… the next generation student system is coming!
Technical ArchitectureThe technology stack of core web service technologies that was chosen to support the Kuali Student service-oriented architecture and enable infrastruc-ture swappability is listed below:
Features:
• Standards-based, not product-based architecture
– Allows flexibility as open source products and product space evolves
• Fully open source reference implementation
– Will run “out of the box” with no cost
– Standards-based components enable implementations to plug in third party, open source, or in-house products if desired/needed
What is community-source development?Kuali Student follows a collaborative approach to product development. Distinct from open-source development that solicits input from anyone, community-source development limits participation to a group of committed contributors. The Kuali Student team currently includes members and resources from the Founder and Partner institutions.
The Kuali Foundation ConnectionKuali Student is being developed under the umbrella of the Kuali Foundation (www.kuali.org). This affiliation allows the project to leverage and contribute to the Foundation’s community of interest, adopt established licensing processes, benefit from existing communications and technical expertise, and contribute to Kuali’s full suite of community source applications for higher-education institutions.
FAQs 1. Is it still possible to participate as a Founder or a Partner?
We are open to discussing opportunities with any institution that would like to make a significant contribution.
2. When will Kuali Student be ready to be implemented? Kuali Student is scheduled to be released as modules complete development. Release 1 includes the Learning Unit Management and Person Identity modules in the fourth quarter of 2009.
3. How much will it cost to implement Kuali Student? Kuali Student will be available as open source and has no associated licens-ing fees. The cost to implement will be institution specific depending on which components are adopted and the existing infrastructure. The Founder institutions will be implementing the modules as they are developed and will be sharing their experience with others.
Like any implementation of this size and with such a radical new vision for student service delivery, the costs will be substantial and felt through the institution. For example, one of the founder institutions is budgeting over $1M per year over four years.
4. As a product vendor, how can I get involved to ensure that my product will integrate with Kuali Student? The Commercial Affiliate Program will be an essential part of the Kuali Student sustainability approach and the community of interest. In the near future as our project progresses, we will be encouraging you to contact us to join our program to ensure your voice is heard during development, implementation and sustainment of Kuali Student.
5. How will Kuali Student integrate with my current student information system?Kuali Student is a modular, open-source, standards-based architecture. This combined with our services contracts will allow institutions to adopt the modules you require and integrate with existing systems.

Architecture
Why are we building a next generation student system?• Many student systems don’t meet current needs.
• Institutions have increasingly complex needs.
• Vendor solutions may not be the answer.
• Development of in-house systems is challenging, and institutional resources to continue developing systems are in decline.
• Collaboration and open source systems development works.
• There is a demand for a flexible, scalable, cost-effective student system solution.
Timeline
Founders & PartnersThe Kuali Student consortium consists of seven Founder institutions:
Three Partner institutions are contributing significant resources and expertise:
Collectively, these institutions are contributing more than $40 million over a 5-year period. In addition, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is contributing $2.5 million during the initial 2.5 years of the project.
We estimate $50 million will be required to fund the Kuali Student project over its five year development timeline.
What is Kuali Student?• A next generation student system currently under development.
• Offers a flexible, scalable, cost-effective system that can be configured to meet the business requirements of any higher education institution.
• Features a student-centric design to help students, faculty, and institutions deal with the dynamic learning environment.
• Integrates with existing commercial and open source applications due to its modular, open source, standards-based design.
• Developed over the next five years by a consortium of universities following a community-source development approach.
• Released by module and distributed through open source license.
• Sustained through a community of interest including universities, international institutions and vendors.
Product Description Kuali Student will be a modular, open source, standards-based next generation student system delivered through service-oriented architecture and web services.
• It will include eight modules:
– Learning Unit Management (a.k.a. Curriculum Management)
– Person Identity
– Enrollment
– Program Audit and Evaluation
– Student Financials
– Admissions
– Financial Aid
– Scheduling
• Our standards-based, service oriented architecture allows you to implement as many modules as you need – one or all eight!
• Next generation Concierge capabilities are integrated with the modules to support the user and enhance their overall experience.
Complementary ModulesFuture Partners are encouraged to define projects to develop software modules that are complementary to the core system, including:
