new chapter was written in Johannesburg,South Africa. In June of 1986, Gloria and Iwatched religious history unfold as 22 dis-

ciples, both blacks and whites sent out by theBoston Church, flew into Johannesburg. Whilethe two of us were there just for the first service, the 22 disciples came to live and to plant achurch that would demonstrate love betweenthe races in the midst of apartheid, the cruelphilosophy and law of the land that separated theraces. Since then, apartheid has died, but theJohannesburg Church of Christ with a regularSunday attendance of 2,000 – half blacks and halfwhites hugging and singing together – hasbecome a beacon of light for the Dark Continent. On August 13, more history was made, but this

time, it was notjust religious. That Sundaymorning, thelargest multi-racial meetingever held inSoweto met at

Vista University.

Over 5,000 people from morethan 70 nations gathered inthe university arena to wor-ship the God of all races.

Seventeen hundredleaders from more than 200churches around the worldgathered in Johannesburg forthe five-day 1995 World MissionsLeadership Conference. The excite-ment of seeing friends from so manyplaces and the expectation of taking our faith, zeal and dreams to new heights was immediatelysobered by a reminder from Satan that he is stillthe arch-enemy.

The first message that each of us receivedas we checked into our hotel was a printedwarning that read: “Alert! Alert! Four discipleshave already been robbed! This is a dangerousarea! Under no circumstances go outsidealone. Do not leave the hotel without a policeescort. Do not wear jewelry, designer sunglasses, rings or watches outside the hotel. If you areasked by a robber to hand over anything – DOIT – be humble. Do not scream, resist, or dosomething suddenly – you will either be knifedor shot. Do not take this notice lightly – this isyour life!”

Our first day there a local man was shotdead in front of the hotel. The second day a

bullet from a high-powered rifle torethrough the window of a disciple’s roomon the 28th floor, ricocheted off the ceil-ing and went through the door. God pro-tected His disciples and none of us wereinjured all week. But the sense of dangermade everyone aware of the seriousnessand urgency of our mission to seek and tosave a lost, angry, desperate world.

I have been to countlessseminars, workshops andconferences since becom-ing a disciple. This onestands alone as the mostsignificant. Steve and Lisa

Johnson, Mike and Anne-Brigitte Taliaferro and the

Johannesburg Church of Christwere tremendous hosts. Every-

thing was done excellently. The signif-icance of the event went far beyond the city, thefacilities, the preparations and the hospitality. The impact was primarily due to the growingsense of awareness that we are watching Godmake history among the nations, using hiskingdom, made up of unworthy servants, toaccomplish it. The speeches were not just out-standing, they demonstrated profound maturity, from Kip McKean’s keynote address to CoryBlackwell’s Soweto sermon. We were called toa deeper walk with God, radical preaching, personal fruitfulness, shepherding our people, complete unity, caring for the poor and needyand Christ-like unselfishness.

From the exhilaration of seeing the video ofPresident Nelson Mandela receiving the firstHOPE Unity Award, to the desperation of holdinga baby dying of AIDS and having nothing to offerhim but love, I am coming out of Africa a changedman. I come with exhilaration believing morethan ever before, that the Gospel will be preachedin our lifetime to every nation. But I also comewith the desperation of knowing that time is shortbecause the worldwide epidemics of AIDS and sinare taking many people down before they get tohear the good news. An urgently renewed com-mitment to God’s mission is coming out of Africato every nation. ■

NELSON MANDELA RECEIVES FIRSTANNUAL HOPE UNITY AWARD

n Thursday, August 10, 1995,Kip McKean, Bob and PatGempel and Dr. Mark

Ottenweller presented thefirst annual HOPE Unity Awardto President Nelson Mandela atthe official residence in Pretoria,South Africa, as Roger Lamb recorded theevent for KNN. Accompanying the award is a two-year, $50,000 graduate scholarship to theWharton School of Business at the University ofPennsylvania, rated as the number one businessschool in the United States. President Mandelawill select a South African student as recipientof the scholarship.

At the closing service for the World MissionsLeadership Conference on Sunday, August 13, atVista University, a KNN video of President Mandelareceiving the award was shown to nearly 5,000people, the largest multi-racial event in the historyof Soweto.

Nelson Mandela, recipient of the 1993Nobel Peace Prize, spent 27 years in prison for

his role in the struggle against apartheid. Electedas the first black President of South Africa in1994, Mandela displayed a lack of bitterness anda spirit of reconciliation that has allowed his newgovernment to undertake the most peacefulchange of rule in Africa’s history. The championsof peace for the twentieth century have beenGhandi, King and Mandela. It is most fitting thatthe first HOPE Unity Award was presented toNelson Mandela as the leaders of HOPE worldwideand the International Churches of Christ gatheredin Johannesburg.

The idea for the award was conceived by PatGempel, Director of Development for HOPE

worldwide, who mentioned it to Steve Johnson,ACES World Sector Leader and Director of the1995 WMLC. Kip McKean and the World

Sector Leaders quickly agreed and gavevaluable input to the idea. Steve then

designed and commissioned the sculpt-ing of the award. The Gempels

secured the scholarship andSteve raised the money tofund it. Jackie PerreaultGonzales, a disciple in the

L.A. Church working extensively in the movieindustry, sculpted the beautiful award. Dr. MarkOttenweller, Director of HOPE for the Poor inSouth Africa, diligently coordinated the arrange-ments with Mr. Mandela’s office.

The world is home to over five billionbreakable people, but we are over 70,000unbreakable disciples of Jesus, indestructible aslong as we hold on to our unity. The HOPE UnityAward is one more way we can share that unitywith the world, that they might know that we aresent from God, that he is the ruler of the universeand that he has a message for us to share withevery nation in our generation. ■

An old fable tells of a father who

handed his children a bundle of sticks

tied with a leather cord and gave them

the command, “Break it.” Strong as

they were, none of them could manage

the task and they handed the bundle

back to their father. He then untied it,

handed each a single stick, and said

again, “Break it.” This they easily did.

With an air of gravity and a pause

to help drive the point home, the

father advised his children,

“Unity gives strength.”

n the last six years we have grown incredibly inAfrica from the Johannesburg Church to 17 churchesin 10 countries with a combined Sunday attendance

of 9,500. Yet of the 94 countries around the world tobe reached by the year 2000, 36 are in Africa.

Deysi OguaghaLagos, NigeriaDeysi was born and raised inEcuador. Her family moved toNew York when she was ateenager, where she laterbecame a Christian. When shemarried Nigerian-born OneychiOguagha and they were offeredthe chance to return to his nativeLagos to lead the church there, shebelieved she was ready to go. Shewas tough. She had grown up, afterall, in a third-world country.

In her riveting lesson before 700women at the World Missions LeadershipConference, Deysi shared about beingunfazed at the prospect of washing clothesby hand and bathing in cold water. However,in Lagos there was often no water at all.Besides the scarcity of water and elec-tricity, the government police questionher and her husband every time theyleave their home, demanding toknow their business, harassing

them and threatening them. All of Nigeria is fac-ing political upheaval and violence and

Desyi sees dead bodies in the streetsevery day. Both she and Oneychi have

suffered from typhoid and her chil-dren have had malaria twice due to

poor sanitation and the prolifera-tion of mosquitos.

She described stay-ing up entire nights

fanning her sons’ un-bearable fevers because

they had no electricity forair conditioning.

But Deysi’s story isnot one of defeat. It is about

the victory of God grow-ing a church with anattendance of over 2500

in Lagos. She considersherself blessed to partici-

pate in suffering for thecause of Christ. In her own

words, suffering has made her “strong, tough and victorious.” She has learned the

secret of contentment: gratitude. As she closedout her life-changing sermon, Deysi

added, “When you are grateful, you do not focus on suffering,

you focus on solutions.” ■

he HOPE Youth Corps spread love and unityacross the world this summer. In July, twelvestudents selected by their World Sector

Leaders teamed up to serve in the HOPE clinic inBangalore, India. Jason Williams and AdriennePickett represented LA.

In August, a group of 130 teens from aroundthe world served the poor in South Africa alongside50 Johannesburg teens and teen workers. Johnand Irena Muir, newly appointed Johannesburgevangelist and women’s ministry leader, led theeffort with the help of 20 adult workers and 24teen “Tribe Leaders.”

Soweto, the famous township of 3-4 millionpeople, holds the heart of the HOPEwork of the JohannesburgChurch. The Youth Corps devotedtheir time and energy to four pro-jects: finishing the walls ofHOPE’s new AIDS clinic, caring forAIDS babies, tilling gardens for asquatters’ camp and evangelizing.

Baragwaneth, one of the busiest taxi stands in theworld with 200,000 people passing through eachday, was the fertile site for street preaching.Crowds gathered in amazement as they heardsongs and saw a unified multi-racial group ofinternational teens. Over 5,000 people were invitedto Sunday services at Vista University.

These young disciples powerfully displayedthe enthusiasm they share for their mission intheir inspiring, energetic 30-minutemusical performance prior to SteveJohnson’s message. Gratitude goes toSherwin Mackintosh who used all 170 teensto create the show.

Unity, love, service and sacrifice were allexpected benefits of the Youth Corps but severalof the Johannesburg teens put it best when theyshared that the visiting teens had given themcourage. Perfect love will cast out fear.

Olivia Garcia-McKean“I am totally FIRED-UP to be a part of the

Youth Corps!” God has blessed Olivia with joyful zealand determination. Impressed with her desire forexcellence, a relative offered financial assistance to

enable her to attend The BrentwoodSchool, a prestigious preparatory school

in Los Angeles. Olivia immediatelyearned a spot on the varsity cheer-

leading squad and the varsity tennisteam as an incoming freshman.

This kind of excellence represents the caliber ofteen disciples in the Kingdom.

Jason WilliamsJason, a junior in high school, was the only

speaker to receive a standing ovation in the middleof his speech when he shared his heart during theHOPE presentation at the World Missions LeadershipConference. Jason told how his work with the YouthCorps, both in Bangalore, India, and Johannesburg,South Africa, had changed his life. He gave the teens,

and adults, “a radical call to affect theworld for life.”

Sara Nader-EsfahaniSara displayed an incredible

talent for singing, dancing, and

speak-ing. This Iranian-born seniorfrom the New York City church pro-vided leadership on stage and as a

“Tribe Leader” among her peers.Expressing her gratitude, Sarasaid, “Only in God’s Kingdom

can teenagers make the impactthe Youth Corps will this year!”

She is determined to return toher final year of high schoolready to “pour herself out”

for God. ■
