READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY

March 1, 2020

Christ be Our Light

Going the Extra Mile!

“Going the extra mile” can make all the difference in the world! It seems to be one of the sugges-

tions in today’s readings with the effect being a difference within family, work, friendship, play,

etc. However, what exactly does “going the extra mile” mean?

I think that most of us immediately know the answer and have very often felt ourselves pushed

to our limit and then decide to PUSH OURSELVES REALLY HARD to keep going because it

is important to do so. Sometimes it’s just that we are exhausted and yet someone needs us to

get something for them e.g. medicine at the pharmacy or a needed item from the store. Some-

times it’s more subtle like someone we know needing a listening ear or perhaps a phone call or

unasked-for help with some task - each at a time when our “giving tank” is very low on love

and energy!

I think of the time in the Gospel when Jesus was tired, as were the apostles and he suggested

that they go to the farther shore to rest a while, in other words...“Take a break” from all the

people constantly wanting to hear and touch him. When they got to the other side, they saw

hundreds of people already waiting for them on the shore. Jesus, as tired as he was, feeling

sorry for them, said they were like sheep without a shepherd and immediately had them sit

down and started to teach them. He was “going the extra mile”!

Love trumps everything – often even what seems just, lawful, necessary, fitting, right or holy.

Love is our highest calling and obligation. However, and most importantly, love is also a per-

sonal choice. It looks at all angles and based on our knowledge and perspective as well as our

intelligence and inner strength will guide the decision when to go the extra distance. Some-

times, what seems like the sacrifice that should be made, on second thought, cannot be done

BECAUSE love demands attention in another important area of our lives at the same time.

An example might be someone who asks for a ride to the store and we may be very willing to

do so BUT someone else is waiting to be picked up from school or for an appointment. As we

all know, sometimes things can be juggled, but not always, nor is it always feasible to do so –

even for our own health or emotional needs.

Daily prayer helps to keep our vision clear – asking the Holy Spirit to show us the way and

really listening for the answer. With prayer and God by our side, the YES or NO of walking

that extra mile will be based only on LOVE!

7th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…”

MATTHEW 5:44

Love your enemies, easier said than done, no doubt. But, remember, the foun-

dation of stewardship is prayer. When we are in close communication with

God, it opens our heart and it turns our attention away from “me” and moves it

towards God and others. It allows us to have a little more empathy for “our en-

emy”. When we pray for others, even “our enemies”, maybe it softens their

hearts as well.

host who will spend the night and assist in the morning. Sacred Heart will assist on March 23rd
