Back to School = Back to the Library

Not only does September mean ‘Back to School’, it is also National Library Card Sign-Up Month. Children gain a sense of pride when they hold their own library card and are responsible for caring for their selections – why not sign them up today?

The public library is also a wonderful resource to support your children’s academic journey. Help your youngsters understand the benefits of the local library, encourage them to explore, and introduce them to the caring library professionals who are there to help them succeed in school and in life.

Little Read

This fall, the Library District coordinates the NEA Big Read, a community-wide reading program, for the twelfth year. While the adults and teens are reading Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng and American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang, we are offering two great books by Wendy Wan-Long Shang for younger readers. The Great Wall of Lucy Wu is a delightful story of sixth-grader Lucy Wu, an aspiring basketball star and interior designer (grades3-6). In The Way Home Looks Now, 12 year old Peter Lee and his father build a Little League team from neighborhood misfits (grades 5-8). Both books are available at the library.

Libraries are

STEAM Powered!

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics…but don’t tell the kids…they just think it’s fun! Public libraries across the nation are incorporating STEAM-focused programming for all ages, opening doors for kids to learn through play and creative building opportunities.

In a 2015 article on creating a community of tinkerers, Meredith Farkas writes “Children are naturally creative, so programs like this are rarely a tough sell. The challenge is to develop a culture that sees this sort of tinkering and creation as a lifelong pursuit. By providing tools and programming tied to STEM…libraries can play a vital role in fostering creativity, curiosity, and a community of tinkerers.”

At the Library District, you’ll find opportunities for elementary students to make a robotic hand and learn basic robotics with Lego WeDo. There are also programs for kids to explore machine works and physics by building a catapult and a moving sculpture. IBM volunteers regularly teach video game design at the library and teens learn computer coding. This fall we are offering a new series of technology-based programs in Spanish as well.
