Ua Ao Hawai‘iWords by Larry Kimura Chant melody by Kalena Silva
Kau e ka wena o ke ao i ka lani
The announcement of dawn appears as a glowing streak upon the heavens,
He wekeweke i ka pö pilipuka
It is a narrow opening in the darkness heralding the day,
He ‘elele o ka poniponi hikina
It is a messenger of purple glimmer from the east.
Kau ke kähe‘a wana‘ao i ka ‘äla‘apapa
Streaks of red stain long cloud formations,
La‘i ana i luna o ke kükulu o ka lani lä
Reposing serenely upon the pillars holding up the heavens;
‘O ka‘u ia e huli alo nei i ka ulu ë
I turn to gaze upon this, focusing on growth and the rising of a new day,
‘Ae, ua ao ë.
Yes, day has arrived.
Hö mai lä kö mälamalama
Bestow upon us your radiant light
I ka honua nei i ka mauli ola
Here upon the earth, filled with the spirit of life.
Ua ao Hawai‘i ke ‘ölino nei
Hawai‘i is in the brightness of day, it shines, brilliant
Mai ka pi‘ina a ka welona a ka lä
From its boundaries from the east to the west.
Kähiko ‘ia i ka ‘ike manomano
It wears as its finery a myriad of knowledge,
Ka ‘ike köli‘u mai o kikilo mai
Of deep insight from the depths of antiquity.
‘O ka‘u nö ia ‘o ka pülama
My sole duty is to embrace and to cherish,
A pa‘a ma ka ipu o ka ‘ike ë.
So it may be firm in the repositories of enlightenment.
‘Ae, ua ao ë.
Yes, day has arrived.
He mele no Hawai‘i ua ao.
This is a poem for Hawai‘i which has seen the light of day.

The University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Student Association, in cooperation with Sodexho Campus Services, cordially requests the pleasure of your company at
a reception at the Campus Center Plaza immediately following this commencement ceremony.
Music to be provided by the Richard Lee Ensemble.
Keynote AddressMr. Howard Dicus has been a radio broadcaster since the age of 17, reporting on four radio networks: AP Radio, the Mutual Broadcasting System, UPI audio and National Public Radio.
Since moving to Hawaiÿi he has become one of the state’s most recognized individuals in the business community through his extensive work in print, radio and television. As the Web and Broadcast Editor for Pacific Business News (PBN), Mr. Dicus writes most of the local business stories that appear on the PBN website, which he also airs live each weekday morning on KHON TV and Hawaiÿi Public Radio (HPR).
Mr. Dicus separately writes, produces and hosts the weekly television program “PBN Friday” on PBS Hawaiÿi (KHET) featuring interviews with members of the local business community, workers and entrepreneurs. He also files technology and economic reports which air on WTOP Newsradio in Washington, D.C.
Howard’s love for broadcasting and journalism has led him to pursue other interests within the field. While with United Press International, he reviewed books and CDs, and even wrote a humor column. He also recently began hosting a Saturday morning classical music program on Hawaiÿi Public Radio, called “Howard’s Day Off.”
Student AddressMr. Melvin Abadilla Jadulang is a graduate of Kohala High School and came to UH Hilo in the fall of 2001. Since then he has made the Dean’s List eight times, was awarded the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Leadership Scholarship, and in 2003 was named a UH System Presidential Scholar. Melvin has maintained a 3.6 G.P.A. throughout his years at UH Hilo, and received an honorable mention in USA Today’s 2005 All-USA College Academic Team.
Mr. Jadulang’s campus activities include serving as a senator and secretary for the UH Hilo Student Association (UHHSA), which twice recognized him for outstanding contributions. A vocal advocate for minority groups such as the Filipino community and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Intersex and Queer Community, Melvin has served as President of the Bayanihan Filipino Cultural Club, and as President of PRIDE, the on-campus LGBTIQ and friends organization. He also serves as a Peer Assistant and Tutor for the College of Agriculture, as a web designer for the University’s student newspaper, and as a volunteer assistant in the UH Hilo Admissions Office. In addition to all this, he is the Special Projects Manager for the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
Equally active in community affairs, Melvin is a board member of the Hawai‘i Future Farmers of America Foundation, a state-wide coordinator for DECA and FFA high school programs and a member of the National Association for Agriculture Educators. While attending college Melvin successfully started a program coordination and consulting business called Makaku Designs, and he plans to continue growing his business after college.
Melvin will be graduating with a degree in Communications and a Minor in Agriculture. His commencement address will focus on the choices students make and their impact on the future.
A Tribute to Haunani BernardinoMs. Haunani Bernardino was a Professor of Hawaiian Studies in Ka Haka ‘Ula O Keÿelikölani College of Hawaiian Language, until her passing on August 27, 2006.
Haunani took great delight in a wide variety of interests, but language, music and cultural study were her forté. While completing a B.A. in German at UH Mänoa, she began serious study of Hawaiian language, music, and culture both at the University and in the community with several of the foremost Hawaiian scholars and musicians of the 20th Century.
In 1990, after completing a Masters in Education, Haunani joined our UH Hilo family, bringing with her a deep knowledge of Hawaiian, rigorous scholarship, and by her example, an ability to inspire students and fellow faculty across disciplines.
Her academic and artistic legacy remains a treasured part of the University. “Pulelo Haÿaheo,” a song composed by Keÿelikölani College faculty in honor of the University and set to music by Haunani, has become an integral part of our commencement program.
In her final weeks, Haunani’s thoughts turned to a beloved Hawaiian hymn, “Hoÿonani I Ka Makua Mau,” also known as the “Doxology” or the “Old One Hundredth.” Discovering that the hymn has several verses in English but only one in Hawaiian, translated by Hiram Bingham, an early 19th Century missionary, Haunani set for herself the task of composing a second Hawaiian verse and arranging the entire hymn in four-part harmony.
Haunani explained, “My hope was to write four lines that were worthy of the magnificence and grandness of the first verse, while also reflecting a Hawaiian point of view. Therefore, I looked to the natural world and the things that grace our universe: the earth, ocean, sky, the stars and the heavens. Thus, Künou Haÿahaÿa Ko Ka Honua was created and is gratefully dedicated to those voices of the UH Hilo choral group, Kealohaonälani.”
This hymn gave solace to Haunani in her final days and gives us the pleasure of remembering a good colleague, teacher, and friend.

The Star-Spangled Banner
Poem by Francis Scott KeyMusic by John Stafford Smith
Oh, say, can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say, does that Star‐Spangled Banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Hawai‘i Pono‘i Music by Henri Berger Lyrics by David Kaläkaua

Parents, Relatives and Friends,
To find your graduate after the commencement exercises, look for the first letter of his or her last name which is posted on the outside walls of this gym. Congratulations to all of you!
Academic Regalia & ProcessionThe wearing of academic gowns, mortarboards, hoods and tassels originated in Europe during the Middle Ages and since the end of the 19th century, it has been an integral feature of the commencement ceremonies in the United States. Here at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, we also continue the tradition of marching in academic regalia. Indeed, the colorful procession of faculty is marked by distinctive caps and gowns from universities worldwide, the velvet facing of the hoods indicating the specific field of study. Similarly, the color of the tassel worn by today’s graduation candidates reflect their major.
