Ag Days in January brought Cheryl from the Canadian Angus Office

purchased their tags at Ag Days. Our numbers were way up and it

is encouraging to see the interest in the program.

MANITOBA ANGUS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING REPORT

Our Manitoba Angus Annual Meeting was held on January 7, 2012 at the Victoria Inn in Brandon, The meetings are held along with the 4 other Beef Breeds and we all join up at supper time for a banquet and entertainment.

An enthusiastic group of Angus Breeders attended the meeting and along with the various reports.The Association continues to spend a large amount of their budget on Promotion and advertising in the newsletter, newspapers, radio, and website www.mbangus.ca. 2011 was a big year for the Manitoba Angus Board hosting the National Angus Meetings in June in Clear Lake and the National Angus Show in November at the Manitoba Livestock Expo. The Volunteers and sponsorship from our Manitoba breeders and businesses was greatly appreciated.

Canadian Angus President, David Bolduc, Alberta and New CEO Rob Smith gave a detailed report on the happenings at the Canadian Angus Association, informing us that Registrations were up in 2011, the Canadian Angus have purchased land to build their office, the Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed program continues to grow, and it is important to get the Angus Green tags in your Angus Calves for marketability. Tag sales are up 11% for 2011 .

Manitoba Angus Congratulates N7 Stock Farm as 2011 Purebred Breeder of the Year

N7 Stock Farm is owned and operated by Gerald and Wendy Nykoliation and family. The farm is located four miles south and two west of Crandall, Manitoba. The oldest son Allan and wife Carolyn along with grandsons Ty and Lane live three miles away, while youngest son Cameron and wife Kaitlin have just bought a farm at Douglas, Manitoba. Daughter Kim and husband Chris live and work in Shoal Lake, although not directly involved in the operation, they enjoy coming out to help with the calves in the spring.

The farm is mixed operation consisting of 350 commercial cows and 130 purebred Black Angus cows. All calves are retained and back grounded or finished out allowing them to evaluate performance and carcass data within their herd.

In 1998 purebred Black Angus were added to the operation with the purchase of six bred heifers since then select females have been purchased , but the biggest influence on the herd as been through the use of AI as the majority of the purebreds are bred in that manner.

Showing cattle has always been an important part of the operation with all the kids going through 4-H program and participating in Junior Shows in three Prairie Provinces.

The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair in Brandon was and is, a not to be missed event. This year Cameron won the All Breed Jackpot Heifer Show with a Net Worth daughter. In June the cattle were off to Manitoba Angus Gold Show in Manitou, Manitoba winning Grand Champion Female and Grand Champion Male. In July, the cattle were on the infamous Milk Run. In the fall, the Angus National Show was held in Brandon with the Net Worth bred heifer winning Junior Champion Female. Next was a trip to Agribition with exposure to a new market and to promote their herd, This was their first year to be at the Keystone Klassic Sale in Brandon, they were fortunate to have consigned the high selling Black Angus heifer calf with their other consigned heifer being chosen by Raina Syrnyk, a Junior recipient of the $ 2000. Grand Moffat Memorial Award which is used to purchase a purebred heifer.

At the present time,they are readying a group of bull calves to be displayed at Ag Days in Brandon which has become a major marketing tool, as all their bulls are sold by private treaty at one of these shows or directly off the farm.

The Nykoliation’s are grateful for all the cattle friends they have made over the years and hope to make many more in the years to come.N7 Stock Farm would like to thank Manitoba Angus Association for this award and are truly grateful for the recognition and honor.

Robert Shwaluk lives on the south side of highway # 16, 1km east of Shoal Lake, Manitoba, across the road from the sign that reads “Big Black Bulls for sale”.Robert has previous experience as a director with the MCPA in the years 1994 to 2000 and is looking forward to his time as a director with the Manitoba Angus Association.Robert has about 250 commercial cows and 40 purebred Black Angus cows. He has fed his calves to finish for 27 years and believes that if everyone had to feed their calves to finish that cattle would look different today.He may not be a fan of the cattle show ring however, he is a fan of the bull test stations. With feeding to finish

calves that gained, marbled and yielded well were found to be most profitable. Therefore the data available at bull test stations has been very valuable when selecting replacement herd bulls.

Naomi Best (Junior Director)

Hello I am Naomi Best. My parents, Donald and Wenda and brother, Levi and I have a mixed farm near Harding called Clay Hills Livestock. My parents have been using Black Angus bulls on their commercial cows for 5 years. My brother and I have been building a small herd of purebred Black Angus females. I enjoy being a member of the Rivers 4-H Beef Club. My Angus heifers have done quite well at our club achievement. I have been very successful in the showing , exhibiting at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, Manitoba Livestock Expo and Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup to name a few.

This past summer I attended my first Junior Angus Showdown. It was a great experience. I am looking forward to learning opportunities that I will gain from representing the breed as a Junior Rep.

Canadian Angus CEO Report – Rob Smith2011 has been a very busy year for the Canadian Angus Association!

Registrations are up 1% to 55,816 Transfers are up 4% to 23,008 Memberships down 3% to 2,562 Tag Sales are up 11% to 266,910

Weights are up 3% to 71,184

This is great news as the cow herd numbers across Canada are shrinking so the Angus breed is holding our own. Angus is still the only breed with a tag program along with the Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed program so we need to be proud of our breed and its accomplishments that included:

169 Angus feature sales at 67 participating auction markets;•More auction markets expressing interest in all-tagged Angus sales for 2012.•

Some of the highlights in 2011 are:CAA experienced a ‘break even’ financial report for the first time in three years.- Very successful annual meeting held at Clear Lake, MB in June.- Baldy Fundraiser for the Canadian Angus Foundation extremely successful (over $27,000 raised).- Former CEO Doug Fee was honored at the annual meetings in Clear Lake and we thank Doug for all his years of service and dedication to the Angus - breed. Senior Registrar Sharmayne Byrgesen also moved on in December, paving the way for Rob Smith and Stacy Price, respectively, to become part of the CAA organization.Land was purchased at Wagon Wheel Park east of Balzac, AB, just north of Calgary, for the new Canadian Angus Association office in the National - Beef Centre.Austen Anderson is an outstanding 2011 Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador.- A comprehensive survey was sent out to all members and 10% were returned which is way above average. The results are being compiled.- Creation of the new “Canadian” and “Straight Canadian” designations.- Creation of the International Export Affidavit.-

New rules or standards accepted by either the Board or the membership are as follows:

Four by-law amendments approved by the membership and ratified by the Minister in 2011 – 1) Reduction in the size of the national Board to 10 Directors; 2) Method of calling a special meeting of the Board; 3) Administrative change deleting reference to telegrams; 4) Rules of eligibility for genetic defect carriers.

The proposed new mission statement was approved by the membership but rejected by the Minister. The Board chose to adopt this statement as a Vision Statement for the Association: “The Canadian Angus Association exists to preserve and expand the Angus breed to provide the best opportunities for profitability for future generations.”

The long-term recognition program was expanded to recognize 50, 75 and 100 years of continuous family membership in the Canadian Angus Association.

Elite Dam status and Premier Dam status is designated on registration papers through the use of a unique symbol.

We have expanded our member tools by collecting udder and teat scores from those members who want to submit them.

The Official Regulations Governing Artificial Insemination were amended to read: If a cow is re-bred by artificial insemination or by natural service from a different sire within 14 days of the previous service, the owner is required to report both services to the Canadian Angus Association registry office and a parentage test will be required. These sires are required to be parentage verified to both sire and dam. It shall be the responsibility of the breeder to bear the cost of such parentage test.

All Canadian Angus Association members who sell under the standard Terms and Conditions of the Canadian Angus Association, including the Breeder’s Guarantee Guidelines, must disclose genetic defect status, Red-carrier and Elite Cow status. Non-compliance is subject to one warning with a $500 fine on subsequent violations. All Canadian Angus Association activities and services will be suspended until the fine is paid.

Effective January 1, 2012, the Canadian Angus Association will begin transitioning to SNP parentage verification. Microsatellite testing via DNA will continue to take place for a period of time.

Registration of herd names will be mandatory as of January 1, 2013. As of January 1, 2013, it will be mandatory to use the registered herd name in each animal name. The placement of the registered herd name will also be standardized to be the prefix of the calf name, so that the herd of origin is always identifiable.

Starting in 2012, regional associations will only receive funding for Gold Show animals that are both registered in the Canadian Angus Association herd book and identified with a Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed RFID tag.

Fee schedule changes:The fee to change the name of a registered animal (with no registered progeny) was reduced from $200 to $50 effective July 1.•The electronic registration incentive discount became a permanent feature of the fee schedule in 2012. Spring-calving herds may register their •calves born in the current calendar year on or before July 15 with fall-calving herds having until December 15 to register their calves for $15 regardless of the age of the calf at the time of registration provided the registration is submitted electronically.The fee for Pedigree Extract requests with registration numbers sent electronically increased to $2.50 each effective October 26.•Herd data extracts for on-farm software programs cost $80 effective October 26. This is a one-time expense to export herd data from the Canadian •Angus Association herd book for the member’s software program.A $25 annual user fee for Canadian Angus Performance Program members to cover the cost of program enhancements started January 1, 2012. •CJAA member herds are exempt from this fee.

So as you can see, the CAA has been very busy this year as we continue to provide the best services available for our membership.

KELSEY STEWART WINS SCHOLARHIP.Kelsey Stewart, daughter of Brent & Dale Stewart, Russell,MB was the recipient of one of the Canadian Western Agribition scholarships for year 2011.

Kelsey is attending Brandon University, Brandon,MB., studying for her Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

Kelsey’s 14 year involvement with CWA, has seen her compete in the Junior steer show, Junior Beef Extreme show, Junior showmanship, Purebred Charolais and Black Angus open shows

After 15 years in the Canadian Angus Association Registry Department, Sharmayne Byrgesen is changing careers. Sharmayne’s last day in the office will be Friday, December 16.

Our new Registrar is Stacy Price. Stacy will join us in January. We have also hired a part-time Assistant Registrar, Esther Stern.

Member Communications Specialist Tina Zakowsky will be going on maternity leave in February 2012. Cassie Bacon will cover Tina’s position until her return in 2013.

48th Annual Douglas Bull Test Station SaleApril 7th, 2012 1:00 PM

The 48th Annual Douglas Bull Test Station season is now half way through with the 56 day reports being released on December 27th. There are 200 bulls and 16 heifers on test this year representing 10 breeds, with bulls from all over the country right from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario! This year there is a great selection of 80 top notch Black and Red Angus bulls with quality like no other! With the changes made there will be a larger offering of bulls for sale this year as we have made the move to be more of a development center than a test station with the removal of gain minimums on the bulls, which will allow for more heifer bulls to be sale eligible. All bulls will be for sale as long as they pass the breeding soundness, and semen examination at the end of March. The Angus bulls are currently averaging 4.15 lbs/day for average daily gain and 3.16 lbs/day for their weight per day of age! Be sure to check them out at the station anytime as the cattle can be viewed any day of the week 24 hrs a day! You will not be disappointed and it will be one of the best decisions for taking your cow herd to the next level in the ever progressing cattle business. NEW SNP Parentage VerificationThank you to all the members who responded to our call for sires and donor dams that need to have their parentage DNA upgraded to SNP technology. We are overwhelmed at the response that we got from all of you. We have compiled a list of over 2,800 DNA samples that need to be converted to SNP. This will take much longer than we anticipated, and additional funds for this conversion will need to be sought. Therefore, theconversiontoSNPparentageverificationhasbeendelayeduntilJuly1,2012.

Here is some information that members have asked for in the last few weeks:

Why the conversion?• The Association tries to bring to its membership the most up-to-date technology.

Will I be able to sell semen to the US and other countries with this type of parentage verification?• Yes, all the Angus Associations that belong to the World Angus Secretariat committed to convert to SNPs. And, both the American Angus Association and Red Angus Association of America have already done so.

Does the way that I order DNA kits or get parentage done change?• No, the process for our members will remain the same.

Will we need new DNA samples for the conversion?• No, we will use stored DNA for the conversion.

Sympathy To the Major Jay Fox FamilyPast President of the Manitoba Beef Prodcuers

Major Jay Fox died Friday December 23, 2011 in Winnipeg from injuries he suffered after being pinned Thursday evening by a tractor’s front-end loader bucket on his farm at Eddystone, about 75 km east of Dauphin.

Fox, 32, retired in November as a director of MBP, having served since 2009 as the organization’s President and previously as a Vice-President. Ray Armbruster of Rossburn took over as MBP president at the group’s annual meeting last month.

Fox and his wife Angela are well known in Manitoba’s agriculture community, having been named as the province’s Outstanding Young Farmers in 2008..

Donations can be made in Fox’s memory at any branch of TD Canada Trust for a trust fund for his children Devon, Charlee, Porter and Major, or to the Major Jay Fox Children Education Fund at RR4-Compartment 30, Dauphin, Mb R7N 2T7.

Manitoba Youth Win Purebred Heifers through the Grant Moffat Herd builder Award 2011Kayla Zamrykut, a 20 year old producer from Rorketon; Braden Calvert, a 16 year old producer from Carberry; and Raina Syrnyk, a 16 year old producer from Ethelbert were the 2011 recipients of the Grant Moffat Herd builder Award.

Grant Moffat, Holmsyde Charolais, Forrest, went missing in August, 2006. The funds generously donated by cattlemen, friends and relatives across the country were offered as a reward for tips leading to his whereabouts. After a year, a committee handling the funds made a decision to channel the money to Manitoba youth for the purpose of starting their own purebred herd.

Grantinvestedalotofenergyinactivelyhelpingyouthgetstartedinthebusinessandthisseemedthemostfittingwaytoutilizethefunds.Overtwentyapplicantssubmittedessays,makingtheselectionexceptionallydifficult.Theparticipantswereevaluatedondesire,needandpreviousexpressionofinterestintheindustry.Todate12JuniorsfromacrossManitobahavebenefitedfromtheprogram.

Each of the three youth were awarded up to $2000 towards the purchase of a heifer selected from a Manitoba purebred sale.

Kayla Zamrykut purchased a Charolais heifer, Braden Calvert purchased a Polled Hereford heifer and Raina Syrnyk purchased a Black Angus Female to enhance or start their purebred herd of cattle.

Canadian Junior Angus Manitoba Director Update by Megan Kemp

Hey hope everyone is enjoying seeing all the new calves hit the ground! I am going to start off by thanking all of the juniors in Manitoba for making my term with the Canadian Junior Angus Association such a great experience. I am been able to meet so many Angus members from across North America as well as have some great times. I would encourage any junior in the future to take the opportunity and run for the CJAA directorship. I am sad to leave my position as I will miss being part of the junior board but look forward to staying involved with the Angus industry in the future.

This February the Junior board will be hosting GOAL in Regina, SK and there are lots of fun activities planned. The CJAA offers many opportunities which are basically as simple as filling out a short application. There are three $1000 scholarships that are awarded each year and watch the Junior Connections newsletter on the website for more information but the deadline is June 15 for applications. I know how money can be tight while attending college or university so scholarships help out greatly. There are two travel opportunities for juniors to attend American Junior Angus events, being AJAA LEAD Conference and the JRAAA Round-UP tour. Both are great ways to meet other juniors as well as get to see some new country. The details are on the Junior page of the CAA website. www.cdnangus.ca then go to Juniors. The deadline is May 10 for these trips.

Last year I was one of four finalists for the Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador Competition, which is another great junior opportunity. Just ask Austen Anderson about all the great events he has got to take in as Ambassador. Showdown is the big highlight for the CJAA. This year is Showdown is to be held in Lindsay, Ontario in July 19-20 . I know that Naomi and Levi Best, Jennifer, Chris and Will Jermey; Austen Anderson, Katie-Jo Stehr, Gerard Wenzel, and Austin Kemp all had a blast last summer!
