, Golf Bum and Domestic Goddess If you didn’t get one of the limited number of seats at the Valentine’s Day special dinner, you truly missed out on a wonderful four-course repast with three fabulous options for the entrée. The tables were beautifully dressed in white linen tablecloths, red napkins and red roses. Service was impeccable. The wine pairing that went with our delicious Ahi Tuna Avocado Tartare appetizer was a delicious Sparkling Rosé, which also went with our second course Warm Bacon Spinach Salad perfectly. The other option for the second course was a Wild Mushroom Bisque. Side note: The Sparkling Rosé was so good that I bought the last two bottles the next day. For our entrée, we had a choice of Roasted Top Sirloin Steak with a Cabernet Demi-glace, Halibut Cheeks with an Orange-Ginger glaze, or Fettuccine alla Carbonara prepared tableside by Chef Dina. Fred had the halibut cheeks, and I had the fettuccine, both wonderful choices. It was so fun to watch Chef Dina prepare the pasta in a huge Parmesan cheese bowl. The wine pairing was again perfect. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, a platter of the most wonderful-looking mini-desserts arrived. We were both so full, but the desserts and the wonderful sweet Port that came with them were too good to pass up. Yes, we indulged. I’m certainly glad our Clubhouse limits these kinds of dinners to special occasions. I’d weigh 500 pounds otherwise! What a wonderful place we live in.

Fred and Diann Pape enjoy a glass of Sparking Rosé with their Valentine's Day dinner at the Clubhouse.

Yacht Club, Bill Holtz, Commodore

Since 1974, Yacht Club has been instrumental in fostering friendship and community here at AGYC. On Monday, March 9, we set sail on another great season of fun. On that evening, we get together for a potluck at the Clubhouse featuring a baked potato bar, and the many great dishes, salads and desserts made by our talented membership. It is a St. Patrick’s Day theme, so wear green and celebrate your Irish heritage, even if you are like me, only Irish one day a year. Our callers will contact last year’s members to remind them of the event and suggest some potluck items. If you are new to the community, or were not a member last year, please come to

this first event to sign up, and contact our event coordinator, Patty Murphy, at [email protected]. The cost of membership in Yacht Club will remain a bargain at $30 per person for the 2020 season with our officers and volunteers collecting at the front door. We keep the cost low thanks to your generous potluck delicacies, our raffles at each event, and the tip jar at the Wickiup bar. Best of all, you never need a boat to be a Yacht Club member! The March 9 event starts at 5pm. Please don’t arrive prior to 4:45pm to give us time to set up the dining room and decorate for the evening. As a reminder, our 2020 schedule is: March 9 – Potato bar (St. Patrick’s Day theme) at 5pm at the Clubhouse April 13 – Italian potluck (Italian theme) at 5pm at the Clubhouse May 11 – Mexican potluck (Cinco de Mayo theme) at 5pm at the Clubhouse June 8 – Pulled Pork/Chicken potluck (Hawaiian theme) at 4pm at the Wickiup July 13 – Fried Chicken potluck (All-American theme) at 4pm at the Wickiup August 10 – BBQ Rib potluck (Western theme) at 4pm at the Wickiup September 14 – BBQ Salmon potluck (TBD theme) at 4pm at the Wickiup October 12 – Prime Rib Dinner (Officer Installation theme) at 5pm at the Clubhouse (fee applies) November 9 – Chili potluck (Veteran’s Day theme) at 5pm at the Clubhouse The officers thank you in advance for participating in the food, fun and camaraderie that makes us the premier Yacht Club in the known world. Spring Is in the Air By Paulette Johnston, Chair of the Activities Committee Wow! What a great party Fat Tuesday turned out to be. Thank you, Jackie Morgan, for the wonderful idea. The audience was enthralled by the smooth sounds of the Olympia Jazz Senators and blown away by the virtuosity of trumpet player and bandleader Tracey Hooker. The band played everything from When the Saints Go Marching In to music from Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream album and much more. The NOLA-inspired Mardi Gras menu should sustain partygoers through the 40 days of Lent. The Activities Committee was there to help with set up and then enjoyed the evening. Spring, I can almost see it. Your Activities Committee is looking forward to the warmer weather and has a few things planned for you in March. Bunco comes early this month – Thursday, March 5 at 5pm – so mark your calendars. If you have never played, come on out. It takes less than 30 seconds to learn, and the cost is $10. Sláinte! It's time to raise your glasses on St Patrick’s Day. Stop by the Clubhouse on Tuesday, March 17, from 5 to 7pm to sing your favorite tunes during karaoke and play a wee bit of Irish trivia. It's traditional so don't forget "the wearing of the green." Of course, the dinner special is corned beef and cabbage. We have two card making classes coming up on Monday, March 23, at 10am and Sunday, March 29, at 1pm (cost $30). Take home 16 beautiful handmade birthday cards for your efforts. Then, stretch your mental faculties at Trivia Night on Monday, March 23, at 5:30pm. Come show us what you know and win some prizes while doing it. Just get your team together and join us for some fun. If you don’t have a team, no problem. If you win, you just don’t have to share. Finally, the Spring Fair is filling up fast. If you're interested in being a vendor, contact the Activities Committee at [email protected]. If you just want to shop for local arts and crafts, join us on Saturday, March 28, from 10am to 3pm. As always, if you would like to join the Activities Committee, contact us at [email protected]. Our next meeting is Wednesday, March 11, at 10am.

Bill and Kelly Holtz (front row) and Marcia Hawkins, Michael Johnston and Jerry Hammack (back tow) are the big winners at Bunco Night on February 20.

Hidden inside the traditional King Cake at Mardi Gras is a tiny plastic baby symbolizing luck and prosperity for the finder. Bill Holtz and Glenda Stone, sitting at the same table, each found a baby in their piece of cake.

The dance floor is packed for the last Fat Tuesday dance as the Olympia Jazz Senators play “What a Wonderful World.”

New AGYC Members A warm welcome to our new AGYC members who joined us last month. Gretchen Schodde 1221 E Vine Maple Lane Union, WA 98592 Mailing Address: 7362 East SR-106 Union, WA 98592

1. Dick and Dawn Turnbull's 50th Anniversary Open House: All AGYC members are invited to Dick and Dawn Turnbull's 50th wedding anniversary open house on Saturday, March 21, from 2 to 5pm at the Clubhouse. 2. Dianne Brown's Thank You: Dianne and Bob Brown will always remember and appreciate the kindness and support offered by many Alderbrook friends and neighbors who have sent so many best wishes, cards and

care packages to Dianne in the hospital and at home since her back surgery on January 28. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This has been a stressful but necessary life event, and the many well wishes have had an obvious, positive effect on Dianne’s progress to date. She is two months away from driving a car and five months away from driving a golf ball. We thank everyone for their thoughts and caring (and great food and treats). Alderbrook is surely a one-of-a-kind place to live.

3. Cameo Boutique Is Named Business of the Year: Congratulations to Pam and Gary Hanson and Cameo Boutique & Wine Shop for being named the Business of the Year by the North Mason Chamber at the 2020 Awards Gala on February 22.

Don't Miss The Traveler Beer Mile on March 7 Run, walk or jog around the Alderbrook community and drink some suds at the at The Traveler Beer Mile on Saturday, March 7, from 11am until 2pm. The competition, co-sponsored by AGYC and Hood Canal Events, is a treasure for beer lovers and race purists alike and features local PNW brews. Open to all fitness levels, participants over 21 years of age will encounter three "beer stations" along the course. Don't worry! Root beer will be on tap for those underage or who don't wish to drink alcohol. Afterwards, join the tap take-over and taco bar party at the Clubhouse. Registration is $29 at the Hood Canal Events website https://hoodcanalevents.com.

Strategic Planning Committee By Bill Holtz, Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee At the January 20, 2020, Board of Directors meeting, the new AGYC Strategic Plan was adopted. It can be viewed in the member section of the AGYC website. Based on our annual member surveys, this plan was a labor of love for the Strategic Planning Committee over the past few years. It started as a re-write of the Vision and Mission Statements for the community and provides a high-level plan that all community development decisions can be filtered through. The new Strategic Plan is comprised of three primary objectives: 1. Achieving a financially secure homeowners association. 2. Maintaining the golf course as the anchor to the community. 3. Creating and implementing a Master Plan to support the requirements of a growing community and changing demographics. The next step for this plan is to recruit volunteers for the sub-committees or working groups that will help with the details to achieve these objectives. Based on the action items within the Strategic Plan, the Board has called upon three committees to help build expertise in the following areas: Green Committee – Working on ways to conserve water, and reduce the need for relying on PUD 1 as the sole source of water for the golf course. Finance Committee – Working to understand the new PUD 1 water rate structure, how to budget for the new rates, and how AGYC can best negotiate and lobby for utility rate stability. Strategic Planning Committee – Creating expertise and partnership with AGYC and external partners to develop a Master Plan for the community.

As chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, I am searching for members who would like to get involved in the development of the Master Plan. This plan will focus on future development, preservation of our natural beauty, and long-range planning of facility enhancements. Anyone with an interest in, or expertise in, community planning would be welcome. You can contact me at [email protected], or come to a Strategic Planning Committee meeting, held monthly. This is a long-term focus on the future of the AGYC community and will not happen overnight.

We will need to develop skills and be able to communicate with members and partners. Although it is hard to reach consensus on planning issues, we believe it is critical. Many of us have lived in other communities and have witnessed the problems associated with unplanned growth. The annual member surveys published each year by our committee are designed to keep our dreams, plans and decisions in line with members' wishes. The Strategic Planning Committee and the Master Plan group will surely need the input from all AGYC committees and looks forward to the journey. The next Strategic Planning Committee meeting is Tuesday, March 17, at 4pm.

Luigi’s Bingo Returns on March 19 By Norm Hammer Calling all bingo lovers! Don’t miss the first Luigi's Bingo Night of the new decade on Thursday, March 19. The spaghetti dinner at 4:30pm is optional. Bingo begins at 6pm. The cost is $12 for dinner and $10 for 10 bingo cards. Each bingo card includes three games played simultaneously. There is also a final split-the-pot bonus game. Winners get to take home great prizes, too. Luigi’s Bingo Night is the name given to an old Alderbrook tradition of raising money for community projects not covered in the budget or by a committee. Luigi’s is an independent fund-raising mechanism, which raises money by having bingo nights once or twice a year. These events are Luigi’s only fundraisers so we really rely on the community’s support! Remember, when you hear the word “Luigi’s,” it’s all about Alderbrook!

A table of avid bingo players waits for the next number to be called last February.

Farewell Alex Evans Alderbrook members gathered on February 28 to bid farewell to Alex Evans, who is leaving AGYC to pursue his welding career. Alex started in the "cart barn" in 2016 and moved to the restaurant where he has been a friendly and valued member of the wait staff. We will miss Alex and wish him well in his future endeavors.

"Freezin’ For A Reason” – The Polar Bear Plunge Raises $10,000 By Marnie Hart, Member of the Hood Canal Lions Club Thirty brrr-ave community-minded folks jumped, dove and cannon-balled into the frigid waters of Hood Canal in the 11th Annual Hood Canal Lions Polar Bear Plunge at the Alderbrook Resort & Spa on February 8. Why? To raise money for emergency services in Mason County! And they raised a pot of money nearly as big as a polar bear! Thanks to the jumpers, their sponsors, local business donors, community members and volunteers, more than $10,000 was raised to benefit Mason County’s Search & Rescue Unit, Dive Team, Chaplain Fund, and K-9 Unit, as well as the Union, Hoodsport, and Lake Cushman Fire Departments. This year, as in the past, AGYC members generously supported this event. Mike Lambert, Rhonda Westover and Head Pro Sam Smith all made the plunge. A great big warm “Thank You” to them. And many thanks to all who contributed to the fund-raising challenge between the Ladies Club and Men’s Club. Importantly, the Ladies Club won! But even more important, together, the two groups raised an amazing $4,800. AGYC itself donated four rounds of golf with a cart — one of 75 prizes given by local businesses and raffled off at the event. Hood Canal Lions Club extends its sincere gratitude to all who supported this worthy cause. We hope to see you again next February!

Standing left to right, our AGYC Polar Bear Plungers –Head Pro Sam Smith, Rhonda Westover and Mike Lambert – ready themselves for their dip into the bone-chilling waters of Hood Canal on February 8.

Mike Lambert and Sam Smith jump close to the dock to try to splash some spectators, but it didn't work.

Attired in a gold and white tutu and wearing a matching life preserver, Rhonda Westover flaunts her inimitable costume and demonstrates her skill with a plunger.

Mother Nature blesses the Polar Bear Plunge by forming a beautiful rainbow over Hood Canal.

Organics Collection Site Open March 7 By Jeff Bickford, Chair of the Environment Committee Well, it's been a wet and wild winter, and you likely have accumulated some storm debris, or have started to do some pruning in anticipation of spring. We have good news. The Organics Collection Site (OCS) will be open for the first time this year on Saturday, March 7, from 10am to 12pm. Please note that this is the only day that it will be open in March. The regular schedule of being open every Monday and the first Saturday of the month begins in April. Remember, the OCS accepts only clean woody and brushy material. We are not able to accept grass clippings or sod, blackberry or ivy vines, or scotch broom. So, get busy in your yard and bring your debris down to the OCS on March 7. The Environment Committee will meet on Saturday, March 14, at 8am.

The AGYC maintenance crew performs a controlled, one-time burn of the accumulated yard debris at the Organics Collection Site on February 26 to reduce the fire danger and improve operation of the site in the future.
