In Toronto alone, the calendar month is full of community events highlighted by the 121st celebration of Philippine Independence and tributes to our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.

This month of June is, indeed, extra special. The overall feel-ing is that of winning.

Canada is celebrating the first-ever Filipino Heritage Month after motion 155, lobbied by Scarborough Centre MP Salma Zahid, was passed unani-mously in the House of Com-mons, This is a big win for Filipino-Canadians. The many contributions of Filipinos, who chose Canada to be their home-away-from-home, are finally recognized and ap-plauded.

There are reasons why June was chosen to be the Filipino Heritage Month in Canada. It is on this month that we cele-brate the independence our forefathers fought for and won for us on June 12, 1898. Many annual independence

Canada is caring for its caregivers by launching 2 new pilots that will help caregivers who come to this country make it their permanent home. The Home Child Care Pro-vider and Home Support Worker pilots will open for applications on June 18, 2019, replacing the expir-ing Caring for Children and Caring for People with High Medical Needs pilots. Effective June 18, 2019, applications for the Home Child Care Provider and Home Support Worker pi-lots will be processed re-placing the Caring for Chil-dren and Caring for People with High Medical Needs programs. Caregivers will now only receive a work permit if they have a job offer in Canada and meet standard criteria for economic immi-gration programs. Once

working in Canada, care-givers will be able to begin gaining the required 2 years of Canadian work

experience to apply for permanent residence. Through these new pilots, caregivers will also benefit from:

· occupation-specific work permits, rather than employer-specific, to allow for a fast change of employers when nec-essary; · open work permits and/or study permits for the caregivers’ immedi-ate family, to help fami-lies come to Canada to-gether; and · a clear transition from temporary to permanent status, to ensure that once caregivers have met the work experience re-quirement, they will be able to become perma-nent residents quickly.

These new pilots provide caregivers from abroad and their families with a clear, direct pathway to perma-nent residence. Canada is committed to improving life for immi-grants and supporting jobs for the middle class.

“Canada is caring for our caregivers. We made a commitment to improve the lives of caregivers and their families who come from around the world to care for our loved ones and with these new pilots, we are doing exactly that.”

– The Honourable Ahmed Hussen,

Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

CANADA ~ PHILIPPINE NEWS WAVES

Highlights

• The expiring pilots will close to new applications on June 18, 2019. Caregivers who have applied before this date will continue to have their applications processed through to a final decision.

• Caregivers who have been working toward applying to the soon-to-be-expired pi-lots can now apply through either the Home Child Care Provider Pilot or the Home Support Worker Pilot.

• The Interim Pathway for Caregivers, the short-term pathway for caregivers who came to Canada as temporary foreign workers since 2014 but were unable to qualify for permanent residence through an existing program, will be extended. It will re-open on July 8, 2019 and accept applications for 3 months.

• The new pilots, Home Child Care Provider and Home Support Worker, will each have a maximum of 2,750 principal applicants, for a total of 5,500 principal applicants per year, plus their immediate family.

• Initial applications to the new pilots will have a 12-month processing service stand-ard. A 6-month processing standard will apply for finalizing an application after the caregiver submits proof that they have met the work experience requirement.

• With the move to occupation-specific work permits under the Home Child Care and Home Support Worker pilots, employers will no longer need a Labour Market Im-pact Assessment before hiring a caregiver from overseas.

Prime Minister Trudeau’s way of celebrating Filipino Heritage Month

It’s Filipino Heritage month so our down-to-earth Prime Minister surprised the owner and customers of FV Foods . According to Scarborough Centre MP Salma Zahid, Justin wanted to try authentic Filipino food so she brought him to FV Foods in Scarborough.

There was no fanfare. Trudeau simply tried servings of Filipino delicacies. But he did more than that. He mingled and had fun conversations with the customers.

The prime minister was also in Toronto for the big Raptor celebration at Nathan Phillips Square held on June 17. Raptor fans cheered Justin Trudeau as he took the stage at Nathan Philips Square during the championship parade rally. The crowd that filled up the square and beyond was estimated at 2 million people. This is the first time the NBA championship trophy was won by a team outside of the United States.

“What we saw here was the country coming together and that’s what we celebrate,” he said.

The Raptors have been invited to visit Prime Minister Tru-deau in Ottawa. Coach Nick Nurse is working out a date for the visit.

It is celebration after celebration in Toronto. Our Prime Minister showed up at Toronto’s 2019 Pride parade. Spot-ted walking with him is Mayor of Toronto John Tory along-side MPs Shaun Chen, Marco Mendicino, and Gary Anan-dasangaree. PHOTO @Shaun Chen

population, according to the 2016 census. Excepting White (22.1 per-cent, or 72,250), I am not aware if the top three in the rung - Chinese, 45.1 percent, or 147,725; South Asian, 17.8 percent or 58,270, and Black, 2.9 per-cent, or 9,655; and down the line, including West Asian, Arab, Korean, South-east Asian - have such sig-nificant presence as the Filipinos' Rizal, except for the ubiquitous Chinese res-taurants and shopping malls. Rizal's full-size bronze stat-ue, sculpted by Mogi Moga-do, the "artist with a cause" and journalist who hap-pens to be a long-time Markham resident, is tout-ed to be the first in Canada of such a grand scale - 6 feet 3 inches tall compared to Rizal's height of 5 feet three inches. The only other monument of Rizal within the Greater Toronto Area is a bust rep-lica at Earl Bales Park in North York, which was a gift from the Philippine government erected there in 1998 in commemoration of the centennial of Philip-pine independence. The bust made of cold cast bronze measures 2.6 ft.x 2 ft x1 ft. and mounted on a

6.6 feet granite pedestal. The park's central location and accessibility to public transport made it a good choice as it's also a favour-ite site for picnics and Fili-pino community events. So that for the last 20 years, the community of Rizal be-lievers marks Rizal's birth (June 19, 1861) and death (December 30, 1896) there with all the fanfare it can muster. If transportation will not be an issue (it is for me), the monument in Markham should be the centerpiece of any Rizal day celebration in the GTA. The image con-veyed by the full-size stat-ue is more uplifting for Fili-pinos and to public percep-tion in general than what the bust exudes. Mogi Mogado did an exem-plary job sculpting the stat-ue, in fact, succeeding where the bust fails in em-bodying the ideals and as-pirations of a people that his Rizal represents in car-rying the still-relevant nov-el Noli Me Tangere, a clas-sic depiction of Spanish abuses of the time. The monument in Manila, which is also a mausoleum (the remains of Rizal are entombed there), stands out for its grandeur. The exact same thing is repli-cated in Madrid, Spain. Mogado's rendition cap-tures the simplicity and magnificence even without the obelisk.

There's no doubt Markham's Filipino com-munity will accord the same reverence as their Toronto counterparts. But I'm saying that the high point of Filipino celebra-tions should be where peo-ple could envision us as living creatures and not as an ancient representation of parts of a body. Mogado's monument comes alive not just for its full size, actually taller by one feet, but because it is so expressive of the new generation of Filipinos past the era of the boomers. I believe that is what Moga-do is trying to say. Not to be forgotten in cre-ating this landmark is the couple Alex Chiu (retired Markham councillor) and Alicia Chiu. A press release said Mr. Chiu "fathered and fundraised for the project" while Mrs. Chiu "conceived the Luneta Gardens plan and chaired the Rizal pro-ject". Of course, without the full support of the City of Mark-ham, Mayor Frank Scar-pitti, and the Markham Fili-pino Canadian Community, Mogado's Rizal would not have come to fruition. Rizal's monument is as much a monument to all the people who helped build it as it is to Mogi Mogado, the sculptor, art-ist, and journalist. But if truth be told, the structure is intrinsically a monument to all Filipinos in Canada! ∎

Eduardo Verchez Garcí a, known professionally as Eddie Garcia or Manoy Ed-die, is a Filipino actor, tele-vision personality, film di-rector and producer. With over 600 film and televi-sion roles and a career spanning seven-decades, Garcia is widely regarded as the "greatest Filipino actor of all-time". Garcí a started acting in the movie Siete Infantes de La-ra in 1949. He directed his first movie Karugtong ng Kahapon in 1961.Garcí a is best known for portraying villain roles. He is also known for his trademark humorous lines mostly in action films or comedy films. As of 2019, he has appeared in approximately 600 movies and TV shows. Garcia's most notable film is an independent venture titled "Bwakaw", directed by Jun Robles Lana, a young Palanca award win-ner and director, gave Ed-die Garcia the script, and was worried that a big star like Eddie would decline the role as the crew feared they cannot afford him. The director admitted his con-cern to Eddie, who already read the script. To the di-rector’s surprise, Eddie nonchalantly said, “So

when do we start shoot-ing?” In 2005, he played the lead role (a senior citizen com-ing to terms with his mor-tality) in Rica Arevalo’s “ICU Bed #7”—an entry in the first Cinemalaya Philip-pine Independent Film Fes-tival—for which he won best actor. Garcí a is the most awarded and nominated person in the long history of the Fili-pino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards. He garnered a to-tal of 34 nominations (13 for Best Supporting Actor, 10 for Best Actor and 11 for Best Director). Out of these, he got 6 Best Supporting Actor wins, 5 Best Actor wins and 5 Best Director wins, 3 Hall of Fame Awards, 1 Lifetime Achievement Award and the Fernando Poe, Jr. Me-morial Award. He was awarded his first FAMAS Award in 1957 and his last FAMAS, a Hall of Fame for Best Actor, in 2003. He is the only performer in Phil-ippine movie history to win three consecutive FAMAS Awards: Best Supporting Actor awards for Taga sa Bato (1957), Condenado (1958) and Tanikalang Apoy (1959).Garcí a is also

Filipino rum brand, Tan-duay, successfully main-tained its stature as the world’s rum industry lead-er in the latest report of Drinks International.

Global spirits market think-tank Drinks International released in June its Ranking of the World’s Million-Case Spirits Brands for 2019

with Tanduay in the top spot for the second year in a row.

The 165-year old Filipino brand stayed on the list as the world’s number one in the rum category after out-performing 152 other brands. The survey includ-ed foreign brands such as Bacardi which stayed be-hind in the second spot.∎

121st Philippine Independence

Dubai's Burj Khalifa lit up with Philippine flag

MANILA (UPDATE) - The world's tallest sky-scraper on Wednesday night lit up with colors of the Philippine flag as the country celebrates its 121st independence from the Spanish rule.

A crowd of Filipinos erupted in cheers when Dubai's 160-storey Burj Khalifa was bathed in red, white and blue lights, accentuated by 3 stars and the sun.

Some overseas Filipi-no workers (OFWs) traveled to Dubai to witness the brief light show on the iconic tower.

"We are very happy... na maipakita rin sa ibang nationality how we are united and how we are patriotic to our country," Jenny Rivera said.

The Philippine Consulate General in Dubai and the Northern Emirates orga-nized the event.

Filipina worker Anne Gutierrez said the dis-play was a bit short but was "worth the wait."

A separate laser show was also held in Dubai Festival City Mall to mark Philippines' Inde-pendence Day.—ABS-CBN News

Vatican declares Pinoy teen ‘Servant of God,’ a step closer to sainthood MANILA—A Filipino teen who spent most of his life helping street children be-fore dying of an illness has been declared "Servant of God", a step closer to saint-hood.

Rome bestowed the title upon Darwin Ramos on March 29, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said Friday.

Following the declaration, the Cubao Diocesan Tribu-nal will begin initiating the process for beatifying and canonizing Ramos. “The Vatican has given us the go-signal to go deeper in his life, how he lived his faith and how he gave wit-ness to Jesus to whom he was very close,” Bishop Honesto Ongtioco of Cubao said in an article posted on the CBCP website.

According to the CBCP, Ra-mos spent his childhood in the slums of Pasay, where he scavenged the streets with his younger sister.

He was later diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, an illness caus-ing the degeneration and weakness of the muscles. He died on Sept. 23, 2012, at the age of 17.

In 2006, Ramos joined the Tulay ng Kabataan, a non-government organization focused on helping street children.

“Darwin is an example of holiness. Being a street

child, afflicted with myopa-thy, he is closely united with Christ in his suffering and joy,” Ongtioco said.

After becoming "Servant of God," the next step to saint-hood is becoming a "venerable" after the per-son's "heroic virtues" is recognized by the pontiff.

A venerable will be ap-proved for beatification once a miracle is attributed to his or her intercession. With the pope's approval of a decree of a miracle, the person can now be beati-fied, earning him or her the title of "blessed."

A second miracle is needed before proceeding to can-onization, which would then lead to his or her offi-cial declaration as "saint." - ABS-CBN News

According to the CBCP, the Vati-can has approved further study-ing the life of Darwin Ramos, a Pasay-raised boy who purported-ly was "very close" to Jesus Christ until his death in 2012. Ramos was declared "Servant of God" in March, a step closer to sainthood.

To all fathers: ‘BE NOT AFRAID’ By Deacon Paul Quinn

Happy Father’s Day to all who fulfill the role of being a dad! Whether a biologi-cal, adoptive, foster or fa-ther figure to a child, you are due a well-deserved round of applause for your hard work and dedication to your children.

I was blessed to have a phenomenal father who did everything possible to pro-vide a better life for his family. He taught me the value of hard work, dedica-tion and self-giving love for God, family and country — values I have tried to pass on to my own children.

When my wife and I tried to start a family, I realized how many children grow up without someone to call

dad. Through Catholic So-cial Services, we became both a foster and adoptive family, and over the past 30 years, we have been privi-leged to adopt six wonder-ful children and be foster parents to over 30 more.

Often children placed in foster care have never ex-

perienced the positive presence of a man in their lives and can be fearful of the “giant” now with them. Over time, with gentleness and compassion, they grow to learn what it means to call someone “Daddy.” I’ve learned that what my chil-dren need most is to know that they are loved, that they are God’s greatest gift to us!

So, what does it take to be a father? Consider the simple yet powerful words spoken by an angel to St. Joseph: “Do not be afraid.” St. Jo-seph listened and trusted, and took Mary into his home. St. John Paul II called St. Joseph a model of man-hood with the title

Filipinos Making WAV ES Lifestyle

The More Time You Spend With Your Mother, The Longer She Will Live

Ransi Samarasinghe

Mothers have been thought to be endless wellsprings of genuine love and care since the time immemorial. We’ve seen them battle for us, weep for us, be glad for us and it has at times been troublesome with us.

In any case, we hate the possibility of our moms leaving from us. Do you fre-quently wake up from a bad dream and require your mom? Or then again amaze her with spontaneous house visits? At that point, do that increasingly, in light of the fact that, as indicated by an examination, it causes them live more!

Depression assumes a de-terminant part in the defeat which is connected to sen-iority, as indicated by the examination that was led by the analysts at the Universi-ty of California, San Francis-co.

As per a report posted by Elle, 1600 grown-ups with a normal age of 71 took part in the investigation. Finan-cial status, and additionally wellbeing, were the con-trolled variables. The for-lorn people, in any case, had higher death rates. Very nearly 23 percent of the members passed on in-side six years, when con-trasted with the 14 percent of the individuals who an-nounced having sufficient camaraderie.

At the point when individu-als become more estab-lished, a large number of their connections travel every which way. Tragical-ly, even the enduring ones begin to shrink away with the death of age. The gen-eral population they’ve shared a lot of their oppor-tunity with won’t not be

around to mind them.

Kids regularly allow their folks to sit unbothered when their age turns into a weight to them. Little does anybody envision that our old people will leave so far that one won’t not get an opportunity to state fare-well.

The comprehension of the dangers of separation and an underpopulated, disen-gaged life can be slippery for some reasons. For in-stance, if nobody is tending to the person’s day by day needs — sustenance, drug, therapeutic arrangements,” Ms. Moscowitz clarifies. “The fridge is unfilled, how-ever there’s nobody to call. Individuals endure give up, mortification.”

Social disengagement and forlornness can take a seri-ous toll on more seasoned individuals, mentally and physically. (More than 75, very nearly a fourth of men and almost 46% of ladies live alone, the Census Bu-reau reports.)

“The need we’ve had our whole lives — individuals who know us, esteem us, who bring us satisfaction — that never leaves,” Barbara Moscowitz, a Senior geriat-ric social laborer at Massa-chusetts General Hospital revealed to The New York Times.

Forlornness brings its per-ils; contemplates have ex-hibited that depression has connections with higher circulatory strain, nursing home affirmations, danger-ous wellbeing practices, for example, idleness and smoking, and with demen-tia.

The senior people consider bonds considerably more

genuinely than their young-sters or grandkids do; in this way pardoning comes rapidly to them. Rosemary Blieszner, a teacher of hu-man improvement at Vir-ginia Tech says that it comes down to the funda-mental social abilities and that the aptitudes our grandparents have been sharpened over a lifetime.

Because of these aptitudes, their companionships are much steady and tolerating of the eccentricities and defects that their compan-ions have. “You convey sig-nificantly more experience to your companionships when you’re more sea-soned. You realize what merits quarrelling over and not worth quarrelling over.” Rosemary states.

Other than the more sea-soned relatives and com-panions that are welcomed home, its important to ad-vance connections of their level. Regularly the helped living situations are mis-judged. In any case, this far reaching conviction is lost. The more established peo-ple have a tendency to flourish in living circum-stances where they can in-terface and blend with dif-ferent individuals of their age. At the point when the nature of their opportunity expands, their life span turns out to be more con-crete.

Your Grandma and Grandpa can profit essentially on the off chance that you invest energy, that is, quality time with them all the time. That being stated, it causes the youthful to gain from their encounters as well. The col-laborations they hold with their family gives them the significant brotherhood and articulation which is basic for life at that stage.

Don’t we return to mystery formulas shared by our grandmas? Or on the other hand some executioner chess move that your granddad indicated you? In spite of the fact that a siza-ble number of youthful ones and grown-ups don’t have grandparents or guardians, one can simply go to helped living homes or comparable associations and interface with the el-derly there. You may strike a companionship consider-ably quicker than you might suspect.

The way we organize fel-lowships may develop. Laura Carstensen, a Stan-ford University clinician, built up a powerful hypoth-esis called “socioemotional selectivity”: As individuals sense their residual time developing brief, they shed shallow connections to fo-cus on those they find gen-erally important.

The investigation sets up a thorough base of cases to help their discoveries – fel-lowship does and factually helps spare lives and broaden solid lives further.

This can turn out to be a superb open door for social specialist and analysts to give careful consideration to the focal part of compan-ionship in such issues. Ac-tion chiefs, senior focus staff individuals, and family parental figures can profit by the part of kinships; dis-cover better approaches to enable the older folks to keep in contact with each other or make new ones. “Guardian of the Redeemer” as the foster or adoptive father of Jesus.

Little is known of him: He was the protector of Jesus and Mary, he observed the Jewish faith traditions, he was a craftsman who pro-vided for his family, and Jesus was obedient to him. St. Joseph is a role model for all fathers, calling us to be present to our children, and to encourage and guide them through the journey of life.

Being a dad is not easy; it’s a tremendous responsibility that requires discipline and patience. Life moves so quickly and along the way personal tragedies can hap-pen.

The real test of fatherhood is always being there for your children, standing by them in times of uncertain-ty. Good fathers pay atten-tion to their children’s needs and interests, sup-port and encourage them, and serve as a good role model for them.

With all the challenges of being a good father, I can attest that the rewards are

endless. Seeing your chil-dren take their first steps, removing the training wheels off the bike, watch-ing them sing their hearts out in school concerts or play sports or learn to drive a car — these are but a few of the experiences that bring laughter to your life and joy to your heart.

Time goes all too fast — one minute you’re holding a ba-by bottle and the next you’re walking them down the aisle.

Like St. Joseph, all fathers are called to be guardians of the children entrusted to their care. Listen to those same words he heard — “do not be afraid” — and accept the vocation of fa-therhood with great joy. Seek the intercession of St. Joseph today as you strive to fulfill the call to be a “good father” as he was.

Finally, this Father’s Day, let’s pause and say a heart-felt “thank you” to each of our fathers for a job well done.

We recognize our dads who have placed their families first. We honor their daily efforts in raising their chil-dren well and teaching them the valuable lessons of life. Father’s Day is a cel-ebration of the life they have given to us and for us. – Catholic News Service

Let Kawhi Enjoy Toronto, Mayor Tory and Superfan Bhatia urge fans and media Field Level Media/Reuters

Toronto Mayor John Tory held a news conference on Saturday to ask Raptors fans and the media for a fa-vor.

Leave Kawhi Leonard alone and let him enjoy Toronto -- and enjoy it so much he wants to stay for good.

Since the Raptors won the NBA title on June 13, Leonard's journey around Toronto has been chronicled on social media. He's been photo-graphed running errands, eating in restaurants and taking in a Toronto Blue Jays game.

Tory was joined by Raptors' superfan Nav Bhatia at Saturday's news con-ference.

"We are just trying to say to the fans, ‘Yes, we know you are very excited, you have reason to be excited but give him the space to eat where he wants to eat and shop where he wants to shop,'" Bhatia said.

"If you see him say ‘Thank you' and move on and let him enjoy himself."

Leonard, acquired last summer by the Raptors, can become a free agent on June 30. Numerous reports have said Leonard wants to return to his native Southern California and is likely to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Tory and Bhatia are making an effort to show him how beloved he is in the city.

They, along with Paramount Fine Foods CEO Mohamad Fakih, have created a website, KawhiUShould-Stay.com, where fans can sign a peti-

tion. As of Saturday afternoon, it had about 6,000 signatures.

"If the voice of the fans should be heard, which it should, then the best way to do that, the Toronto way to do that, is to sign this petition," Tory said.

Nearly 6 million people live in the Toronto metro area.

Leonard was named the MVP of the NBA Finals, when the Raptors defeat-

ed the defending champion Golden State Warriors in six games. It was the first championship for the Rap-tors, who joined the league in 1995.

In the playoffs, Leonard averaged 30.5 points and 9.1 rebounds over 39.1 minutes in 24 games. In the reg-ular season, he averaged 26.6 points and 7.3 rebounds in 34 minutes per game.

He turns 28 on June 29.

Toronto graphic artist, Jazztin Torralba, is getting a lot of attention on his Simpsons-inspired characterization of Raptor players. Here is one on Leonard with all the attention he is getting.

Myles Mendoza, eldest son of proud parents, Nancy and Tony holds his hard-earned diploma. Congratulations!.
