Call to Action for DACA Youth

The clock continues to tick away toward the formal expiration of legal protection for approximately 700,000 young undocumented immigrants. On January 22nd, Congress passed a short-term spending bill that will fund the govern-ment through February 8th, however, the bill did not include protections for Dreamers. Without a solution DACA youth will fall out of status and lose their ability to go to school, serve in the military, and work legally. As Catholics we are called to stand in solidarity with Dreamers by urging our lawmakers to work towards a bipartisan solution for these young people. While Catholic social teaching on migration recognizes and respects the sovereignty of each nation to regulate its borders, this right must be balanced with the right of vulnerable migrants to access protection. Please take this critical time before February 8 to call your representative and senators to pass a clean Dream Act (S.1615/H.R.3440), which should only includes security measures that are balanced, proportionate, and humane. Call your representative: 1-888-496-3502 Call your senators: 1-888-410-0619 (Call twice to reach both senators - Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy) Here is a sample script, but please share your personal concerns and experiences: “As a person of faith, I believe in protecting the dignity of every human being, particularly that of children and young adults including those who are undocumented. I urge you to work with all deliberate speed to find a bipartisan solution for a clean Dream Act that includes a path to citizenship. I ask you to reject any proposals that threaten family-based immi-gration or seek to undermine protections for unaccompanied children. A solution for Dreamers is long overdue. As my elected official in Congress, I call on you to help ensure that a fair and just solution is found before February 8th that will allow legal protection to these young people."

TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The Gospel stories these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today’s account shows some of the strain or adjust-ment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and pos-sessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. His disciples don’t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Jesus is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Job experienced months of misery and troubled nights (Job 7:1-4, 6-7).

Psalm — Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted (Psalm 147). Second Reading — I have become all things to all, to save at least some (1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23). Gospel — Jesus cured many who were sick with various diseases (Mark 1:29-39).

Pope Francis’ February Intention
