Dear Founders Hall members,

First, I want you to know that we miss you all. When I feel frustrated by the coronavirus situation, I re-read the notes and cards you have sent. ey are uplifting and inspiring. ank you.

I wish you all well. Although the immediate, severe threat has subsided, a longer-term uncertainty has set in. Ongoing stress-reducing activities are more important than ever. I hope you have found activities that work for you in this regard.

As you may know, the staff and I have been working to develop a plan to re-open the building. Unfortunately, we determined that the health risk was more than we could bear at this time. erefore, our fall semester will consist of Zoom classes and activities on our patio.

e patio activities will be musical entertainment on Mondays (rain date: Tuesdays) and games/trivia on Fridays, all under tents and umbrellas. See page 15 for more information. If you have any pre-existing conditions or are at a higher risk, I urge you to be cautious about participating. We ask everyone to sign a waiver outlining the risks you are assuming and the rights you are giving up by attending. is waiver is inserted in this book.

Additionally, we have developed rules and practices that everyone is expected to follow while attending a patio event. ese are detailed on pages 16 and 17 of this book. Please read them carefully and save them for future reference.

We have put together a stimulating schedule of Zoom classes this fall. If you need help with your device in order to access Zoom, please call us. If you wish to take Zoom classes but don’t have the technology to do so, please call us. We plan to solve as many of these issues as we can so that all members who want to participate in Zoom classes are able to. And, please remember that these classes are only for Founders Hall members due to the expense of off ering them.

Registration for Fall 2020 will be similar to previous years, with an online option and a mail-in option. e online option saves signifi cant staff resources so I hope you will try that if you haven’t before.

If there is another member that you would like to reach out to, please let me know and I am happy to facilitate that connection, just like I did when the building was open. I don’t give out anyone’s contact information without their permission.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you outside on the patio in a few weeks. In the meantime, stay cool and carry on!

~ Grace

Art Program ~ on the Patio

Sponsored by the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation

Please see pages 16-17 for e Rules and What to Expect When You Arrive for Patio Events.

Luminosity in Art - Bringing Light Into Your Colored Pencil Drawings

Used to create the illusion of light coming from within the work of art, luminosity is an e! ect that directs the eye and adds de" nition, contrast and emphasis to speci" c objects, " gures or portions of a scene. Whether it is natural (sun, candle) or arti" cial (incandescent or # uorescent), deliberately-placed and accentuated lighting generates an emotional response in the observer of the work of art.

In this class, we will cover works by both old masters (Vermeer, da Vinci, Caravaggio, de La Tour) and contemporary artists whose works superbly utilize these e! ects. Students will then learn how to illuminate a chosen subject in their own colored pencil compositions through color, hue and value, be it by adding shine or glints to metallic or glass objects, or specular re# ection (sun glitter) on rippled water in landscape drawings or dew drops on plants. We will also touch on terminology (chiaroscuro, raking light), moonlit scenes, rays of sunlight through mist and tree branches, alpenglow, etc.

We will work with colored pencils on toned paper (grey or tan).

is in-person class will meet, weather permitting, on the Founders Hall patio. Social distancing and face masks will be required. Participants must bring and use ONLY their own supplies. e supply list will be forwarded to registered students.

Class participants will be limited to 8.

FOUNDERS HALL FALL 2020

Watercolor: Let’s Paint Like Monet!

French impressionist painters such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir advocated plein air painting, and much of their work was done outdoors in the di! used light of a large white umbrella. Claude Monet was an avid en plein air artist who deduced that to seize the closeness and likeness of an outside setting at a speci" c moment one had to be outside. So, join me to paint this rich, bright, glorious Fall season.

is class, which will meet on the Founders Hall Patio, is for advanced watercolorists only who must bring and use ONLY their own supplies (paper blocks, brushes, paint, palettes). Social distancing and face masks will be required.

Due to teaching restrictions: students must have completed Tina’s Intermediate Watercolor class or attended Advanced Watercolor classes.

Art Program ~ via Zoom

Art Nouveau-style Decorative Floral Border and Pattern Design

Characterized by its use of sinuous organic forms, Art Nouveau drew inspiration from natural structures, particularly the curved lines of plants and # owers to create elegant, modern designs.

While we will review master artists known for working in the Art Nouveau style (Klimt, Beardsley, Horta, Toulouse-Lautrec), this course will focus on the ornamental style of Alphonse Mucha. Students will learn how to analyze their preferred plant, vine or # ower, to stylize it using simple geometry, and then repeat, mirror and weave it into a continuous border design that can be used as a frame or decorative element on note cards or a variety of visual art projects (think wallpaper borders, ceramic # ower pots, tile, etc). With so much time at home, why not paint an Art Nouveau chair rail border around your kitchen?

Each student will need graph paper, tracing paper, a pencil with eraser, ruler, colored pencils or markers, scissors (or X-acto knife), removeable tape, photos of their favorite plant(s )(vine, branch or # ower), and a good dose of creative imagination!
