Welcome to The Guthrie School
At The Guthrie School, students and teachers love and respect learning. We strive to help our students make connections
and develop relationships with people, concepts, and subject matter. As our students advance from pre-school, they develop
a support group of peers and teachers in an environment that will nurture their love of learning. At The Guthrie School,
students are encouraged to take risks and try new things. Our educational goal is to develop confident and capable students
with the skill set required to not only excel academically, but also be leaders and role models in their community.
The Guthrie School core values of leadership, integrity, friendship, and service are pledged, discussed, and lived every
day. Each classroom begins their day with a morning meeting to organize the day’s events and build a strong sense
of community. The Guthrie School provides opportunities for our students to strengthen these values through tools for
outstanding academic achievement, physical fitness, artistic development, performance, and community involvement
and responsibility.
We bring together enthusiastic teachers and a dynamic curriculum to offer our students the best opportunity to excel. In
addition to our breadth of curricula, we utilize the Socratic method to develop speaking skills, enhance logical argument
processes, and encourage open communication in our students. Harkness tables provide our students the inviting and
accepting environment they deserve to express their ideas and engage in a dialogue with their teachers and peers.
We believe in providing an environment inside and outside of the classroom that promotes and develops traditional values.
The Guthrie School is designed to accelerate our students’ learning and guide them to reach their potential. Our educational
philosophy centers on providing a comprehensive, dialogical approach to develop confident, well-rounded students who are
competitive leaders of their community. In addition to setting rigorous academic standards, we provide a foundation and
framework for meeting those expectations. Study skills and proper work habits prepare our students for future success.
Our dedicated and experienced teachers engage students on a personal level and are devoted to refining the learning
process to maximize our students’ potential. We believe that learning is a collaborative process, and our students are
encouraged to interact with their learning environment. Not only are our students held to rigorous academic standards, but
they are also expected to be compassionate, positive, and exceptional leaders in their community.

About GuthrieThe Guthrie School core values of leadership, integrity, friendship and

mathematics, humanities, science, foreign language, physical education, and more.

We are committed to shaping the leaders of tomorrow by fostering a lifelong love of learning. We believe

Our Difference Our Curriculum
The Guthrie School offers courses in literature
and language arts, mathematics, science,
social studies, foreign language, writing, fine
arts, critical thinking, and physical education.
Our academic programs are developed through
collaboration of teachers and administration,
and we review the curriculum annually. The
Guthrie School program is designed to foster high
academic standards, work ethic, organization,
leadership, and pride in quality work. Our faculty
and administration oversee these efforts and
encourage communication and collaboration
between student, school and parents.
The Guthrie School is different in many ways.
Our school’s foundation is built upon our unique
collaborative teaching method, our focus on
traditional values, and the importance we place
on the quality of our faculty. Moreover, we foster a
strong community environment in which students
develop and excel. With this understanding in
mind, we developed a list of the benefits of your
child attending the Guthrie School. These benefits
are unique in our area, filling a need in North
Dallas neighborhoods that has not yet been met.
In a simple statement, the difference we provide
is our understanding of what is missing in other
educational environments. It is this unique insight
that enabled us to prepare an educational and
family environment that is unparalleled in DFW or
other North Texas cities.

Socratic and Harkness Method
*We strongly believe in the instruction of foreign language throughout the elementary grades as well as an early emphasis on Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Each child, beginning in Pre-K, will study either Chinese or Spanish as their foreign language.
Developed at Phillips Exeter Academy, The Harkness Method is used by many of the most prestigious
schools in the country. Courses are taught around a large oval table, where students sit with their
teachers. This method encourages discursive and Socratic learning. The Guthrie School has adopted
this method to challenge our students and teach them invaluable discussion and debate skills. Around
the Harkness table, Guthrie classrooms transform into personal and expressive havens.
Under The Guthrie School direction and Harkness Instruction, our students learn to listen to, speak
about, and accept new ideas. The Harkness Table is the centerpiece of the classrooms and of the
learning experience. Around the Harkness Table, the teacher’s role is to guide discussion, encourage
critical thinking, and help develop individual opinions.
Other Unique Benefits of the Guthrie School
1. Small classes – average class size is 15 students

Fine Arts
Elementary ProgramsKindergarten-5th
Art: Beginning in pre-kindergarten, students begin a developmentally appropriate visual arts program
in which they explore various styles, mediums, and methods of making art. They learn terminology and
techniques as well as individual and creative thinking. Students are also introduced to the fascinating
world of art history and art appreciation, and are provided multiple opportunities to display their work and
submit to art shows.
Music: All students at The Guthrie School participate in music class. Beginning in pre-kindergarten,
students are introduced to basic elements of music through singing, rhythm, movement, and
instrumentation. As the students move through the curriculum, they are challenged to learn about music
history, theory, and techniques. At various times during the year, students will put on musical presentations
to showcase what they have learned.

Social Studies Science
The social studies curriculum takes Guthrie
students on a journey, from learning about their
community, to discovering the history of their
state and country, to exploring far away countries.
Students not only study the past but are also
taught to consider how the past affects the present.
Grade level curricula are connected through a
common theme of citizenship. Social studies
lessons are enhanced through reading, class
discussions, simulations, field trips, interviews, and
research. In addition to studying history, geography
skills and activities are emphasized and integrated
into the curriculum at every level.
The overall goal of the science curriculum is for
students to develop an understanding of the
world and its processes, expand their conceptual
framework, and develop an appreciation for the
role that science plays in their lives. Students learn
the impact that their decisions have on the world
and are encouraged to consider new perspectives
on how the world works. Students are not only
taught concrete science skills but are taught to
question, hypothesize, research, and support their
opinions. Additionally, at each grade level, a variety
of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Arts, and Math) activities support development of
spatial skills, problem solving, and critical thinking.
Physical Education
The primary goal in our physical education
program is to instill a love of activity. Areas of focus
include: motor development, sports skills, hand-eye
coordination, team work, and fitness and health.

Kindergarten–First
Second–Third
Mathematics: A variety of curricula are used at
the Kindergarten and First Grade levels including
textbooks, workbooks, manipulatives, and “real-
world” learning materials. The emphasis is on
building a strong foundation in number concepts
and problem solving. It is expected that by the
end of first grade, students will have mastery of:
numeration and place value to 1,000, addition,
subtraction, beginning graphing, basic fractions,
spatial relationships, introduction to geometry,
standard measurement, counting money, time to
the minute, regrouping, borrowing and sequencing.
Reading/Language Arts: The Guthrie School
language arts curriculum includes phonics,
reading, writing, handwriting, spelling, grammar,
and genre activities. An emphasis is placed on
learning to read at the correct level with fluency,
accuracy, expression, and comprehension.
Comprehension skills are enhanced through
study of story elements, vocabulary, drawing
connections, and “summarizing.” Writing
lessons promote skills in grammar, mechanics,
punctuation, and sentence development.
Mathematics: The four basic operations are
taught in-depth and reinforced through the year
with guided practice and spiral review. In addition,
students are introduced to challenging word
problems and abstract algorithms. Concepts
covered include: place value to 10,000, addition,
subtraction, estimation, multiplication and division
tables, multiple digit multiplication and division,
measurement, mass and weight, capacity, money,
fractions, time, graphing and data analysis,
probability, geometry, area, and perimeter.
Reading/Language Arts: A variety of curricula are
used to transition students from learning-to-read
to reading-to-learn. In addition to reading, writing,
handwriting, spelling, grammar, and genre study,
students are introduced to advanced reading
skills through peer and teacher conferencing.
Students are introduced to novel study, culminating
in reports and presentations to showcase their
knowledge and understanding. An emphasis is
placed on writing by building strong organizational
skills, mechanics, and structure.
Ava Markowitz
It is their genuine enthusiasm and concern over [our son’s]
development that we have greatly appreciated through the
years. They truly have always given their time and nurtured
his love of learning, confidence, curiosity, and character
during these years, which has made a huge impact.

Fourth–Fifth Grade
Mathematics: Building upon the foundation in
computation and problem solving skills, fourth and
fifth graders develop advanced skills in mental
calculation and operations with whole numbers.
Students also learn necessary pre-algebra skills
such as: operations with fractions, perimeter
and area of regular and irregular shapes, ratios,
decimals, conversion of measurements, volume,
averages, coordinate graphs, angles, triangles,
quadrilaterals, probability, percentage, and rate.
Reading/Language Arts: Students in fourth
and fifth grade expand on their knowledge of
basic reading skills to further explore reading,
language arts, and writing. Through genre study,
class novels, and reader’s workshop, students
are provided the opportunity to build passion for
reading and strong comprehension and critical-
thinking skills. In Writer’s Workshop, students
will build upon their strong organizational skills
to write narrative, expository and research
pieces. By working through the writing process
of brainstorming, drafting, editing, revising, and
publishing, students learn to master the creative
expression of ideas based upon a well-grounded
understanding of necessary structure and
organization. Students will also build upon their
spelling and vocabulary skills through introduction
to Greek and Latin roots.

developing confidence in one’s
mathematical ability at an early
age is critical to success in the
middle and high school years. It
is always best to be ahead
in math.

The highly popular Critical
Thinking classes have three
levels: lower, middle, and upper
and are designed specifically for
students who want to improve

Enrichment F.A.Q.Got Questions? We’ve got answers!
Q: What is Guthrie Gifted Enrichment?
A: Guthrie Gifted Enrichment is an enrichment and tutoring program located in Plano/Allen, TX, that provides
advanced academic classes in multiple subject areas. Our goal is to inspire a student’s love of learning and
challenge them to meet their academic potential.
Q: What are your hours?
A: Guthrie Gifted Enrichment holds classes at The Guthrie School Monday–Friday from 2:15–6:30 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday hours are 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.
Q: What feedback will I get about my child’s progress?
A: We believe that parent, student, and teachers are a team, and to that end, we encourage steady, open
communication. All student work will be graded, reviewed, corrected, and returned for students and parents to
go over.
Q: How to pay?
A: Tuition is calculated based on the number of hours your student will be attending class per week. Tuition is
paid by the semester, and payments may be made by cash or check.
Q: Are classes held over student holidays?
A: A calendar is published prior to the start of each semester. Tuition is calculated with these holidays in mind,
and you are not charged for dates we are closed.
Q: What Curriculum do you use?
A: We use a variety of curricula to best serve our students. We keep up to date with Texas standards and pull
from varied sources to help meet our students’ individual needs.
Q: How does the curriculum compare to what is taught in
public schools?
A: Our curriculum intentionally overlaps with curriculum taught in both private and public schools. Our classes
are designed to teach depth of content and to develop problem solving skills. While the skills taught overlap, the
methods applied to teach our students vary and are designed to meet the needs of the students in the class.
30 For additional information call 972-596-6929 or visit GuthrieSchool.com
Q: How much work is assigned each class?
A: For each class, a student will take home on average 1.5-2.0 hours of homework per week. We advise
that homework be completed throughout the week rather than all in one night.
Q: What ages do you teach?
A: Guthrie Gifted Education serves students from Pre-Kindergarten through High School.
Q: What is the enrollment process??
A: The following steps are necessary:
• Complete new-student questionnaire: Every new family will receive a new student questionnaire
to be completed and submitted to the Director of Enrichment.
• Schedule an assessment appointment: Upon receipt of questionnaire, an assessment will
be scheduled.
• Assessment test:
• 30-45 min/subject
• $25.00 fee per subject (credited towards registration fee upon enrollment)
• Set course plan/schedule: Your student’s test results will be reviewed and discussed. A suggested
course plan will be presented based on their assessment results and academic goals.
• Complete enrollment/registration documents: Select class offerings at your student’s level that
are appropriate and meet their needs.
Q. How do I know what is the appropriate level for my son
and daughter?
A: We administer an assessment prior to your student beginning classes. Progress is continually
monitored for content understanding and mastery, and should it come to pass that their current level is no
longer meeting their needs, we will contact you regarding adjusting their schedule.
For additional information call 972-596-6929 or visit GuthrieSchool.com 31
Q: Switching classes?
A: As the year goes on, we understand that schedules change, and your student may need to switch
classes. To initiate switching classes, email the Director of Enrichment to receive a “Schedule Change
Request.” Once it has been verified that there is space available in the class you wish to switch to, you
will receive a Schedule Change Verification.
Q: Make-up classes?
A: Because class space is limited, we require advanced notice of absence in order to schedule a make
up class. Please notify the Director of Enrichment 24 hours ahead of time. In case of illness, please notify
the front office ASAP by calling 972-596-6929.
Q: What to do if running late?
A: If you are running late for class, please call 972-596-6929 to notify the front office.
Q: When can I register for next semester?
A: Schedules for upcoming semesters are released prior to the beginning of the new semester. We
encourage you to sign up early as class space is limited, and spaces do fill up quickly.

Guthrie Gives Program:
Instilling an early commitment to service in our students is important to The Guthrie School. Our
community regularly engages in a wide array of service projects during each academic year. During
this past year, we have donated to Attitudes and Attire, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting
personal growth for women seeking self-sufficiency, and to Evergreen Life Services, which provides
services and support to individuals with disabilities. In addition, the school staff, students, and families
have donated pennies, toys, food, and books to children, honored veterans, and shared our talents with
the elderly in our community.

received. Screening is not required through Pre-K, though it is recommended to promote a best-fit
environment.

child’s spot for the upcoming school year. Application and payment deadlines are published every

from the applicant’s current school; we will not accept forms sent by parents.
