Their intellectual accomplishments, however, were only one of many talents they developed during their time at Felsted. Stephanie was an NCO in the School’s Cadet Force, while Lucy was an articulate public speaker and one of the best cricketers and hockey players in her year group. They have been good friends since Yr 7, always encouraging each other to achieve their chosen goals. The aim of the Felsted Network is to create enterprise through connecting Felstedians and parents with each other, to help Felstedians in their career development and to provide work experience, mentoring and career advice to current pupils and graduates. Round SquareVirtual ChoirAngus Nicholson, U6, hasbeen commissioned tocompose a choral workwhich will be recorded bya virtual choir made up ofsingers from schoolsacross Europe. OnceAngus’ piece is composedand notated, it will be sentto participating EuropeanRound Square schools,who will record theircontributions. These willthen be mixed together toproduce a work that willsum up the Round Squarein song.

Pupils debate at Geneva UNSix pupils experienced lively debate at the Students Leagueof Nations Conference, which took place in one of theactual United Nations buildings in Geneva. Controversialtopics included enforcing a burqa ban and introducing anopen-border policy.

Felsted’s commitment to bringingan international dimension topupils’ education has beenrecognised by the British Council,which has given both the Seniorand Preparatory School theprestigious International SchoolAward. This distinction is for UKschools that can demonstrate atruly international outlook.

Felsted gains International School Award

Challenging debate at Felsted’s second MUNA second successful Model United Nations Conference took place here in February. With the theme of ‘NaturalDisasters’, students from both the Preparatory and Senior Schools took part, in addition to 200 pupils from 18

different schools including one from Dubai, one fromSwitzerland and two from Germany. The conference gavethem all an opportunity to listen and learn, to vote on globalissues and to contribute and have their opinions heard. Theconference was organised by our Lower Sixth InternationalBaccalaureate students and included guest speaker Mr PeterScott-Bowden, Head of the Pandemic Response Unit for theUN World Food Programme (and a Felsted parent), who gavea fascinating insight into his work.

Greek Mythology was the theme at the Preparatory School withpupils dressed as gods and goddesses, heroes and heroines,and Titans! The highlight however, was a visit by author andillustrator Nick Butterworth, who inspired both children and staffwith ideas for his stories and showed them the process ofplanning andcompleting theillustrations. We aredelighted to havesome of his uniqueillustrations on viewin our new StewartHouse building.

Round SquareInternational Conference18 Round Square schools from the UK, Switzerland,Germany, France, Denmark and Morocco cametogether to discuss Service. Good practice wasshared and the Felsted delegation has come backwith many ideas as to what more they can do todevelop Service within the School and in the widercommunity.

Felsted’s annualInternational Dinner is acelebration ofinternationalism at Felstedand evidence of the richblend of culture andtradition that thrives here.The evening was openedby Filip Bigos, whodelivered a speech on theimportance of eachindividual’s pride in theirown culture and the needto remain true to yournationality, despite livingand working away from home. It was also an exquisitetouch to hear extracts from the anthems of the 26nations represented at Felsted!

Two students from Peruspent five weeks enjoyinga taste of Felsted life,shadowing Lower Sixthformers Katie Sunnucksand Alice Stone as part ofthe Round Square Schoolexchange programme.Katie and Alice thenenjoyed a return exchangeto Lima for three weeksand also got involved in alocal community project.Likewise, JamesStuchfield tookadvantage of this opportunity and spent some time atSouthport School in Australia during the summer.

Many more Felstedians will be experiencing internationalexchanges this academic year. We are alreadyexpecting visitors from Westminster School in Adelaide,New England Girls’ School in New South Wales, andthe United World College in South East Asia.

Felsted pupils gained another impressiveset of results in 2011. Seven studentsgained all A* or A grades and animpressive 18 students gained eight ormore A* and A grades. Felsted’s topperformer was Sam McArdle, whosecured an astonishing straight run of 12A* grades and an A grade in FSMQMaths. The highest-performingdepartments, achieving a highpercentage of A* or A grades, wereBiology (61%), Chemistry (61%), Latin(60%), Art (59%), Physics (52%) andEnglish Language (51%).

Felsted Preparatory School is one offew schools nationally to achieve theprestigious Challenge Award for Able,Gifted and Talented Pupils in Science,Technology, Engineering andMathematics. Felsted providesextension programmes in many differentareas to challenge children in theirlearning.

Running in unison with the Felsted Network, OldFelstedians and current parents are getting involved ina more active way to inspire our current students intheir potential future careers. A particular example wasan Art Evening, where four of our former students, whonow have successful careers in the worlds of art,design and architecture, returned to tell us about theircareers. Architect Matthew Wilkinson, who is in chargeof the redevelopment of the Victoria and AlbertMuseum entrance; Charlotte Belcher, who works atLondon’s Halcyon Gallery; James Iveson, an awardwinning painter who is currently supported by theprestigious Jackson Pollock and Lee KrasnerFoundation in the United States; and Chloe Mellish,who designs for the re-branded KEW clothing range.The pupils were treated to four very dynamic speakerswith one big message for them – ‘do not let go of yourdream, if you want something you must go and get it,no matter how tough things may seem’.

New Work Education CentreA dedicated Work Education Centre hasbeen created to extend the strength of theCareers Department.

Lower Sixth studentsdemonstrated theirentrepreneurial skillsrecently when theytook part in TheCompany Programme,a national competitionfor students who mustset up and run theirown company for oneacademic year.Elwyn’s cookbookreached the Essex finaland raised an impressive £1,398.

Choristers sing out in ItalyA combination of singers from the Preparatoryand Senior School choirs visited Umbria for sixdays over the Easter break and sang four Massservices in different churches, including theAnglican church in Rome.

Percussion Day is bang onThe Percussion Day in May was a real treat for allthose who attended. Michael Skinner, PrincipalPercussionist at the Royal Opera House for 31 years,improved everyone’s rolls with a masterclass on thesnare drum before Gurdain Rayatt demonstrated andperformed on the Tabla. The two greatly contrastingperformers of the highest order were a real treat.Richard Rayner, UK Drummer of the Year 2009 andGepp’s L6, performed a couple of drum solos beforestepping out from behind the kit to perform Ghanaiaon the Marimba with his younger brother, Peter,accompanying him on the Cajon. Eric Delaney thenjoined Richard and our very own Crissy Lee for a three-kit extravaganza which really raised the roof.

Arts Highlights

‘YoungVoices’ singat the O256 Preparatory pupilsjoined 8,000 otherchildren to sing as part ofthe ‘Young Voices’massed children’s choir,performing in front of12,000 enthusiasticsupporters at theimpressive O2 arena inLondon, to support thechildren’s cancer charity,CLIC Sargent. They werejoined by dance groupUrban Strides, singersJosh Osho, DionneBromfield and classicalquartet All Angels.

The Music Department was out in force and withperformances from all of the School’s ensembles. Threepupils played major solo roles accompanied by theorchestra – Maddie Seacombe sang Puccini, Will Gwytherperformed The Acrobat on the trombone, and Wing Changave a beautiful account of Beethoven’s G Major Romancefor Violin and Orchestra. There were accomplished soloperformances from U6 leavers and Thunder made greatuse of electronic drum kits, and the Jazz Band rounded offthe evening with a lively set of Latin standards.

Highlights includedan amazing piano recitalby the great John Lill, anevening with SimonHeffer and a superbperformance of TheGhost Train by the SeniorSchool cast. Animpressive Art Exhibitionincluded privatecollections of Scottishand other British watercolours of the 19th and20th centuries, OF OliverEverett educated us withtreasures from the RoyalCollection and renownedjazz singer JacquiDankworth entertainedus in style. The final eventof the whole series was achoral evening in theLord Riche Hall in whicha mass choral choir ofsome 120 voices gave itsall in a fantastic andvibrant performance ofFanshawe’s AfricanSanctus.

He is also through to the final ten of BBCYoung Percussionist of the Year 2012!

Rehan Hassan, 16, isbalancing his A Levelstudies alongside trainingwith the Essex CricketAcademy and theEngland DevelopmentProgramme. He will bespending seven to tendays every month atLoughborough Universityin preparation for an Indiatour in February. Thehighlight of his cricketingcareer to date has beento play for the EnglandDevelopment Squadagainst Scotland U19’s inAugust, where he scored111 runs in one of theinnings. Last summer hereceived his EnglandSchools Cap fromAndrew Strauss, playingagainst the MCC. Healso made his debut forEssex playing for thesecond team againstSomerset. Rehan is

The First XI had the greathonour of hosting theMarylebone Cricket Cluband played with amazingpanache to secure adraw. Felsted were putinto bat first, declaring295 for 4 off of 52 overs.The MCC started off wellbut then Jake Foleycame on after tea andtook five wickets for 25runs, supported by theother four bowlers takingone wicket each. This ledto a draw, with the MCCfinishing on 205-9.

First XI take on Fozzy’s Essex Felsted hosted an excellent celebration of cricket whenJames Foster’s Essex County Cricket side took on theFelsted 1st XI in a Twenty/20 match, in support ofJames’s benefit year and the School’s Australia CricketTour 2012. The match was played in fantastic spirit ina wonderful atmosphere with Essex emerging asworthy winners who commented on the outstandingquality of the young Felsted team.

NationalFinalists at theBritish Schools’Go KartingChampionships

The Felsted Dance Academylaunched this year offeringpupils a new generation ofdance classes, including ballet, tap, technical andcommercial jazz. With an emphasis on performance,the Academy aims to produce confident, rhythmic,elegant dancers.

In September KieranNorris, 15, was awardedthe Tim Reader MemorialTrophy for the mostimproved Junior Boy Skierin England at the AllEngland Championships.This award is chosen by apanel of coaches and hasbeen won in the past bytop names in English skiracing. All recent winnersare now in the GB team,including Dave Ryding oneof the GB elite athletes.

Kieran has also beenselected to take part in thetime trial selection processfor the 1st Winter YouthOlympic Games. Kieran isable to balance his trainingon the slopes and schoolwork with the support ofhis Housemaster, Tutorand the Felsted teachingnetwork.

5th at the National Schools’ Show Jumping ChampionshipFelsted show jumping team gave an impressiveperformance at The National Schools’ EquestrianAssociation Championship, finishing fifth place overall.Anna Stonham, Mollie Stonham, Tessa Reed andAlicia Wilkinson jumped at a height of 1.10m on a verytechnical course. Only the best eight teams jumpedagainst each other in the final round and Felsted wereplaced fifth overall, a tremendous achievement.

Student democracySenior School students are now actively involved in the Teaching Appointment Panel, Teaching and LearningCommittee, Healthy Schools Committee and 450th Celebration Committee. Preparatory School pupils havean active Pupil Council made up of League and Boarding Captains and have just appointed Prefects for thefirst time. Pupil evaluation of teaching has been key to improvements.

In particular two Felsted parents, Andrea Dowling andAndrew Wise gave students a valuable insight into theworld of investment banking. With clients such asTommy Hilfiger and endless travelling opportunities,this industry is one which clearly appeals to many ofour students. Other sessions have covered careers inlaw, the sciences, the arts, gap year opportunitiesand visits to UCL and the Sanger Institute.

Parent Alison Moscozza held a fascinatingmasterclass on medicines and how they are made,for Yr 6, as part of Science week.

Felsted ‘In Harmony’ Felsted’s Music Department raised £950 in post-concert collections for the work of In Harmony Norwich,a charity that provides free instruments, musical tuitionand ensemble experience to pupils in primary schoolsin very deprived areas.

Piano marathonfor Magic Bus Gus Nicholson played thepiano solidly for 12 hoursand raised £3,000 towardshis trip to support theMagic Bus in Mumbai.Young Felstediansdropped by to support himduring this piano marathon.

Eight Sixth Formers spent October halfterm in Mumbai, supporting the MagicBus charity set up by OF MatthewSpacie (d 83-85), which takes childrenoff the slums of Mumbai and empowersthem in areas of education, gender, health, leadership andlivelihood through sport for development. Pupils faced up to manychallenges and dealt with extremely difficult circumstances. Theyaddressed their fears and realised that by going the extra milethey gained so much inconfidence and becamestronger people for it.

Felsted’sArcticconnectionIn 1917, Felsted sponsoreda husky dog as part ofScott’s epic expedition tothe Arctic. So when anappeal for funds to helprestore the explorer’sfamous Arctic hut wasreceived, Felsted washappy to oblige. SeniorSchool pupils paid £1 towear their winter clothes and raised £500 for the ScottExpedition Hut Restoration Project. The hut, which hasbeen exposed to a century of frozen conditions, stillcontains boxes of stores belonging to Scott’s party from1917, and has been described by Sir David Attenboroughas ‘a monument to the great age of heroic exploration.’

Felsted youngapprenticesYr 10 took part in an‘Enterprise in Action Day’ –an Apprentice-typechallenge in small teams tocreate a new brand and aproduct. There was a greatvariety of products, from liedetector bracelets to iPodspeakers for baths andshowers, however theproduct which won overallwas the product ‘Den-ît’,created by LydiaCarrington, Emil Benz,Camille Brien, Lizzie Cole,Sebastian Bulgin andEdgar Burchell. Thisproduct was aneducational toy aimed atchildren under 8, and hada retail price of £20. It is aDIY tent, which allowschildren to build dens intheir homes or garden,and teaches them theskills of teamwork andfollowing instructions.

There were clothesof all different stylesand sizes on offer,as well as a newsection for jewellery,at the annual charitySwishing Event. Organised by the SustainabilityTeam and the Girls’ Houses and sponsored byBenefit, all proceeds went to Mencap.
