Vancouver, Washington sits on the north bank of the Columbia River directly across from Portland, Oregon. The Cascades Mountain Range rises on the east and Mt. Hood, Mt. Saint Helens, and Mount Adams loom majestically above the city. “America’s Vancouver” has experienced phenomenal growth, more than doubling its population since 1996 to over 162,000 residents. To keep up with the recreational needs and interests of its residents, the City retained Opsis Architecture and The Sports Management Group to develop a citywide master plan for indoor recreation facilities.

The Sports Management Group took a broad view of City facilities and services and analyzed the resources for delivering recreational services. The result of this strategic planning effort: the 2007 Athletic Business Facility of Merit award winning Firstenburg Community Center featuring a two court gym, fitness center, wood floor studio, indoor track, climbing wall, activity pool, community room with kitchen, multi-purpose activity room, multi-purpose classroom, arts and crafts room, special events room, senior lounge, youth center and a sprayground. The renovation and expansion of the existing Marshall Luepke Community Center had been completed and planning is underway for the second phase of the Firstenburg Center, the addition of a 6-lane lap pool and crafts room. A library wing is currently under construction.

“The Sports Management Group was instrumental in not only the development of the functions and programming of spaces, but in the revenue and expense forecasting as well. We relied heavily on their experience and expertise throughout our planning process. When I called with a question, I got answers. They are very responsive.“

Christine SansomDirector, Parks and Recreation

The City of Mill Valley, situated just north of San Francisco, enjoys the benefits of Bay Area living while maintaining its historic small town appeal. Beginning in 1989, The Sports Management Group and Mill Valley partnered to create a center that would reflect the ideals and goals of the community. The City’s vision was realized in April 2001,when the Community Center opened its doors to the public. After their fifth year of operation Mill Valley asked The Sports Management Group to analyze their current fee structure and recommend changes to address rising operating costs.

The Sports Management Group developed the space program, fee structure, revenue and expense budgets, staffing requirements, and a policy and procedure manual for the Center. In addition, The Sports Management Group worked with staff on start-up planning to ensure operational efficiency. The facility, which received a 2002 Facility of Merit Award from Athletic Business Magazine, has realized its goal of over 100% cost recovery in its first year of operation.

In the mid 1990’s, the Southwest Community Center was among the first building projects the Portland Parks and Recreation Department had undertaken in 40 years. Thus, it set high goals for the Center’s performance and design excellence.

The Sports Management Group worked with City staff and a citizen’s planning committee to provide the City of Portland with an understanding of the need and requirements for a new community recreation center. The Sports Management Group facilitated planning meetings and public workshops to develop several building options that would meet the project budget. Cost and revenues were developed for each option. The Sports Management Group led the committee through an evaluation of each option’s success in meeting the community’s needs and expectations. The Sports Management Group assisted the design team with site selection and provided design review.

Travelers flock to Santa Fe and its beautiful environs, but the new Genoveva Chavez Community Center was not designed with tourists in mind. Opened in January 2000, the extensive new facility offers area residents a gathering place built especially for them. From a running track with views toward the mountains to an ice rink with spectator seating, the Center provides a comprehensive array of recreational activities unlike anything in the region. Distinguished at the outset as the largest municipal recreational facility in New Mexico, the new Center broadens the year-round recreational options. It brings indoor ice to the region and makes a big splash with its 50 meter pool and other water amenities.

The Sports Management Group assisted with programming, operational planning and budgets, fee structure, policies and procedures manual, operating forms, and maintenance manuals. The scope of services included equipment specifications and refinement of the design to meet the needs of the community.

When Salt Lake County decided to develop five new recreational facilities they set the bar high. Not content with continuing in a more traditional style, the County wanted to be a hot spot on the national map of state-of-the-art recreational facilities. For the small city of Magna, west of Salt Lake City, this goal translated into the stunning Magna Recreation Center, which opened in May 2000.

The staff and citizen committee had identified the core components for the center and needed assistance to move beyond the traditional model of recreation to a more dynamic center that offers a wider range of activities to broaden its appeal to the entire community. The Sports Management Group guided the committee through this programming and planning process. In subsequent workshops with Parks and Recreation Staff and citizen committee representatives, community needs were identified and a detailed architectural program outlined. The architects created a distinctive, contemporary design that integrates seamlessly with the adjacent park and aquatics center. The resulting recreation complex is a first-rate attraction for Magna citizens and visitors wanting to see a vision become reality.

Winner of the Gold Nugget Award for Best Recreational Facility and Nominated for the 2000 Athletic Business Facilities of Merit Award, The Sports Management Group served as programming and operational consultant for this unique and innovative facility.

The Sports Management Group was given the opportunity to address very diverse programming needs ranging from senior citizens to teen uses. Stepping up to the challenge, we succeeded in programming and planning this 44,400sf, $6.8 million Center for the City of Anaheim. Located in the City’s redevelopment area, the facility consists of two separate buildings, a 26,670sf Senior Center/Community Center and a 14,730sf gymnasium with a boxing club.

The project’s overall master plan was based on the city’s history and incorporates the original city grid, the Santa Ana River and some of the early landmark buildings of this German town once called Campo Aleman.

“The Sports Management Group helped us put things together. As we got into it, it was a group activity of making decisions - a democratic process. We did some ripping and trimming here and there, but we were pretty well able to get everything in the original program.”

When a project’s scope is grander than what the budget allows at the onset, tough choices must be made. The Sports Management Group faced this scenario when developing the architectural program for Salt Lake County’s new Recreation Center situated in a park setting in the town of Sandy. As design consultant to VCBO Architects, The Sports Management Group conducted three day-long intensive workshops with County Parks and Recreation Staff and municipal representatives. Guided through a process of envisioning and decision making, workshop participants defined their wish list, discussed alternatives, and came to consensus about features to include, eliminate, or postpone.

The Sports Management Group helped them realize what was feasible to build and operate within the existing budget, established size and performance requirements for each room, and produced finishing touches on a detailed architectural program. A conceptual layout and schematic design for the building were prepared, and some future wishes were incorporated as part of the site requirements for the master plan.

Taking predictions for more leisure time in the 21st century to heart, the City of Dublin prepared for the new millennium with their sensational Community Creation Center, which opened in July 1996. The first phase created a striking facility with competitive and leisure pools, gymnasium, fitness atrium, aerobics studio, community spaces, and more. A second phase, completed in 1999 for a cost of $4.5 million, added a 200 seat black box theater, community hall, arts and crafts rooms, and expanded senior center. The resulting center enhanced the quality of life for Dublin citizens.

The Sports Management Group performed needs assessment and cost recovery analysis, developed a detailed architectural program, and served as Design Architect for this award winning building. The Sports Management Group also developed operating budgets, staffing requirements, equipment specifications, and worked with Staff to design marketing strategies and tools, including policies and procedures, and create management forms.

Thanks to a joint venture between the City of Walnut Creek and the Jewish Community Center, City residents and members of the JCC can now enjoy shared use of this state-of-the-art recreational facility.

The project began when the Jewish Community Center gave Walnut Creek a 99-year lease on an awkward piece of property wedged between Tice Valley Community Park and the JCC facility. The City paid for the construction of the gymnasium. “We were challenged by the project,” said architect Eric Glass. “We gave the building a strong identity and presence using an L-shape design and a covered colonnade that thrusts out toward the street.” Thanks to the cooperation and creativity of everyone involved, the Tice Valley Gymnasium, dedicated in May 1998, is a big success.

The Sports Management Group, in charge of financial feasibility and programming, assessed needs, reviewed designs, and made recommendations for room sizes, materials, and equipment. The Sports Management Group facilitated programming workshops with City recreation staff, JCC staff, and the design team, including Design Architects Glass Architects and Architects of Record RDS & Associates.

The initial goal of the City of Clayton and the Clayton School District was to develop facilities needed by both. As the planning progressed, a broader vision was established: “build community by bringing various generations together to enjoy educational, cultural, recreational health benefits for the common good of all”. By pooling resources and forging a partnership this vision has been realized.

The Sports Management Group assessed the recreational needs of the community and the school district and worked with the various stakeholders to identify facility components to meet those needs. Developing the facility on school property presented many operational challenges that had to be solved in space planning performed by The Sports Management Group. To establish the financial impact of operating the facility a cost analysis was conducted. To ensure the School District and the City could successfully coexist in the new facility, The Sports Management Group developed a joint use agreement that established use and operational expectations and financial terms.

In the family oriented community of Vandalia, situated just 15 miles from Dayton, residents and City officials identified a need for a multi-faceted recreation and fitness facility. The 57,900sf facility was completed in 2001 and now serves as a focal point in the community. It reflects the high quality of life in Vandalia by offering state-of-the-art components such as a 27-foot climbing wall - the largest free standing wall in the area - a leisure pool with play structures and waterslides, a gymnasium, indoor track, lap pool, and fitness equipment. For the youngest residents there is an indoor playground filled with climbing structures and play features. The completed Center lies in a 100-acre City park that is also home to a massive sports-field complex. The combination creates a welcoming place for all to enjoy recreational pursuits.

The Sports Management Group assisted the City of Vandalia with staffing, programming, budgets and fees for the Recreation Center.

At Highlands Ranch, a family-oriented community south of Denver, a motivated group of homeowners took on the challenge of creating a new recreational center. The Sports Management Group guided the volunteer Future Facilities Committee through a series of hands-on activities. The fun included “spending sprees” in which homeowners chose how to spend play dollars to buy programming and activity spaces for the new Center. They played with the site plans and manipulated scaled building sections to more clearly visualize the possibilities for construction. The challenge included positioning the building on a difficult L-shaped 10-acre site and developing a facility that would complement the existing recreation center at Northridge while serving the needs of the entire community.

The Sports Management Group developed cost estimates and operating cost projections, prepared information to support a public vote regarding funding, and served as Sports Facility Design Consultant to the architect of record, Sink Combs Dethlefs. The design features a naturally lit central rotunda/lobby that provides access and views to all activity areas resulting in a facility that is an inviting recreational, educational, and social gathering place for all residents.

The community of Woodland is a museum of historic homes and architectural history. The City is also home to the Ag Museum and Antique Truck Museum—130,000 sf of interactive exhibits. The charm and the Central Valley location have contributed to tremendous population growth over the past 15 years. To ensure that Woodland continues to be a great place to live, the City began an ambitious plan to develop a community center. The result is the 52,000 sf Woodland Community & Senior Center located in a new 40-acre park.

The Sports Management Group was retained by Woodland to conduct a feasibility study including a public outreach process to identify community needs. The public outreach process identified the desire for a very large social gathering space. However, the economic realities prevented the construction of such a large dedicated space and dictated that the facility be flexible to accommodate multiple activities and programs. The solution was a large banquet room located adjacent to the gymnasium with a shared atrium and kitchen. When combined with the gymnasium the joined rooms provide over 17,000 sf of gathering space.

When Middleburg Heights assembled a team of architects and consultants to plan the largest and most expensive building in the City’s history, they called on The Sports Management Group as Programming and Design Consultants. The facility anchors the west end of the municipal campus in this Cleveland suburb of 14,000 with a business-based day population of 40,000. The Sports Management Group assisted the design team with detailed layouts of all recreation and community areas so that the design reflected the program intent.

“This Center is not just sports, but a family-oriented, social gathering place,” commented Recreation Director Carl Guarnieri. He continued, “The facility is complex, with lots of detail, and is unique in that our community has never had a history of swimming and a third of it is water, with a water feature in the lobby. Working with The Sports Management Group gave us confidence that we could build this center and effectively operate it. They became an integral part of the team early in the process and their expertise in the layout, design, and development of community recreation facilities along with the extensive information they provided in staffing, programming, and cost and income analysis proved to be vital in making us feel comfortable that our goal would be reached — within budget and on time. Their follow-up has been excellent.”

For the citizens of this beautiful mountain community, fitness is a way of life. The surrounding mountains offer some of the best hiking, biking and climbing in the world. It is no surprise that the demand for outstanding recreation facilities is a high priority for the citizens of Durango.

In the spring of 1998, The Sports Management Group was asked to study the feasibility and citizens’ willingness to support the funding and construction of a state-of–the-art community recreation center. The Sports Management Group guided the citizen steering committee and parks and recreation staff through a process that gave them the tools to make sound decisions and lay the groundwork for a successful election approving a 1/2-cent sales/use tax.

Even after the facilities grand opening in January 2002, City staff continues to rely on the cost and revenue projections developed in the original study, which have proven accurate and a useful tool as they plan for their future operation.

The Centennial Recreation Center is truly multi-generational providing toddlers with a child activity room, a game room and lounge for youth to gather, and a dedicated wing for seniors’ programs and services. The wood floor studio, gymnasium, fitness center and leisure/lap pools have appeal across generational lines.

Before the development of these new facilities the city relied heavily on non-profit organizations to provide services and programs. The recreation staff, while very capable, is limited. The Sports Management Group worked as a ready extension of the staff throughout the development of Centennial Recreation Center, on the City’s well loved Aquatic Center, as well as the Community Performing Arts Center. The Sports Management Group performed a market analysis; developed policy and procedure manuals, equipment lists, and operating and revenue budgets; in addition to performing design review to maximize the operational efficiency of the City’s new facilities.

“The Sports Management Group’s expertise and attention to detail has been invaluable to us on each of our projects. Their client customer service has exceeded the staff’s expectations. They are always accessible by phone and responsive to inquiries, no matter how last minute. With three large capital projects and a very limited City staff, it has been essential to have The Sports Management Group available for assistance.“

The construction of a new library in Milpitas created the opportunity to repurpose the old library building. The staff had the perfect use—transform the old building into a “new-generation” center for adults. The city’s large and culturally diverse senior population had outgrown their existing center and the lack of space limited programming and services that could be offered. To understand the diverse interests and needs, an extensive public outreach was conducted in several languages.

The outreach identified the need for a wide range of spaces including active space-- wood floor studio, large fitness room with cardiovascular equipment, and game room for competitive ping-pong. The community hearth, dining room, café, and lounge will provide space for social connection while classrooms and a technology room will provide space for enrichment. A service center will provide space for social services. Additionally, the facility will take advantage of its setting in a civic park with beautiful outdoor spaces, and the adjacent community center provides additional space to extend programming.

The renovation and expansion construction began in April 2009 with a grand opening targeted for Summer of 2010.
