Ua Ao Hawai‘iWords by Larry Kimura Chant melody by Kalena Silva

Kau e ka wena o ke ao i ka lani

The announcement of dawn appears as a glowing streak upon the heavens,

He wekeweke i ka pö pilipuka

It is a narrow opening in the darkness heralding the day,

He ‘elele o ka poniponi hikina

It is a messenger of purple glimmer from the east.

Kau ke kähe‘a wana‘ao i ka ‘äla‘apapa

Streaks of red stain long cloud formations,

La‘i ana i luna o ke kükulu o ka lani lä

Reposing serenely upon the pillars holding up the heavens;

‘O ka‘u ia e huli alo nei i ka ulu ë

I turn to gaze upon this, focusing on growth and the rising of a new day,

‘Ae, ua ao ë.

Yes, day has arrived.

Hö mai lä kö mälamalama

Bestow upon us your radiant light

I ka honua nei i ka mauli ola

Here upon the earth, filled with the spirit of life.

Ua ao Hawai‘i ke ‘ölino nei

Hawai‘i is in the brightness of day, it shines, brilliant

Mai ka pi‘ina a ka welona a ka lä

From its boundaries from the east to the west.

Kähiko ‘ia i ka ‘ike manomano

It wears as its finery a myriad of knowledge,

Ka ‘ike köli‘u mai o kikilo mai

Of deep insight from the depths of antiquity.

‘O ka‘u nö ia ‘o ka pülama

My sole duty is to embrace and to cherish,

A pa‘a ma ka ipu o ka ‘ike ë.

So it may be firm in the repositories of enlightenment.

‘Ae, ua ao ë.

Yes, day has arrived.

He mele no Hawai‘i ua ao.

This is a poem for Hawai‘i which has seen the light of day.

Keynote AddressBorn in Buffalo, New York, Congressman Neil Abercrombie earned a Bachelors degree in sociology from Union College in Schenectady in 1959. He moved to Hawai‘i in 1959, enrolled at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, and earned a Master’s degree in sociology and his Ph.D. in American Studies. His career has been filled with a variety of occupations including a probation officer, a graduate teaching assistant, college lecturer, professor, construction apprentice program director, and special assistant to the State Superintendent of Education. Congressman Abercrombie began his public service in the Hawai‘i Legislature in 1974. Af-ter two terms in the State House, he served in the State Senate for eight years and chaired the Senate Committees on Higher Education and Human Services. He also served on the Honolulu City Council from 1988 to 1990. He was originally elected to serve out an unexpired term in the U.S. House of Representa-tives in a 1986 special election. He returned to Congress by winning election to a full term in 1990 and has been re-elected in every election since then. He ranks 41 among 236 House Democrats in seniority. He is currently Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Air and Land Forces, which oversees the Air Force and Army, and a senior member of the House Natu-ral Resources Committee, which has wide-ranging responsibilities over native people’s is-sues and our national parks, forests, wilderness areas, oceans, and the energy and mineral resources they contain.Congressman Abercrombie has used his seniority in Congress to establish relationships on both sides of the aisle and secure congressional authorization for more than $3 billion in Hawai‘i military construction projects, millions more for transportation infrastructure, and support for Hawai‘i’s visitor industry. The Congressman is also credited with securing federal funding for a variety of research contracts in Hawai‘i that have helped to grow the local high technology and alternative energy industries and overall state economy. He has been a tireless advocate for improving the quality of life for military personnel and their families, including military pay raises, better retirement benefits, health care im-provements, and modern housing. In 2007, Congressman Abercrombie was a leader in shifting military priorities, moving billions of dollars into an urgent program of building, equipping and transporting Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles to U.S. troops in combat in Iraq. These vehicles were designed to survive roadside bomb blasts and other attacks, and have been credited with literally saving thousands of U.S. lives. He also co-authored Blood of Patriots, a mystery novel focusing on the role of money in electoral politics, with Richard Hoyt. Congressman Abercrombie is married to Dr. Nancie Caraway who is also an author and educator.Congressman Abercrombie was an early and key supporter of President-elect Barack Obama. His ties to Obama date back to his college days when he attended classes with and befriended Obama’s parents, Ann Dunham and Barack Obama, Sr. He is the only member of Congress to have met Obama when he was a child.

Student AddressTara Anderson, the 2008 student speaker, is an English major with a passion for writing. She is also pursuing a minor in marine science and a Marine Option Program certificate.Born and raised in the small Alaska fishing town of Cordova, Anderson is a three-time member of the Dean’s list, a prolific writer and a member of UH Hilo’s newly formed Freedom Equality Movement club. Her commencement speech will focus on the capability and necessity for Hawai‘i to become sustainable and the responsibility of the graduating class to contribute to that effort.

A Message From The Student Association President“ Man’s dilemma---now and always--- has been that he misidentifies his own intellectual artifacts as reality. But these artificial suppositions are merely the products of an arbitrary point of perception. The inadequacy of the answers we receive is a direct consequence of the limitations implicit in the viewpoints of the questioner. Slight errors in the formation of questions result in gross errors in the answers that follow.”

- Dr. David Hawkins

There are many ways to educate a human. Rules and expertise can disconnect us from our intuitive knowing. Self-discovery on a micro and macro scale is being published in “how to” manuals. Our “education has been primarily spelled out in textbooks and instruction manuals.” I want to see a re-awakening in humanity which will regenerate our connective understanding within the whole. We need to emanate knowledge from our intuitive core. I love the word, emanate. It is a word that suggests glowing power from an inner source point. To emanate is to find alignment with purpose and natural divineness. I picture a person with an amber glow filtering through their skin and creating an aura of rays.Education is the individual’s connection with the whole. It is a privately public experience. Education must start in our source and emanate to the world around. Keep the connection strong.

Lani Dawn Thru-FinePresident, University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Student Association

Academic Regalia & ProcessionThe wearing of academic gowns, mortarboards, hoods and tassels originated in Europe during the Middle Ages and since the end of the 19th century, it has been an integral feature of the commencement ceremonies in the United States. Here at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, we also continue the tradition of marching in academic regalia. Indeed, the colorful procession of faculty is marked by distinctive caps and gowns from universities worldwide, the velvet facing of the hoods indicating the specific field of study. Similarly, the color of the tassel worn by today’s graduation candidates reflect their major.

The Star-Spangled Banner

Poem by Francis Scott KeyMusic by John Stafford Smith

Oh, say, can you see by the dawn’s early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh,say, doesthatStar‐SpangledBanneryetwave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Hawai‘i Pono‘iMusic by Henri Berger

Lyrics by David Kaläkaua
