Soap TrailerSoap TrailerName and times

In most soap trailers they will always say the time and name of the show, some are done with over voices however my research shows that teenage drama soaps such as mine are mostly shown on channels such as E4. Looking at how E4 create their trailers, they mostly use a group shot at the end with the E4 logo with the time and name of the show. Therefore I used this convention in our trailer.

Music

Music is new soap trailers will usually use modern music that fits the genre. I decided to use Jimmy Eat World – The Middle, this is a modern alternative song, with high energy.

Props and costumes

We used ordinary teenage clothes to represent teenagers such as jeans, t-shirts, coats and converse. We used a phone prop because teenagers are also very mobile absorbed.

Editing

Existing short soap trailers like mine made for TV adverts range between 30 seconds to 1 minute 30 seconds, therefore I made mine around 1 minute. Existing soaps trailers use quick edits with short sequences to create impact, drama and enigmas to compelling the audience into wanting to watch the show which is what I have done in our trailer.

(Slide 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11)Use:As you can see from the past 6 slides I have found the normal conventions in soap trailers, TV magazines and soap poster and I have based my products on these features. These include storylines, camera angles, camera movement, title (name and time), music editing, layouts, pictures, effects, captions, and other features, these all make the codes and conventions of existing soap trailers, TV magazines, and soap posters, I have used these in my products so that mine looks professional and realistic.

Challenge and develop:I have took a risk when making my magazine because I did research into different TV magazines, and while most of them did not use a “glow” effect around the main characters, “TV easy” does, and therefore I developed this in my magazine because I thought it made my magazine look more professional and appealing.I also challenged codes and convention in my soap poster. Most of my inspiration was from a “One Tree Hill” poster that I though matched the genre and atmosphere in my trailer. This included cropping into images of the main characters to emphasises their facial expression to create a dramatic atmosphere, I also edited the background black and used a gradient effect to make the character fade to make the poster seem more dramatic. However this is different to most other soap poster, however I think it would make mine stand out and look more appealing to it’s audience.

Audience

I think the target audience of teenagers between 13-19 years old, both genders are targeted well throughout our products. All the products use teenager representations with storylines that they can relate to.

Genre

Our genre for our trailer is teenager drama soap, you can see this through the way I created enigmas and drama through the trailer, the drama

I used the same main character from the soap trailer in the magazine and poster. I also carried the storylines in the trailer in to the magazine, these can also been seen in the poster. E.g. the pretend argument between Anna and Cathy fighting, is the main feature in the magazine and you can still see the pretend hated in Cathy while she's looking towards Ann in the poster.

However because of casting difficulties I could not use the people/actors I used in the soap trailer in my poster and magazine. I did this to the best of my abilities and used most of the same people however I had the use extra people that weren't in the trailer.

Page 14: Evaluations

Institution

We used the E4 institution to advertise our soap. This is because similar teenage drama like mine are shown on that channel, such as Skins and One Tree Hill. The channel also has the same target audience as us.

Brand

I think the main problem with the combination between my main product the soap trailer to my ancillary products is that there is no easily identifiable brand. If I had created a logo or title card for my the soap name then I could have used this as a brand symbol throughout my products. However we have taken the “Skivers” title from the poster and created some merchandise to develop our brand.

Additionally, comments that I have collected from fellow students and teachers is;Positive:Trailer:“The storylines used are similar to storylines in actual TV shows”“The trailer is fast pasted and creates tension. It would make the audience want to watch the programme”Magazine:“I think the magazine is similar to existing TV magazines in the layouts and pictures”“I like the use of colour in the magazine, it makes it look like an actual TV magazine”Poster:“The poster is very dramatic and looks professional”“I like the close up on the facial expressions it makes the characters stand out”

Negative:Trailer:“At times the music in the trailer is hard to hear or the voices are hard to hear”“The E4 sticker at the end is not placed correct”“Some of the scenes weren't as strong as others”Other:“I think the font for the poster doesn't match the rest of the poster”“The cast members don’t always match in the group shot, and the ancillaries”“There is no identifiable brand for the soap”

Questionnaire:Looking at the questionnaire I can see audience feedback are strong on;•The soap trailer storylines, camera, editing, and targets the audience.•The magazine has good layouts, pictures, captions, storylines, and effects.•The poster having good layouts, pictures, text effects, advertises the soap and targets the audience well.

However I can see the audience have less stronger opinions on the music used in the soap, the TV magazine advertising the soap, and the combination of the ancillary products to the main trailer.

Comments:Looking at the comments I can see my strengths in my project were the storylines, the editing, the TV magazine layout and pictures, colours, and the poster creates drama. And that the weaknesses seen by others were the sounds problems in the trailer, the E4 title at the end dislocation, the post font, the casting problems, and no brand.

Overall I have seen the audience feedback and think the main points of improvement are:•The sounds problems with the music and voice•Possible should have done some reshoots with a set cast•Advertise the “Skiver” show more in the TV magazine•Have an identifiable brand throughout the products.

To edit my Soap Trailer I use Premier elements 8

Capture:•To capture the footage for my soap trailer I used a tripod to steady my camera, otherwise I use handheld to create different effects.•I had a problem with the camera as I mostly used a DV camera that meant the footage was captured onto a tape, however a few scenes were captured on to a HDV card camera, this mean these scenes were widescreen while the others were not.•I could upload the footage straight from the camera

Edit:• I could edit the footage simply by dragging the clips, and cutting them where I wanted.•I could use multiple tracks/layers to match up my scenes and music at certain sections

Title:•I used Photoshop to edit a picture of an E4 label, and used text to insert my own soap name, I then save it as a jpeg.•It was easy to add the title at the end by importing the jpeg onto the footage on a new layer, placing it into place and this would appear over the footage.

Music:•I firstly went through songs and decided which one I wanted to use, then downloaded the song of the internet.•Once placed into the timeline I wanted to make it shorted by cutting out a few verses.•The at times I wanted the music to play full volume and to go quieter when the actors are speaking, we did this by pressing Ctr + click to create sound point that we could move to create fades.•We also did this on the video clips because sometimes the people spoke louder /quieter therefore we edited them so they were the same and audible over the music. We had some problems with not hearing the actors over the music.

Saving and Uploading:•Premier elements 8 could save my file as a movie file, as well as uploading straight to YouTube

To present my research, planning, ideas and products I used an online Blog.•I learnt to embed YouTube videos using html codes.•I also learnt to uploaded and work with pictures to my blog.•And could write annotation and essays on this blog.

I also used PowerPoint to create these evaluation question responses. I can also use slide share to upload this PowerPoint onto my blog.

I drew the pictures for my storyboard and used a scanner to create by storyboard and posted this on my blog.

I used Microsoft Publisher throughout my project.

To create my preliminary task of my animatic Snow comic; I used Published to create the storyboard, used a SD card camera to capture the footage from the computer screen, used Premier Elements to edit the footage, add music, add a voiceover, and upload to YouTube to be embedded into my Blog.
