Inergen 200 Bar Equipment & Components

Inergen Containers

Inergen is a mixture of Nitrogen, Argon andCarbon Dioxide gases and has been speciallydeveloped to provide fire protection as a Halon1301 replacement. Inergen extinguishes fire byreducing the oxygen level in a room to below15%, the point at which most combustibles will no

longer burn. Simultaneously, the Carbon Dioxidein Inergen stimulates the uptake of oxygen by thehuman body, so protecting anyone who might betrapped in the fire area from the effects of thelowered oxygen levels.

Inergen is stored in gaseous form. It thereforedoes not produce fog when the gas is releasedinto the room. Because Inergen is a mixture ofnaturally occurring gases, it does not formdecomposition products in a fire.

The release head II is the connecting componentbetween the Inergen valve and the actuatingdevices (solenoid actuator, pneumatic actuator orlocal manual actuator). The release head containsa release pin which is pushed down by theactuating device. The solenoid actuator is used to electricallyoperate the container valve. The solenoid isoperated at 24Vd.c. (power consumption - 15Watts) and rated to IP65.It is fitted onto the Release Head II by means of aknurled swivel coupling which enables the unit tobe positioned as preferred for electricalconnection.The solenoid actuator is normally fitted to thecontainer designated as the ‘Master’ or in a twinrelease assembly configuration, the first twocontainers. The actuator is an electro-mechanicaldevice which when energised causes the central

The twin release arrangement is based on thecombination of an electrical and pneumaticrelease for dual master container operation.Under normal operating conditions both valveswill be actuated electrically. Twin Release Arrangement

This version of the solenoid actuator is used toelectrically operate the container in the same waythat the standard actuator does, but it is providedwith protection to EEx me II T4, IP65. Thesolenoid is operated at 24Vd.c. (PowerConsumption - 9 Watts) and is available in othervoltages and/or types of current rating.It is fitted onto the release head II by means of aknurled swivel coupling which enables the unit tobe positioned as preferred for electricalconnection.The solenoid actuator is normally fitted to thecontainer designated as the ‘Master’ or in a twinrelease assembly configuration, the first two

containers. The manual release actuator (local) is used tomechanically operate the system at the containerlocation.Accidental operation is prevented by means of asteel safety pin. The steel safety pin must beremoved to allow the use of the local manualactuator. After removing the steel safety pin,manual operation is caused by pushing the leverdownwards.The unit is designed so that it may be fitted

The standard container pressure indicator (DKE-4) indicates the Inergen pressure inside thecontainer. It is fitted to the pressure gaugeadaptor of the container valve. The connectionnut of the pressure indicator contains a pin whichopens a seal on the pressure gauge adaptorwhen the pressure indicator is firmly attached tothe valve. Fitting and removal of the pressureindicator can be carried out without loss ofInergen.

Container Pressure Indicator - Standard (DKE-4)

The pressure switch is mounted in the distributionpipework and may be used to provide anelectrical indication of the release of Inergen or toperform ventilation shut-downs or other interlockfunctions.It is designed to be mounted downstream of thepressure reducing unit and must not be mountedbefore it.The pressure switch requires to be manually resetfollowing operation.A minimum pressure of 3 bar is required toensure satisfactory operation. Connections to thepressure switch are either 1/2” NPT (male) or 1/8”

Pressure Switch (Manual Reset)

The supervisory container pressure indicator (KM-2) indicates the Inergen pressure inside thecontainer and allows for a signal to be providedwhen the pressure falls below a set point. The setpoint is adjustable between 100 and 240 bar, andit is recommended that it is set at a pressure of185 bar. It is fitted to the pressure gauge adaptorof the container valve. The connection nutcontains a pin which opens a seal on thepressure gauge adaptor when the pressureindicator is firmly attached to the valve. Fittingand removal of the pressure indicator can becarried out without loss of Inergen.The set point can be adjusted by removing the

Pressure Switch (Automatic Reset)

Manifolds are used on all multi-containerarrangements and are designed to allow theinstallation of single, double or triple rows ofcontainers into a single manifold. The manifoldsare available in two lengths to suit a maximum ofeither six containers - 560mm, or nine containers -840mm. The manifolds have opposite handedthreads at each end (right hand/left hand), so thatthey can be connected easily and safely in situ, using the standard high pressure fittings.

NOTE: When the manifolds are used on a singlerow of containers a six port manifold will onlysuffice for two containers and the nine port foreach set of three containers.On double rows, a six port manifold will becapable of handling up to four containers and anine port manifold up to six containers. Themanifolds may only be used up to their fullcapacity in triple row arrangements.

A number of high pressure fittings are availablethat have been specially designed to allow fortheir installation in the ‘high pressure pipework’between the manifold, the pressure reducing unitand distribution valves. The fittings are providedwith left and/or right handed threads to allow theiruse in a number of positions in thepipework/manifold arrangement. The availablefittings are based on multiples of a standarddimension of 280mm, which is the distancebetween container centres.All fittings are pressure tested to 320 bar.

The vent valve is used in the actuation line ofsystems where an unintentional build-up ofpressure, perhaps through a leak, could beproblematic. Pressure Reducing Units - Multiple Container Systems

The distribution valve is used in applicationswhere multiple areas require to be protected froma single bank of containers.The valves are operated pneumatically by a pilotcontainer (P/C SL 93462) or manually by use ofthe manual operating lever.The distribution valve requires a minimumpressure of 50 bar to satisfactorily operate it andthe precise configuration of the actuation systemis critical in ensuring that the system operates asintended. The actuation port is 1/4” NPT (fitadaptor P/C SL 93486 to allow connection to theactuation tubing).

The Inergen pressure relief valve is designed toautomatically relieve excess pressure in thepipework system. A valve is normally fitted in all‘closed’ sections of pipework, ie. between thecontainers and stop valves, etc. It is set to openat approximately 250 bar.It is a requirement that the outlet from the valve ispiped to atmosphere away from personnel. Amanual by-pass valve must be incorporated intothe pressure relief arrangements to allow fortrapped Inergen to be safely vented toatmosphere.

The pilot container release solenoid is used toelectrically operate the pilot container. Thesolenoid is operated at 12Vd.c. (CurrentConsumption - 0.57A). It is fitted directly onto thetop of the pilot container valve by means of ahexagonal swivel coupling which enables the unitto be positioned as preferred for electricalconnection.NOTE: The central pin must be in the retractedposition before the solenoid is fitted otherwise thepilot container valve will be operated and willdischarge immediately.

Pilot Container Release Solenoid

The pilot container manual/pneumatic adaptor isused to operate the pilot container eithermanually or pneumatically. It is designed so that itmay also be used in conjunction with the pilotcontainer release solenoid in which case it isscrewed onto the top of the solenoid actuator.Accidental manual release is prevented by meansof a steel safety pin. The steel safety pin must beremoved to allow the use of the actuator.When pneumatic operation is required a minimumpressure of 2.1 bar is provided to the pneumaticactuation port. (Connection to this port is 1/4”NPT).

The Odouriser 2000 is an optional device,designed to give a distinctive smell to the Inergenand is particularly useful in basements or lowlying areas in the vicinity of the system or anyplace where Inergen could drift to following adischarge.Liquid citrus odour is contained in the body of theodouriser and is sealed in by a lead disc.Pressure of the discharging Inergen causes thedisc to rupture and allows the liquid to escapeand mix with the Inergen. The odouriser must bereplaced after each operation of the system.Connection to the pipework is 15mm (1/2”) NPT(male).

FM200 Containers - LPCB Approved

FM200 (HFC 227ea) is known chemically asHeptafluoropropane. FM200 is a colourless gaswhich is liquified under pressure for storage. LikeHalon 1301 it has a low toxicity level and is super-pressurised with Nitrogen to 24.8bar (360psi). Itrapidly extinguishes most commonly found firesthrough a combination of chemical and physicalmechanisms.

FM200 contains no bromine or chlorine andtherefore has zero Ozone Depleting Potential(ODP). The atmospheric lifetime of FM200 isbetween 31 and 42 years which along with its’ODP presents a long term solution to fireprotection requirements.FM200 has been found to be less toxic than Halon1301, which makes it safe for use in the fullyautomatic mode in occupied areas.

Typically FM200 requires a design concentrationof 7.5%, which is well below the 9% NoObservable Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL). TheNOAEL for Halon 1301 is only 5% (the same asthe design concentration).

The solenoid actuator is used to electricallyoperate the container valve and is operated at24Vd.c. (Power Consumption - 4.8 Watts).It is fitted directly onto the top of the containervalve by means of a knurled swivel couplingwhich enables the unit to be positioned aspreferred for electrical connection.When fitting it is only necessary for the unit to behand tight.The solenoid actuator is normally fitted to thecontainer designated as the ‘Master’. Theactuator is an electro-mechanical device whichwhen energised causes the central pin to move

downwards opening the schrader valve in thecontainer valve.The central pin must be in the retracted positionbefore the solenoid actuator is fitted, otherwisethe container valve will be operated and thecontents discharged.The power lead fitted with a DIN plug forconnecting to the solenoid is to be orderedseparately (P/C 304.001.001).

The Flameproof solenoid actuator is BASEEFAapproved to Ex d IIB requirements and isoperated at 24Vd.c. (Power Consumption - 11.2Watts).The CENELEC/BASEEFA Approved Explosionproof version is available to order to meet EEx dIIC requirements.The solenoid actuator is fitted to a schraderassembly on the side of the valve body by meansof a brass swivel nut. It is designed to beremovable from the schrader assembly. As therewill be pressure in the brass swivel nut, uponremoval of the solenoid the pressure will bereleased. A ‘pop’ will be heard at the time ofremoval. It is essential that the schrader assembly

is not dislodged or removed as this will cause animmediate and potentially hazardous discharge ofFM200. It is recommended that at the time ofremoval all slave containers are disconnectedfrom the ‘Master’.NOTE: Earlier versions of this actuator were notdesigned to be removable from the containervalve and no attempt must be made to do sowhilst the container is pressurised, otherwise thiswill result in immediate and potentially hazardousdischarge of FM200.

Union AdaptorThe union adaptor is used to enable pipework tobe easily connected to and disconnected fromthe FM200 container valve outlet adaptor. The other end is provided with afemale NPT thread to enable pipework to beconnected. A swivel joint makes disconnecting

The pneumatic actuator is used where containeroperation is required by means of gas pressurefrom the system master container, remote manualrelease unit or from a pilot container. The T528 Manual Release Unit is used whereremote mechanical manual release of the FM200system is required.The unit comprises of a box with a hinged yellowlid which is held in the closed position by twofrangible washers. Inside the unit is a red barwhich is to be connected to a wire rope runthrough a system of conduit and corner pulleys tothe Remote Manual Actuator.Operation of the FM200 system using the T528 isa two stage action. Firstly the hinged lid is pulleddownwards towards the operator. This action willbreak the frangible washers and expose the redoperating bar. System operation is caused bypulling hard on the red bar. System discharge willoccur immediately.

The Remote Manual Actuator may be used tooperate the FM200 container from a remoteposition using the T528 mechanical manualrelease unit which is connected to the remotemanual actuator by wire rope run in conduit.A shear strap is fitted to help guard againstaccidental release. Operation is caused bymoving the lever through 90o, which will break theshear strap. The steel safety pin will preventoperation and is to be removed uponcommissioning of the system.

A BASEEFA Approved Supervisory PressureSwitch (P/C 305.205.004) is available to meet theEx d IIB requirements.A CENELEC/BASEEFA Approved explosion proofversion is available to order to meet EEx d IICrequirements.Both the Flameproof and Explosion proofversions are variations on the Flameproof andExplosion proof ‘gas discharged’ pressureswitches.It is recommended that the Flameproof andExplosion proof switches are wall mountedadjacent to the container.Connection to the switch is 1/4” NPT (female).

To fit the Flameproof or Explosion proof switchrequires connecting pneumatic actuation tubingbetween the supervisory pressure switch port onthe valve and the supervisory pressure switch.This process involves removing the plug from thesupervisory pressure switch port in the valve andquickly connecting the actuation tubing. Uponremoval of the plug it is normal for a smallquantity of gas to leak. The solenoid actuator is fitted to a schraderassembly on the side of the valve body by meansof a brass swivel nut. It is designed to beremovable from the schrader assembly. As therewill be pressure in the brass swivel nut, uponremoval of the solenoid the pressure will bereleased. A ‘pop’ will be heard at the time ofremoval. It is essential that the schrader assemblyis not dislodged or removed as this will cause animmediate and potentially hazardous discharge ofFM200.

The solenoid actuator is used to electricallyoperate the container valve. The solenoid isoperated at 24Vd.c. (Power Consumption - 4.8Watts).It is fitted directly onto the top of the containervalve by means of a knurled swivel couplingwhich enables the unit to be positioned aspreferred for electrical connection.When fitting it is only necessary for the unit to behand tight.The solenoid actuator is normally fitted to thecontainer designated as the ‘Master’. Theactuator is an electro-mechanical device which

The ‘S’ Type Nozzle is used in most total floodingapplications. It is normally recommended that thenozzles are uniformly positioned on the ceiling ofan enclosure to ensure a satisfactory distributionof CO2. Where it is not practical to position thenozzles on the ceiling, it may be acceptabledepending on the room dimensions to positionthem around the perimeter at high level.For CO2 total flooding systems there are no strict

rules governing the number of nozzles thatshould be applied to any type of hazard, however,nozzle spacing is dependent on the room height,flow rate, potential obstructions etc., but as a ruleof thumb, the nozzle may be used to cover anarea of approximately 30 square metres in a room3 metres high, the nozzle coverage table providesadditional guidance.
