Twenty-eight Sunday in Ordinary Time October 12-13, 2019

A Note from Our Pastor,

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand where it gives light to all

in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heav-enly Father.”

Jesus’s words in verses 14-16 of St. Matthew’s Gospel were put into practice recently at St. Agatha School by Jess LaFlamme, a seventh-grade student. This story was aired on CBS Channel 4 news with newscaster David Wade this past week, and it has been rebroadcast on other news stations, and is all over the internet and social media. The impetus for this was an assignment from the Middle School Religion Teacher Ms. Victoria Perez who asked her students to think seriously about what they wanted their legacy to be after they had left St. Agatha School. Jess LaFlamme decided to put inside the lockers of all her classmates a sticky note indicating 2 positive characteris-tics, 2 qualities she admired about each classmate, all without revealing her own identity. When they opened their lockers, her classmates were very surprised and felt very affirmed by what they read about themselves on those notes. By process of elimination they figured out that Jess had to have been the one who pulled off such a great act of kindness, and each of them in turn wrote a sticky note in-dicating what they admired about Jess, and they posted those notes inside her locker. Jess certainly let her light shine and in so doing she helped ignite another great burst of light from her classmates.

Another saying of Jesus also comes to mind. In Luke 7:45 our Lord states, “A good person out of the store of good-ness in his or her heart produces good.” This news story makes clear that there is a whole lot of goodness in the hearts of our Middle School students at St. Agatha School. Kudos to them, to their families, and to the principal, teachers, and staff of St. Agatha School for providing the kind of fertile soil from which such acts of goodness and kindness can blossom.

On another level, we should not be too surprised about this. After all, this is what a community of faith rooted in Jesus Christ should be expected to produce. Listening at-tentively to God’s word in the Scriptures and receiving Christ’s very Body and Blood in the Eucharist at weekend Mass and, for some of us, even on a daily basis, should draw forth from the hearts of each one of us similar acts of kindness. May the inspiration we receive from Jess and her classmates and the grace of Jesus Christ make it so.

To view the news story, please check out the St. Agatha Parish or St. Agatha School website.

Have a blessed week!

Fr. Palardy

This week’s Second Collection for the Holy Father and Missionary Efforts

This week’s second collection will support the Holy Father’s “Peter’s Pence” collection that provides funds for emergency and disaster relief. This collection will also provide support to The Catholic University of America (CUA) that educates priests and lay people for ministry and for the Inner City Parishes of the Archdiocese of Boston. Your generosity will assist the Holy Fa-ther as well as the various missionary efforts at home and abroad. For more information, go to: 1) www.usccb.org/ppc, 2) www.cua.edu and 3) www.BostonCatholic.org

Next week’s Second Collection for the World Mission Sunday

NEXT WEEKEND we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Pope Francis invites the entire Church to support mission dio-ceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin American and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve the world’s most vulnerable communities. Please keep the Pope’s missions in your prayers and be generous in next week’s collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

The Parish received this appreciative note from NPH USA this week:

“The greatest gift we offer our children when they enter our home is a sense of security and hope. Security that they will always have a place to lay their head at night, security that they will not have to worry about their next

meal, security that they have a family that loves and provides for them. Hope for a brighter future, hope that they can over-come the obstacles of their past, hope that they can grow up and achieve their dreams.

At NPH it is our mission to provide vulnerable children with that sense of security and hope through our childcare, medical, and educational programs. On September 28th and 29th the mission of NPH came to life through the outpouring of sup-port and love from St. Agatha’s Parish.

We cannot begin to thank the St. Agatha’s community enough for ensuring our children have hope for a brighter future. We are touched beyond words with over $5,000 in financial sup-port to our NPH University Scholarship Program. This is enough to send one of our students to University for a full year, allowing them to achieve their dreams and break the cycle of poverty from which they come.

On behalf of our children, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”—Tempie Thompson, Elizabeth Caletka, & Casey Rector of the NPH USA Team, Mid/Atlantic/Northeast Region

THEME: We are Euchar istic people. We live in praise and thanksgiving

Listen carefully to the Gospel of this week. What image in this story strikes you most forcefully? What word or phrase caught your ear?

Gospel : Lk 17:11-19

As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” And when he saw them, he said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.”

Pastoral Planning October 13 ~ Twenty-eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time

A holiday weekend in New England is, of itself, a good rea-son to give thanks. Think beyond this colorful world God gives us. Recall those times when God carried you through a difficult time of sickness, death of a loved one, employment concerns, or even just a difficult day. Recall the lepers in to-day’s gospel. All were made clean, but only one expressed gratitude. Take a moment today to thank God for the many times you were carried/comforted through life’s difficulties.

In the past we have talked about our Stewardship responsibilities as members of a Catholic community being similar to a tripod. The three legs of the tripod are time, talent and treasure. Next weekend the Annual Report will be included as an insert in the Bulletin and the following week we will begin our Grand Annual Appeal. So it would seem natural to focus on the “treasure” por-tion of the tripod. However, since those processes are very famil-iar to everyone and the vital importance of your financial support of the parish is a frequent topic in this column, let’s take a few moments to focus on the other two legs of this tripod whose im-portance is sometimes not emphasized enough. If a parish like St. Agatha’s is going to fulfill its mission, it is heavily dependent upon all of us being willing to share whatever time and talents we have. So over these next few weeks as you hear about the “treasure” leg of the tripod, please consider ways that you can use your other gifts of your time and your talents to enrich the life of the parish community. There are many ways to become involved —or become more involved—in the many activities which occur. In addition to the need for people to share of their time by being Lectors or Eucharistic Ministers or Ushers or members of the choir at weekend liturgies, there are many different ministries always in need of volunteers such as being a catechist, helping out in the basketball program, joining the Outreach Committee, the Hospitality Committee or the Arts and Environment Committee. Or perhaps you have a particular skill such as sewing or a trade such as carpentry. All of these—and many others—are ways that you can not only use your talents and invest your time, but also spend enjoyable time meeting and working with other wonderful parishioners. Give it a try—you won’t regret it.

As you can see below, we exceeded out Weekly Offertory target. Hopefully this trend will continue into the fall and winter. Thank

you for your generosity. Jack Riley

FEATURED WEEKLY READING Boys and girls of all ages are invited to register for St. Agatha Parish Basketball. Sign-ups will be held from 6:00–8:00 pm in the gym on October 15. Open to all parishioners and students of St. Agatha School, the program is divided into age groups from Kindergarten through High School. The In-House program runs all day on Saturday and on Sunday afternoon. The fee is $75 per child with a maximum charge of $150 per family. Travel

teams are an additional fee—more info will be at the sign-ups.

Our goal is to teach basketball skills in a fun environment while learning to compete with good sportsmanship. The program is extremely popular, and capacity at some grade levels is reached quickly. So it is important to attend the sign-up, as late registra-tions are accepted on a space-available basis only.

We are also in need of volunteers to help coordinate the pro-gram and coach our many in-house and travel teams. If you have an interest in helping, please speak to any one of the Sports Advisory Board members at the Registration night or call Jack Riley at the Rectory at 617-698-2439, ext. 103 or e-mail [email protected].

THE WEEKLY UPDATE

Last week and this week our readings are concretely and squarely about Faith! Last week we heard faith even if it is the size of the tiniest, most insignificant seeds found in the Middle East—that is the mustard seed—is powerful.

Today, we read of Naaman, a leper and commander of the army of the king of Syria. He comes to the prophet Elisha to ask for healing—Elisha tells him rather dismissively that he needs to take a bath in the Jordan River. Naaman grows an-gry at Elisha’s simple instructions. Fortunately for Naaman, his own servants challenged him—“if you were told to do something extraordinary, you would have.” Naaman con-sents and dips himself in the Jordan. He is miraculously healed by the simple, humble act.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus heals ten lepers—only one returns to give thanks to God. Jesus says to the leper, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.”

All three stories tell us that often it is a humble act which leads to faith and faith moves us to discover the power of God’s presence and love for us. Our faith, St. Paul tells us in today’s second reading, is in Jesus who laid down his life for us and has risen from the dead. Pope Benedict XVI recalls Jesus reveals the “superabundance of God’s love”:

–the healing of the ten lepers

the feeding of the five-thousand

the miracle of Cana—water into wine—the finest wine

and Jesus’ own resurrection and the sending of the Holy Spirit—who is Love.

We are asked to look for God in the simple, the ordinary, the everyday to discover the God who invites us to go forth, without fear, for he is with us.

As Fr. Palardy and Jack Riley wrote in last week’s bulletin, we are preparing to implement our new hardcover combina-tion missal/hymnal. Titled Gather, the new book contains all three years of the cycle of readings for Sundays and Holy

Days. These readings are found at the back of the book, and are numbered by reading, rather than by page. These reading numbers will be posted on the hymn boards, and announced at the beginning of Mass, as well.

In addition, the front flyleaf of the book contains many of the assembly responses for Mass, including the Glory to God, the Creed, the Eucharistic Acclamations and the invitation to Communion. You can see a sample of the new Gather books near the main doors of the church. We look forward to using these beautiful new worship resources beginning the week-end of November 16-17.

We are happy to have several volunteers and divide up the commitment. As well volunteers are needed to monitor the hallways of the school during sessions from 4:00–5:00 pm. Hall monitors are stationed on each level of the school during session time to monitor and assure a safe environment for the children while attending Faith For-mation. Contact the Faith Formation Office to volunteer or if you have any questions, thank you!

This week we are asking the children to do some re-search on saints, pick their favorite saint and draw a picture of them. We will display their pictures in the Gathering Space in time for “All Saints Day”, November 1.
