He will be teaching in depth on Amitabha Pure Land practice. Amitabha, the Buddha of Infinite Light, is also known as Amitayus, the Buddha of Infinite Life. Together he is called the Buddha of Immeasurable Light and Life. He is known for his longevity attribute, magnetizing red fire element, discerning wisdom, pure perception, and deep awareness of the emptiness of phenomena. He is said to possess infinite merit from doing good deeds over countless past lives as a Bodhisattva named Dharmakara. After accumulating such great merit, he is said to have achieved Buddhahood and created the Pure Land called Sukhavati (Skt.) or Dewachen (Tib.). Dewachen is located in the Western direction, beyond our own world. By the power of his vows, he made it possible for all who call upon him to be reborn into this Pure Land instead of samsara and receive further teachings so we too may become a bodhisattva or fully awakened buddha. lotus wearing dharma robes with his hands held in the mudra of equanimity and holding a begging bowl. His aggregate is perception, the energy of which manifests as discriminating wisdom. His element is fire which manifests as his consort Pandara (Pandaravasini). He helps us overcome the "poison" of strong desires. His mantra is Om Amitabha Hri (usually pronounced Om Ami Dewa Hri). His two main disciples are Avalokiteshvara (the male Bodhisattva or Buddha of Compassion) and Vajrapani (the Bodhisattva or Buddha of Power). They are often included in the text of his sadhana practices. His Holiness the Dalai Lama is said to be an emanation of Avalokiteshvara. Amitabha is often invoked during Phowa practices (transfer of consciousness at the time of death) or as Amitayus for preventing an untimely death. These teachings are particularly appropriate for our aging population in general, helping others with aging and death, as well as our own aging process. A text will be provided. Rinpoche's teaching schedule is as follows (with suggested donations for each): Wednesday, February 5, 6pm - Amitabha Empowerment ($25) Thursday, February 6, 2pm and 6pm - Amitabha Pure Land teachings, including his relationship to Togal practice and the Bardos ($20 each, $40) Friday, February 7, 2pm and 6pm - Amitabha Pure Land teachings continue ($20 each, $40) Saturday, February 8, 10am and 2pm - Amitabha Pure Land teachings continue ($20 each, $40) Sunday, February 9, 10am and 2pm - Amitabha Pure Land teachings continue ($20 each, $40) Suggested donation of $150 for all. No one will be turned away for lack of ability to make full donations.

Awam Tibetan Buddhist Institute, 3400 E Speedway, Suite 204, Tucson AZ

(Located just east of Whole Foods in the Rancho Center) Losar is the Tibetan Lunar New Year celebration. It is customary to do cleaning before that date and also to prepare by doing Vajrakilaya practice, which we will do on Sunday, February 23 at 11am, instead of our usual Meditation Hour. We will use the Gurkhukma Kilaya text. Bring yours if you have one; otherwise copies will be available at the Center. Then on Monday, February 24 at 6pm, we will celebrate Losar with a smoke puja and tsok feast based on the Riwo Sangchod and Concise Tsok Offering texts by HH Dudjom Rinpoche. Since were also founded 20 years ago by Khenchen Gyaltsen and Acharya Cliff Leftwich as Dharmakirti College, then morphed into the Awam Tibetan Buddhist Institute under our current Spiritual Director, HH Khenchen Lama Rinpoche, we are also celebrating our 20th anniversary in Tucson. Therefore, Awam will be providing the meal and beverages for the tsok. In order to do that, it is necessary to get an accurate count of all those attending. Space at our center is limited (though we may change the venue if needed). Please call us at 520-622-8460 or email at [email protected] with the names of each participant as soon as possible, but no later than Monday, February 17. Thank you!

Dakini Day Practice - Kurukulle

Wednesday, February 26, 6pm

Awam Tibetan Buddhist Institute, 3400 E Speedway, Suite 204, Tucson AZ

(Located just east of Whole Foods in the Rancho Center

We honor Dakini Day on the 4th Wednesday each month. Our Dakini Day practice and tsok, is based on a series of four practices from HH Dudjom Rinpoche's The Dakini Heart Essence: (1) Yeshe Tsogyal as the outer dakini, (2) Kurukulle as the inner dakini, (3) Simhamukha as the secret dakini, and (4) Troma as the innermost secret dakini. We rotate through these four practices over 4 months. The next practice will be Kurukulle, the Female Buddha of Passion or Enchantment, inseparable from ultimate reality of wisdom, while perfectly engaged at the relative levels of our experience. Originating from the country of Uddiyana, Kurukulle in Tibetan means "she who is the cause knowledge." She became associated with the great goddess Tara and is often called Red Tara or Tarodbhava Kurukulle, "the Kurukulle who arises from Tara." In her relative aspect, Kurukulle becomes the Buddhist goddess of love and sex, corresponding to Aphrodite and Venus. She is red in color and is depicted as a voluptuous and seductive nude, sixteen-year-old girl. She has four arms and holds a flower-entwined bow and arrow that cannot kill and a hook and lasso in her other hands to bind her targets into the dharma. Her Buddha activity is magnetizing, i.e.,

Innate Happiness (Second Edition) A Direct Guidance Manual for Householder Yogis and Yoginis

By Khenpo Drimed Dawa (Khenpo Dean)

Paperback and Kindle versions available

Innate Happiness guides busy Westerners on the Buddhist path of liberation from "suffering" and "afflictive emotions" that obscure our Innate Happiness - our deep inner peace. Concise weekly practices are based on the yogi tradition of Tibetan Buddhism as described by Padmasambhava or Guru Rinpoche, considered to be the Second Buddha by Tibetans. The book includes a brief history of Buddhism in India and Tibet, as well as its major principles. This is followed by clear, concise steps on the Paths of Individual Liberation, Altruism, Tantra, and the Great Perfection. Each path takes the reader through the Three Trainings: ethics, meditation, and wisdom. It provides a complete cycle of for study, contemplation, meditation and liberation, that are highly suitable for the busy lives of Westerners with little time for formal meditation. One advanced student called it "the best book on the practice of Tibetan Buddhism available!"

The 100-Day Ngondro Retreat Based on the Longchen Nyingtik and The Words of My Perfect Teacher

By H.E. Lopon Natsok Zugchen (Jigme Lodro Rinpoche)

The ngondro (say "noon-dro") or preliminary practices of Vajrayana Buddhism help you set your intention and commitment to fully follow these teachings. There are several approaches that have been taught. One of them is doing a 100-day contemplative retreat. This is the practice described here, based on the Longchen Nyingtik. It is a supporting commentary ("son" text) to the widely respected text, The Words of My Perfect Teacher by Patrul Rinpoche.

Here, specific contemplations are assigned for twice each day, some being repeated for up to three days for a total of 100 days. Repetition with frequent changes provides a helpful method for reinforcement, as well as sustaining interest over the 100 days.

This approach is very suitable for busy Western practitioners, who often get discouraged trying to attain this essential preliminary practice requirement before continuing into the more advanced practices. It is also helpful for more advanced practitioners to review these valuable contemplations to renew their commitment.

Paperback and Kindle versions are available from Amazon.com and other sources.
