  • St. Agatha School — Annual Report July 1, 2019-June 30, 2020Well, I’m back from my quarantine and still feeling fit as a fiddle, thank God. I missed seeing you all, and especially missed celebrating Sunday Masses with you the past 2 weekends, including the Mass of Remembrance last weekend for our parishioners who passed to the Lord since last November. I am especially grateful to our two senior priests Fr. Pat McLaughlin and Fr. Tom Powers for “carrying the ball” while I was away.

As a follow-up to last week’s bulletin, this week we present the Annual Financial Report for St. Agatha School.

Every household registered in our parish should have received by email a very brief questionnaire regarding the celebration of Christmas here at St. Agatha’s this year. We ask that folks reply by this Tuesday November 17th. Please do take the time to read and respond to this questionnaire, because it will be of enormous assistance in our preparations for the Masses on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, given the unique circumstances that the requirement of social distancing places upon us this year. If, for some reason, you have not yet received this questionnaire by email, it is available on our parish website.

A Mass of the Anointing of the Sick will take place next Saturday November 21st at 11am here in the Upper Church. For those who would like to receive the Sacrament but are not yet comfortable in coming into the Church, we’ll be offering the Sacrament of the Sick to people in their cars in our parking lot after the Mass inside concludes. We were hoping to be able to provide box lunches as people leave the Mass of Anointing, but there is not enough time now for placing the lunch order. So,

we’ll have to be content with the Sacrament of the Sick and the Eucharistic Bread of Life for this year!

Next Sunday November 22 at 4pm will be the annual Milton Interfaith Clergy Association (MICA) Thanks For Giving service. This year our parish honorees are Ann Louise Sullivan, Deacon Dan Sullivan, and Noel Schaub for the manifold ways they have served and continue to serve St. Agatha Parish. The Milton Times will have their picture and a description of their service and that of the members of other houses of worship in Milton being honored this year. To be able to be present for this event which will be in virtual format this year, the following is the link to register for this event: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_1c-ZPRKtQ2uRFuk12XNSCQ. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. This link can also be found on our parish website.

At our 2 Thanksgiving Masses this year (Wednesday Nov. 25 at 7pm, and Thursday Nov. 26 at 9am) instead of collecting food for St. Matthew’s Food Pantry in Dorchester, we ask our parishioners to donate supermarket gift cards. The gift cards can be donated at the Thanksgiving Masses or at any time before Thanksgiving by being dropped into the small green collection baskets in the Church or dropped off or mailed to the rectory. Gift cards in $10 denominations are preferred.

Have a blessed, safe, and healthy week!

    Fr. Palardy

We’re pleased to present to you in this week’s Bulletin the Annual Report for St. Agatha School for Fiscal Year 2020 which ended on June 30, 2020. Also included is the proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2021 which began on July 1, 2020 and continues until June 30, 2021.

As was true of the Parish this was certainly a year like no other for St. Agatha School. The students and faculty were enjoying a tranquil and productive school year until the Covid-19 pandemic struck in March. From that point on the school year was an endurance test for all. Through the often heroic efforts of our staff, the support, patience and loyalty of families, and the hard work of the students, we were able to complete the last part of the academic year fully remotely. It was truly a community effort. The disruption experienced by the students was mirrored by the disruption to our finances. Most notably, as you can see from the attached Annual Report financials, was the drastic reduction in fundraising. It was necessary to immediately and indefinitely suspend the weekly Bingo games that resulted in a significant shortfall in that line item of almost $86,000. Likewise there was a huge drop in family fundraising. Although the Auction Committee valiantly conducted a virtual event in the Spring which did very well under the circumstances, there was a fundraising shortfall of $97,349.

Although the school building itself was closed from March through much of the summer which saved on expenses for

things such as utilities, maintenance and custodial service, teachers faithfully continued their work with their students. Compensating staff for their work would not have been possible without the Payroll Protection Program created by the federal CARES Act. The school applied for and received a loan of $329,100 which is eligible for 100% loan forgiveness. Since we have met the applicable criteria, full loan forgiveness is expected in the current fiscal year.

Planning for Fiscal Year 2021 was a monumental challenge since there was much uncertainty about the enrollment level. The initial budget approved by the Finance Council was based on an enrollment of 240 students. Once the decision was made that the School would provide full-time on-site learning the enrollment dramatically increased throughout the late summer and into September. Although there was a slight increase in this year’s tuition rate in order to balance the budget at the beginning of the year, this increase in enrollment by almost 100 students increased the school’s anticipated tuition revenue by over $700,000. Although additional staff needed to be hired and there were increased expenses for technology enhancements and for cleaning and sanitizing the school, this enrollment jump was welcome news and bodes well for the future of the School.

MASS OF ANOINTING Saturday, November 21, 11:00am

    in the Upper Church

Please join our parish in celebrat-ing the healing power of the Spirit of Jesus Christ that comes to us in

    the Sacrament of the Sick.

We welcome those who are in need of Jesus’ healing power as well as those who want to pray in a special

way for our suffering brothers and sisters.

For those who would like to receive the Sacrament but are not yet comfortable coming into the

Church, we’ll be offering the Sacrament of the Sick to people in their cars in our parking lot after

    the Mass inside concludes.

  • THEME: Christ calls us to use our gifts for the Reign of God. As you listen once again to this familiar parable, what caught your ear in it today? What image or action from the reading lingers in your memory now?

Gospel : Matthew 25:14-30 Jesus told his disciples this parable: “A man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one— to each according to his ability. Then he went away.

“After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, ‘Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’”

For the two week period of November 15–28, the Vigil Candle above the Tabernacle will be lit in memory of Heather Anne Fleming. Donated by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. John S. Fleming. May the light of God’s love surround you.

    Pastoral Planning

November 15 ~ Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

God has given each of us different gifts. It is not the num-ber of gifts that matter. What matters is how each of us uses the gifts God has given. God never demands from us what we do not have; but God does want us to use to the full the gifts which we do possess. Today’s parable tells us that whatever talent/saintly quality we have, be it little or great, we must place it at the service of God. Are you putting your gifts at the service of God and others? Ask for the grace to be confident and generous with your time and talents.

Weekend Mass Schedule to Change Sunday, November 29th

In order to accommodate the number of parishion-ers attending the Sunday Masses in person, we will be adding an additional Mass on Sunday mornings. Since we will be sanitizing the Church between each Mass, the Mass times will change slightly.

Starting November 29th, the new Mass schedule will be at 7:30am, 9:30am and 11:30am on Sunday. There will be NO change to the 4:30pm Mass on Saturday or the 5:00pm Mass on Sunday. Please check the bulletin if you have scheduled a Mass intention for the current Mass times.

This change is contingent on current COVID-19 protocols staying in place. Please check our website for the most current instructions. Thank you.

Next week’s Second Collection for the Retired Religious Sisters Next weekend the Archdiocese will take up the Collection for Retired Sisters. Since 1988, the collection has provided needed financial support for religious communities who have served the Archdiocese of Boston as educators and health care and social service providers. Please give generously in recognition of the Sisters’ years of dedicated service.

For more information, please contact the Delegate for Reli-gious at 617-746-5637.

Grand Annual Update The Grand Annual Appeal is off to a good start. Thus far 272 households have contributed $117,101. As a reminder, our budgeted target is $170,000, but it is our hope that we will exceed that number to offset the decline in Weekly Offertory revenue. Thank you for your generosity.

Driveway Choir at St. Agatha’s On November 8, members of the Traditional and Con-temporary Choirs had the opportunity to sing together for the first time since Covid restrictions went into effect in March. Choir singing, as well as congregational singing, has been banned in the Archdiocese of Boston during the pandemic because of concerns about the spread of the coronavirus. St. Agatha choir rehearsals are currently held online, but singers cannot hear one another in real time because of latency—the delay caused by distance and varying internet speeds.

Looking forward to creating harmonies once more, choir members drove into the parking lot behind St. Agatha School under sunny skies last Sunday. Marlborough resi-dents Bryce and Kathryn Denney, creators of the Drive-way Choir, gave each singer a sanitized microphone. When it was time to sing, each singer’s voice was blend-ed through a sound mixer and broadcast via a short-range FM transmitter, which singers could hear through their car radios. The result was similar to a “normal” choir re-hearsal; singers could hear themselves and each other, through the radio, as they were singing—something we all have missed these last months. The choirs sang a few selections for Advent and Christmas, as well as some oth-er well-loved songs, such as “Surely the Presence of the Lord” and “Lord, When You Came to the Seashore.” Recordings from the event will be used for future livestreamed Masses from the parish.

Music director Julie Fay learned about the Denneys and the Driveway Choir through an article in the New York Times on October 7. Noticing that the choirs featured in the article were from New England, she contacted the Denneys online and asked if they would be willing to come to St. Agatha’s. They graciously agreed, and it was a wonderful afternoon of music-making. The choirs are grateful to Bryce and Kathryn, as well as to Fr. Palardy, for making it possible for us to sing together again.

If reading online, these links provide more information about the Denneys’ Driveway Choir: The New York Times: A Choir Finds a Way to Sing. Just Ignore the Steering Wheel, Driveway Choir website, The Milton Times: Making Music All the Safe Ways.

Please allow extra time when arriving for Mass. The doors will open 20 minutes before Mass begins. Due to capacity constraints, the doors will close 5 minutes before Mass. Thank you for your patience. Public Mass times are: Saturday 4:30pm, Sunday 8:00am, 11:00am & 5:00pm and daily public Mass at 9:00am.
