Invite your friends, neighbors and co-workers to church with you to the Fall Kick-Off as we celebrate a new year at First UMC! There will be plenty of food, fun and festivities!

Bring your 2016 Church Directory for a community book signing event! If you haven’t picked up your copy yet, they will be available at the Hospitality Table.

Fall Kick-Off: Sunday September 11 11 a.m. in the First UMC Courtyard

What equips us, as people of faith, to persevere in, to witness to, to maintain hope…in a time such as this? The headlines won’t let up—racial tension, war, terrorism, climate change, refugees, earthquakes, floods, fires….God’s people and God’s creation are hurting, badly.

This is mostly not new news. And it’s precisely why God sent Jesus to “pitch his tent among us” as one translation puts it. And it’s precisely why God created the church. The church—the community of faithful disciples who bear witness, who point to truth, who embody hope, who serve the least of the least, who

persevere in prayer, who give generously, who are known by their love of one another and of all God’s children, who defend the creation, who seek the paths of peace and justice.

I’m eager to Kick-Off this new year with all of you. Our worship theme for Sunday mornings is DISCIPLe. Across the Sundays of the Fall we’ll look at all the ways we strive to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. What does it mean to be his student, his witness, his servant, his advocate, his follower, his apprentice, his spokesperson, his ambassador, and his friend? What does it mean to live as his disciple?

I invite you into this journey of faith, generosity, and service. And while you’re at it—bring a friend!

This ministry continues to show tremendous potential in reaching new folks who long for a spiritual community. The Labyrinth laid in the Simkins Hall floor of First United Methodist Church is a replica of the Chartres Labyrinth laid in the cathedral around 1220 CE. Walking the labyrinth is an ancient spiritual practice, a way to quiet our minds and open our spirits to the presence of the Holy. Every step a prayer.

Classes are underway at First UMC Preschool, and we’re excited for the new school year!

When you walk into the school entrance you immediately see the results of the continuation of the beautification project – brand new furniture in Room 102 and air conditioners in the classrooms! The curriculum is based on play and exploration – children here gain knowledge in math and science, cognitive abilities, language and literacy, dramatic play and, most importantly, social skills. Extra-curricular activities include a variety of enrichment classes in different sessions throughout the school year, including music, art and a unique Mandarin Immersion Program. This year we continue to offer the Parent & Toddler Class series led by Terri

Emberling, who brings over 16 years of experience to the program that is designed with both the child and parent in mind.

We’re also excited to have both Rev. Robert English and Tricia Lindley start this Fall with co-leading the preschoolers in the Chapel every week. The children join in songs, stories and prayers appropriate for their age.

We look forward to another fun year of learning and growing at First UMC Preschool!

Our Sanctuary: Symbols of Hopeby Ron Theile“As a member of this congregation and of the Chancel Choir, I often find myself gazing upon our beautiful sanctuary. There are times I look out from the choir loft to witness those who are worshipping doing the same. It could be while we are preparing for worship, praying, listening to scripture or being moved by the music of worship.

This series will help to guide us as we look at, and think about, the many sights and symbols that surround us as we worship. They are all symbols of hope, so that we will all be inspired to be the hope.” - Ron Theile

Part 7: For this month’s installment, I had thoughts of grouping the 11th Street windows into one month. This, I thought, would be saving time. It was a great plan until I walked into the Narthex (from the outside), turned right, and went up to the first landing and the first window. My plan faded away when I viewed, what most call, “The History Window.”

There, before me, was approximately 12 feet of stained glass with images of the most dynamic figures in Methodism throughout our history. From top to bottom, they are: John Wesley, Philip Embury, Francis Ashbury and Susanna Wesley.

John Wesley (June 17, 1703 – March 2, 1791) was a theologian who, with his brother, Charles, and fellow cleric George Whitfield, is credited with the foundation of Methodism. We are aware of his importance of the founding of Methodism in America.

Philip Embury (1728-1775) was converted after a religious experience on Christmas Day, 1752. Embury was soon recognized as a potential leader and was licensed as a local preacher. He emigrated to America where, in 1766, he began to preach. He led the first Methodist society in New York City. In 1770 he organized the first Methodist society north of New York City and continued until his death to preach and to act as the civil magistrate.

Francis Ashbury (August 20, 1745 – March 31, 1816) was one of the first two Bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. As a young man in October 1771, the Englishman traveled to America and, during his 45 years here, devoted his life to ministry. He travelled on horseback and carriage thousands of miles to deliver The Word to those living on the frontier.

Susanna Wesley (January 20,1669- July 23, 1742) was the mother of John and Charles Wesley. It is written that, “Intense, charismatic, indomitable, John Wesley lived according to rules established by the only woman living in his time who may have been his equal—Susanna Wesley, his mother.” She bore between seventeen and nineteen children; ten survived. Throughout her years, she endured the death of seven to nine of her children, her home twice destroyed by fire, and yet she never lost her faith or trust in God.

These founders of Methodism serve as a reminder that we must persevere if we are to continue to make disciples for Jesus Christ. However, I must admit, Susanna Wesley’s story struck a chord in me. She is truly an example for all of us to follow. I encourage you to read and absorb the story of her life. This woman lived her life with a constant hope that, through faith in God and the love of Jesus Christ, she could survive all of life’s challenges.

All four of these images of this window are symbols of hope, so that we can be the hope.

Health Ministry Council News by Dorothy Williams and Debi Jenkinson WongHealth Ministry Council Co-ChairsThis fall is the perfect time for us to tie up loose ends before we get involved in another busy year at First UMC so we have two important updates from the Health Ministry Council! The CDs from the Elderly and their Children presentations last winter are available without cost at the Hospitality Table during Coffee Hours! Copies of the handouts/information used at each session are also available and a copy of all of these items will remain on file in the Health Ministry Council resource notebook in the church office. Thanks for your patience with this process; we hope you enjoy these resources as much as we enjoyed working together with you to present this valuable information.

In addition, we have learned from the Public Health Department that a diluted bleach solution is recommended for wiping down surfaces in the kitchens of large facilities like First UMC, so the staff will be changing from a dilute vinegar solution to the bleach solution which will be clearly labeled and placed near the sink in the First UMC kitchens. As we are currently programming for this year, in addition to the Flu Clinic in October and a Blood Drive in April, and monthly blood pressure readings, we are working on presentations that reflect our current health concerns here at First UMC; please contact us or one of our HMC members if you have ideas for us to consider. Thanks for your support and enthusiasm for our Councils efforts. See you in church!

Vacation Bible School Report by Tricia Lindley, Director of Children and Youth Ministry

VBS 2016 Surf Shack: Catch the Wave of God’s Amazing Love was an overall success! A total of 52 children and over 30 volunteers participated this year. Everyone had a wonderful time catching the wave of God’s Amazing Love with Snappy the Crab through song and dance, story, science, games and crafts. Each day we focused on a wave word: God Creates - God Helps - God Loves - God Calms - God Sends. All of these allowed us to explore God’s Love and how we can catch the wave of that Love and share it with others. We also celebrate that our children, in loving action, learned about The Jared Box Project during the week and collected enough supplies for more than 10 boxes that will be shared with children in the hospital. Thank you to the many youth and adults who helped make it possible! If you have an interest in volunteering for VBS next year, email Tricia Lindley: [email protected].

Welcome, Jack McHugh! We are incredibly excited to introduce our youth families to Jack McHugh, who will be joining our UMYF Sunday evenings this fall and getting to know our youth, with the intention of building a youth music program in the coming months. Our youth counselors are working with Jack and we are excited to have him join our leadership team. He will be at our UMYF Kick-Off on September 11 and we will have the opportunity to welcome him to our community, hear more about his role, receive input from parents and continue moving forward towards the vision of a vibrant and faith-filled music ministry for our youth!

Jack is originally from Randolph, New Jersey. Beginning his musical career with piano, he later added trumpet and vocal studies before moving to Chicago to pursue a Bachelor’s in Music Education at Northwestern. After graduation, Jack taught music in Shanghai to students from 2 -12th grade, before settling down in Los Angeles a year later. When not musically engaged, Jack can be found relaxing on the beach, skiing, hiking or biking. He now teaches at Carlthorp Elementary in Santa Monica, and is excited to join the music ministries in First UMC.
