Lent CourseThis year’s Lent Course will be followingthe course entitled, “Stepping intoEvangelism.” The Archbishop of

Canterbury isencouraging allchurches to runthis coursebecause, (ashe says), Godcharges us allto be witnessesto Jesus Christ. This is NOT acourse that willask you tostand on soapboxes andshout all sorts of things – so PLEASEdon’t be intimidated by the title. But it is acourse that will help you to think aboutwhat your faith means to you and how youmight be able to talk about it to otherswhen an opportunity comes along. If noone had told you about what being aChristian was all about, you wouldn’t bea Christian now! If Christians can’t talkabout their faith, then Christianity is onegeneration away from extinction. So docome along and encourage others to joinyou. JaneVenue: St John’s Church centre,Chipping Sodbury.Leaders: Staff teamTimes and Dates of the course:

Giving upDear FriendsAs you read this we will be looking forward to the Lent which most people regard asa season when we discipline ourselves to give up something. However Lent is primarilya season for looking forward in hope towards the amazing truth of Easter when Godthrough His Son saved us from living in our own strength to His enabling. Thealternative to giving up food is to give up time to use Lent for reflection and a disciplineto contemplate the many blessings God has given us. This is a more positivemanifestation of the discipline of holding back. The period of Lent reflects the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness following Hisbaptism. This was a time of retreat for Jesus away from the challenge and busynessof His life to contemplate the work of reconciliation which God had given Him to carryout amongst His people. The devil tempted Jesus to eat rather than fast when He washungry, to assume power and authority to rule the world and to show off His miraculoussupernatural powers. Jesus refused all these tempting offers because His call was tosave through brokenness and suffering; not through boasting about who He was orwhat He had given up.It is counter initiative to turn down the celebrity status, a comfortable lifestyle and thechance to have power and influence, but this is where the Christian life begins.Christianity is not about an easy and comfortable life protected from suffering, butneither is it just about denying ourselves. The challenge is to have the passion to followthe good news we believe in and to nail our colours to the mast wherever that maylead. Jesus does not expect us to be perfect, but He will demand our loyalty and

devotion when we follow Him.Recently we have been aware of thetremendous pressures on ordinary healthworkers and the major incidents whichboth of our Trust hospitals in Gloucesterhave had to declare in order to call in offduty workers to help relieve the crush.Bishop Martyn requested each of thechurches to pray for the NHS and many ofus may feel excessive pressure in our ownjobs and lifestyle. With Christ’s help we canfocus down this Lent to try and review whatwe would like to get out of life. Jesus asour creator knows our gifts and limitationsintimately and it’s only by knowing His way

for our lives that we will be at peace. Why don’t we make some time this Lent to spend time with God who can help us toget our lives rebalanced again.May God rest His peace on each one of us this Lent.Peter Fewings

A Prayer for workers in theNHS from Bishop MartynGracious God,Your Son Jesus Christ healed the sick andgave them new life.Be with all doctors, nurses, carers andchaplains as they act as agents of healing, and be with all who support their work inour health services.Give them strength each day for the workyou have called them to.In difficult times give them wisdom, loveand compassion;  and be close to them intheir weariness and intheir tears. We ask this in the nameof Jesus Christ our Lord,Amen.

Betty WillmottI would like to thank everyone for all theircards and messages of support followingMum’s recent death. It was wonderful tosee the church so full for the funeral and Iknow that she would not have believed somany would come to say goodbye. Shehad a wonderful life even though the lastfew years were curtailed by her stroke. Somany wrote and commented on her smileso that is how I hope she will beremembered.I received a card from Chris Wray andthought I would share part of what hewrote. “We have so many happy memoriesof Betty from her superior catering, toflower arranging and I always have apicture of her vaulting over the centralreservation of the bypass!”That sums Mum up so well. Thank you toyou all. Diane

SAMSON! THERE IS AN ANGRY PHILISTINE AT THEDOOR AGAIN - WHAT HAVE YOU DONE NOW!

Shrove TuesdayTuesday 17 February 2015The day before Lent begins is calledShrove Tuesday. 'Shrove' means beingforgiven for wrong-doings.People went to church to confess theirsins and would be 'shriven' or forgivenbefore the start of Lent. As rich foodssuch as eggs were forbidden during Lent, one way of using them up would be tomake pancakes.

Many people make pancakes on ShroveTuesday and in some parts of the UK runin pancake races. This custom grew upbecause of a legend dating from 1445.On Shrove Tuesday one woman was stillmaking pancakes as the church bellsrang. Rather than be late she took herfrying pan and pancake with her.

SycamoreTreeProgramme

We are looking for voluntaryfacilitators for this programme. You will be given training andwould be required to give onemorning per week for a 7 weekperiod. The course will runthree times in 2015 and youwould be invited to participatein at least one of these.Who is the programme for?The programme is open to those withinthe criminal justice system of any age, gender, race, faith and is fully inclusive.

The programme:Helps offenders look at● The attitude of offenders

towards victims● The attitude of victims towards

offenders● The need for restoration,

forgiveness and restitutionThe Sycamore Tree programme is aVictim Awareness course based onthe well established principles of‘Restorative Justice’. RestorativeJustice processes facil itate thebringing together of victims of crime, offenders, and where appropriate thecommunity or other agencies toconfront the offender with theconsequences of her actions.Prisoners will not have to face theirown victim, but The RestorativeJustice process allows a victim ofcrime to explain to them how similaractions have affected him/her andothers close to them. During the

Sycamore Tree programme thefollowing issues are considered:● that each offence committed

against another person has farreaching consequences andpeople need to acceptresponsibly for their actions.

● that offenders and victims musthave the opportunity to explainto each other how they feelabout the offence

● to understand and explore theBiblical concepts of repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation

● and for the offender to offerrestitution to victims

Restorative Justice is not a softoption, and this course helps youbecome aware of the impact of yourcrime upon your victim/s. Thecourse will help you understand anindividual responsibility for ouractions and what we can do torepair the damage caused..Prison Fellowship will ensurethat the delivery of theprogramme content is effectiveby monitoring and evaluatingTutors and Group Facilitators

National Marriage WeekOne of the joys of being a parish priest isworking with couples to plan theirweddings and to officiate on their specialday. At this stage in their relationship theyfeel ready to commit themselves to eachother in church, before God, in thepresence of their family and friends.Couples put a lot of thought and effort intoorganising their celebrations and it is aprivilege to spend time talking with themabout their plans, while at the same timepreparing them to enter into the sacramentof marriage. We talk not only about the weddingceremony in the preparation meetings, however, but also about building a healthymarriage. Marriages can get better andbetter as each year passes, but it doestake time and effort. In all the busyness oflife this can so easily slip.National Marriage Week (7 – 14 February),with its focus on Valentine’s Day, is anannual seven day period to focus on theimportance of the marriage relationship. Many churches hold special servicesduring this period. These can be wonderfulopportunities for couples to remember thelove that brought them to their weddingday and to recall that ‘God is love, andthose who live in love live in God and Godlives in them.’ (1 John 4.16).The Revd Canon Philippa Brunt

What's so special aboutmarriage?Marriage is a very ancient idea. The Biblesuggests it goes right back to Adam andEve, who were 'made for each other'.Jesus' teaching on marriage, as exclusive, unbreakable and forging a new family unit, drew on this original blueprint. And Jesusloved a good wedding: he turned waterinto wine at a wedding reception, his first

recorded miracle. Even today, marriageexists in practically every country andculture on earth.Christians believe that marriage is a giftfrom God. There is something in a publiccommitment of this magnitude that has aspiritual element to it and which cantransform a relationship to a new anddeeper level.God intended marriage to offer the rightplace to grow in love and support for eachother, fulfil our sexuality and provide astable and secure environment forbringing up children. Marriage can changeus for the better, and as we change, ourmarriage grows along with us.To find out more about what Christiansbelieve about marriage, visit the Churchof England website:www.yourchurchwedding.org/faqs/frequently-asked-questions.aspx

Marriage is good for yourhealth and extends your lifeA recent University study (How doesmarriage affect physical and psychologicalhealth?) went so far as to say that theimpact of marriage on health and lifeexpectancy, particularly in men, wasalmost equivalent to giving up smoking.Comparing a variety of other academicpapers, it concluded:● Marriage makes people far less likely

to suffer mental health problems● Marriage makes people live much

longer

● Marriage makes people healthier andhappier

● Both men and women benefitAnother study (Is It Money Or MarriageThat Keeps People Alive?) also offerssuggestions that:● Marriage may reduce stress● Marriage may help couples develop

healthier habits and suppress badones.

● A spouse also makes it more likelythat there will be someone there tocare in times of illness.

In a study of people over the age of 65, itwas found that those who said they werehappily married had much higher levels ofantibodies in the blood. Married people, therefore, could be more likely to fight offthe flu virus and other common

Who was St Valentine? The first official Saint Valentine's Day wasdeclared on 14th of February by PopeGalasius in 496, in memory of a 3rdcentury martyred priest in Rome. The young priest betrayed EmperorClaudius in 270 AD by conductingillegitimate wedding ceremonies. EmperorClaudius claimed that married men madepoor soldiers and consequently decreedthat all marriages of younger citizenswould be outlawed. Bishop Valentine, however, maintained that marriage waspart of God's plan and purpose for theworld. He continued to conduct marriagesin secret in the name of love.He was jailed and ultimately beheaded, but not before he fell in love with thejailer's daughter. It is thought that on theevening of his execution the bishoppassed her a note which read "from yourValentine".

Freedom of SpeechI was appalled not long ago when apopular TV programme, showed a clip ofthree dogs waiting in a prayer positionwhilst their owner said grace and thenwolfing down their food.My shock was caused by the presenterspeaking over the eating dogs as if theywere saying ‘Body of Christ. Body ofChrist’ in a silly dog type voice. I wasappalled and repulsed by the TVprogramme that seemed to me to bepillorying something I, along with countlessother Christians, hold dear to my heart. Iwas brought to the point of questioninghow much we as Christians tolerate or turnthe other cheek to these forays ofsupposed comedy into that which we holdto be central to our faith. The programme was aired in the sameweek as the occurrence of a majorinternational diplomatic incident overSony’s withdrawal of ‘The Interview,’ aspoof film about an attemptedassassination of the North Korean leaderKim Jong-il, due to cyber threats madeseemingly by North Korean hackers. It certainly seems apparent that we live ina global world without a global culture andhence a global tolerance of free speech. And more recently the attack on theCharlie Hebdo offices and the Jewishsupermarket has given the issueprominence again. The events beg thequestion if a religion has certain standardsabout it, such as not having imagery oftheir God, does the rest of the world havelicense to disrespect or disregard suchprinciples of faith? Or would the standardsof that faith benefit from considering theirstance or should they be caused tomoderate their values in order to fit in withthe rest of the world? The Pope has saidthat it is right to speak one’s mind for the

sake of the common good. But hequalified that by saying that you cannotprovoke, insult or make fun of the faith ofothers. One of my daily prayer readings spoke intothese situations for me. The reading wasfrom Jude who was struggling for theintegrity of the faith. It speaks of thecontest between the Archangel Michaeland the devil when Michael dare not bringa denunciation of slander against him.Instead Michael said ‘The Lord rebukeyou!’ Jude considered that people slanderwhatever they do not understand. So when we feel our faith has beenpublicly insulted publicly, do we stand byand let it happen or react? I believe everytime we feel like this our first resort shouldbe to prayer, to see our Lord in thatsituation and to invite him into ouremotions and our actions. I am thoughaware that cartoonists, TV presenters, allforms of media need to be very careful ofwho they scorn, our God is powerful andmighty and he who created the heavensand the earth is more than capable ofdealing with such incidents. At the sametime there’s a challenge, who of us hasn’tsaid or done something before God thatwe bitterly regret? We too rely on thegrace of our God for forgiveness. AChristian’s greatest gift is love butalongside that Matthew 5:12 calls us torejoice and be glad when we’re persecutedbecause it happened to the prophets.Hard though isn’t it? Yvonne

Why I chose GodDaniel Lee’s Story

"I'd like to say that the time of mysalvation was a huge turning point, butit wasn't. I was one of the ones wherethe sower's seed landed on rockyground"

Up until my teenage years, I didn't believein God. I had friends that were Christians, but I saw their beliefs as being silly, and awaste of time. My ignorance led me tobelieve that being a believer meantadhering to the 10 Commandments, goingto church, and praying a lot. This was notsomething I wanted to do. I had heard ofJesus, but did not know Him. I would, actively, ridicule my friends for believingin some imaginary friend. In the summer of 1994, I went along withmy friends to church camp. My main goalwas to enjoy the weather and theoutdoors, and have a lot of fun. I figured Iwould coast through the ‘religious' stuff, and concentrate on the entertaining stuff. One night, there was apresentation/discussion on the Gospel. Itwas my first time hearing of it, and I wasintrigued. It was beginning to make a lotof sense, and it made me feel a weird

rush. After the final verse was read, wewere given the opportunity to receiveJesus through the Lord's Prayer.Personally, I was still resistant to receivingChrist. I felt my heart racing, but I didn'twant to give in. The Gospel was good, butmy mind didn't want to admit it. It wasgoing to resist. Finally, it was my turn tomake a choice, and I just broke down frombeing overwhelmed. I let Jesus into mylife, and I felt the surge of the Holy Spirit.I'd like to say that the time of my salvationwas a huge turning point, but it wasn't. Iwas one of the ones where the sower'sseed landed on rocky ground (Matt 13:20).I had salvation, but I was distracted by theworld. I didn't go out and party like theprodigal son, but I was not attendingchurch, I didn't pray, and I didn't even pickup my bible.A decade later, of aimlessly going throughlife, I got a job doing tech support at asoftware company. My boss, Susan, wasChristian, and she was a good leader thatI respected. She learned that I hadpreviously accepted Christ, and kind oflost my way. She encouraged me tocheck out a church that she really enjoyedgoing to. With a bit of reluctance, I decidedto check it out, and I was blown away. Themessage that was being spoken that daywas one of salvation: It's not because ofmy works that would save me, but by thework of Jesus on the cross! I started goingback to church on a regular basis, as Ineeded to learn more.In Feb 2004, I was involved in a severeaccident. The driver's side door got a littletoo personal with an unforgiving telephonepoll. I was in a coma for 18 hours. Duringthat time, Susan was trying to figure outwhy I didn't come to work, or call in. Whenshe found out the news from my mother, she, immediately, enlisted people to prayfor my recovery.

A Men’s Choir, conducted by Mike Daniels

When I woke up. I had no idea I was in acar accident. There was a nurse in thehospital room that explained to me that Iwas in a car accident, and my family wouldbe on their way. I cried, I could have easilydied. Miraculously, even though thetelephone pole penetrated half way intothe car, I didn't get any bones broken. Ihad a minor concussion, and was sore allover. I, continually, thanked God for mysurvival. I know God didn't cause thisaccident, but He was going to use it for HisGlory! The doctors were quite amazed at myprogress. My recovery was fast. I knewthat God wanted me whole again, and Iwas more than willing to do my part! I feltencouraged, and energized to put all ofmy effort into my recovery. Today, I stillhave a few scars from the accident, but Iknow that I am whole, thanks to my faithin Him!
