I Can See Clearly Now
Zoom and Annotate images in Explain Everything for better live teaching.
Dr. Claire Elcock Paul JinksSchool of Clinical Dentistry
Why Images Matter
• First year dental students • Identify features of tooth formation on
images of microscope sections
Examples:
Teaching Format:
1.Lecture outlining features2.Workshop where students identify
features of images 3.Feedback to whole group going through
the images together
Previous ApproachWorkshop:
• In IT suite, students look at PDF/PPTs of images individually/pairs; seen before
• Teacher and PGRs support• Followed by feedback via lectern PC• Talk over of the images students have
viewed in PDF/PPT
Enhancing the Feedback PhaseThree initial concerns: 1.Enhance student engagement beyond
giving labelled ‘answers’2.Images very hard to zoom or annotate
quickly in PPT; cursor, transient3.Teacher PC facing away from students
Therefore difficult to respond visually to student questions or difficulties
The Set Up
Application connecting iPad to laptop over wifi is Airserver.
Walking and Talking
Use of iPad over wifi means can face the students, walk around, stand up!
Taking a Closer Look
• Pinch to zoom on iPad gives flexibility, control and spontaneity
• Live annotation of images means story can be built up around images
• No need for laborious preparation of animations!

What did the students think?
Students had:- 3 sessions using PDF/PPT - 3 sessions using Explain Everything Therefore well placed to compare the two.
Student Evaluation
• Kahoot! for quantitative feedback • One to one semi-structured interviews for
qualitative feedback
The results were very positive…
Question Yes No %
Did you prefer the iPad presentation to PC approach? 62 2 97
Did you find zooming in and out on the iPad useful? 61 3 95
Did you find drawing on the image useful? 62 2 97
Did you find the teacher's freedom to move around the room useful? 56 9 86
Did you think the quality of explanation is better using the iPad? 52 8 87
Would you recommend the use and development of this method? 61 3 95
Student Opinions
Zooming images and annotating in real time mean it is “easier to follow and make notes”.
“The iPad is 100% better. Much easier to follow”
“presentations are interactive and fun”
How could this approach be improved?
Record the presentations Suggestions around technique (colour selection etc.)
All interviewed students said they would like this approach to be used in image-based presentations.
Potential for Development
• Give iPad/s to students to discuss• Record annotation and explanation• Individual student use • Group work• Assessment
In Summary
• Easy to use • Allows a more fluid presentation• Flexible, responsive and iterative• Students find it engaging and clear
