F irstenburg Community Center is a multi-

use facility that combines recreational

and community spaces with public

services. Firstenburg opened with a $21.1

million budget for design and construction;

funded with Real Estate Excise Tax (REET), $3

million charitable fund through the Community

Foundation of Southwest Washington (in the

name of Ed and Mary Firstenburg), and

$500,000 through an economic development

grant from Washington State.

The local Hewlett Packard (HP) branch office

adopted the Firstenburg campus in 2016. Staff

members from HP organize and schedule

volunteer events throughout the year and

provide a number of valuable services including

laying mulch, picking up litter, planting trees,

and removing invasive plants and weeds.

Vancouver Parks and Recreation runs a Fifty

and Better Program that provides free and low-

cost programs for community members ages 50

and older. The Trapedero II Lounge at

Firstenburg is home to several clubs and

activities for seniors. In addition, senior fitness

classes are hosted on a regular basis in the

community room.

Teens can likewise take advantage of several

free and low-cost opportunities. Local students,

ages 11-18, can participate in afterschool

programs such as open gym, teen fitness hours,

and Teen Late Night on weekdays during the

school year.

Middle and high school students in both

Vancouver and Evergreen Public Schools can

get free membership through the Apple Pass

Program.
