Media rich feedback using Explain Everything and MOLE

Aidan Hoggard | Architecture

““While it is possible to transcribe

spoken comments into written form, we

posit that it is in hearing our voices that

students are engaged in the

conversation”

Thompson, Lee (2012)

““I can’t tell you how many times I’ve

gotten a paper back with underlines and

marks that I can’t figure out the meaning

of.”

(UG student)

Why video feedback?

▷Conversational▷Personal ▷Expressive▷Discursive as opposed to directional▷Engages with visual submissions▷Live annotation on submission▷Ability to include visual references

SWOT analysis(Both of video feedback and Explain Everything as

the platform)

Strengths

▷ Enables rich media feedback to be produced▷ Fairly easy to learn▷ Enables detailed annotations▷ Copes well with large files and images▷ For some staff better and easier than typing▷ High levels of student satisfaction - student feedback

so far excellent▷ Engages the learner in feedback as discursive rather

than directive

Weaknesses

▷Needs an iPad Pro▷Audio quality relies in iPad mic▷Need a quiet space to produce▷Video download/ upload is slow in EE

Threats

▷Can be time consuming if not careful▷Can be tiring on the voice

Opportunities

▷Could allow for interim, informal formative feedback to students▷The approach can now be taken forward in

Kaltura with better MOLE integration (see my presentation from earlier in the week)▷Adds a more personal and conversational

tone for distance learners
