Evaluation Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

Page 2: Evaluation question 3 + 2

The production process

When producing my product it would go through a production and publishing phase which follows 5 key steps.

• The process would start by thinking of ideas. This will help think of ideas on what the magazine will look like, who will be on the cover, what colours will be used, what genre and what the target audience is.

• The process would then move on to researching rival magazines that are already in the product. You would also have to think how similar your product would like to other magazines.

• After researching rival magazines, the process would then move on to producing flat plans of the magazine. This will help give a visual of the magazine and it would become easier throughout the process.

• The fourth step of the process would include constructing the magazine at an industrial size.

• The final part of the process would include distributing it to either a mainstream audience or a specific audience. This would depend on the target audience for the magazine.

Publishing

The target audience for my media product is young ‘indie’ and rock’ people. The target audience for my media product is very similar to the audience of Kerrang! and NME. These are both mainstream magazines. This then means that my magazine will be distributed to a wider mainstream audience. My media product could be distributed by Bauer Media group which also distributes similar magazines such as Kerrang!, NME and Q. These types of magazines are mainstream in music terms but are also niche in the age and the stereotypes. These products could also be distributed to larger retail stores such as HMV and WHSmiths. These media products along with mine could also be distributed to supermarkets.

Who would distribute it

• Bauer media group distribute similar magazines such as Kerrang! and NME. Along with Kerrang!, Bauer Media group also use a TV channel for Kerrang. This TV channel allows the company to distribute the music to a wider audience. It specifically targets young ‘indie’ and ‘rock’ people.

• Another Key area where music can be distributed is the internet. The internet is becoming more significant in the industry. The internet allows people to buy music online and download it. It also helps distribute the music to even wider audience. Social networking sites are also areas where music can be distributed. For example, MySpace was used by the Arctic Monkeys and there record label Domino Records. Through using MySpace, the band got noticed and soon had a number one single. By using the internet a wider audience can be reached and is a new increasingly popular way to distribute music.

• Bauer media group use a ‘familiarising’ technique in order to reach the audiences attention. This would have a massive impact as my magazine would become stronger and more appealing to the audience. It would also ensure that sales and an increase in popularity would increase.

Advertising

• My product could be advertised in many different ways. Just like Kerrang!, my magazine could be advertised through a TV channel which means it would reach a wider audience. Other ways in which my product can be advertised is through posters, gigs, radio stations and the internet. Through the internet my media product could be advertised on a online website. This could be a company website such as www.kerrang.com. This is a very effective way of advertising my product as it will reach a wider and more mainstream audience. Also, many more younger people are using the internet which means that more people will see my product advertised on the internet.

• Since my target audience is mainstream, using social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook would allow my product to bee seen by more people. This an effective way of advertising because it is free and it will reach a wider mainstream audience. I would also get my product advertised on radio stations, TV commercials and music shows such as Kerrang! And Scuzz.

Distributing my product

• When distributing my product I would want to distribute my product to supermarkets such as Tesco and Asda. I would also distribute my product to retail stores such as HMV and WHSmiths. This would allow my product to reach out to a wider mainstream audience. Another way in which I would distribute my product is online. I would provide an online service where people can buy my product online and it would allow people to subscribe to product. This form of distribution would usually be put on to a company website.
