Eva Perón¿Sinner or Saint?

IntroducciónSome would say that Eva Duarte de Perón is one of

the most notable and influential women of Latin America. She grew up in a poor family in the

suburbs of Buenos Aires, Argentina. She always dreamed of being an actress and would do

anything to meet and become friends with the people that would help her reach the top.

Eventually, she became first lade of Argentina, living in the Casa Rosada. During her time as first

lady, she created, among other things the Eva Perón foundation, an organization with the

objective of providing social assistance. Her death, July 26, 1952 brought the nation to its knees and

caused the people to analyze her contributions and detriments to argentine society. A question that

remains today, was she a sinner or a saint?

TareaYou will separate into groups of four people and each person will have a

specific role. You have to investigate your role and form an opinion about the

essential question, was she a sinner or a saint? As a group you must come to an

agreement in order to convince the argentine government, in other words

your teacher, that Eva Perón was, on one hand, worthy of sainthood, or on the

other hand, that she should be remembered as a sinner that stained our

great nation. Remember, it is your responsibility as an individual to support

your opinion so that it becomes the opinion of the group. You will present the decision of your group to the class and we are going to have a debate to

determine her destiny.

You will be graded individually on the information you find according to your role in the group

(bourgeoisie, military, descamisado, or woman). You should submit a typed report in Spanish with at least 5 major points that support the focus of your persona. You may present these points in

bullet format. For example, the woman should tell me 5 major effects of Eva's policies and politics on

women in Argentina. You should also write a concluding argument in Spanish (not to exceed 2

typed pages) telling me whether you think Eva was a sinner or a saint and why based on the

information you found and your persona’s point of view.

As a group, you must submit 1 stapled set of papers that includes each individual's

opinion. The top sheet of this packet of information should be your group's

consensus as to whether Eva was a sinner or a saint. You should have your group’s top 5 reasons for your decision in bulleted format followed by an explanatory argument (not to

exceed 2 typed pages) that describes why you are taking this position. This will serve as the basis for your presentation and debate in

class.

In class, we will have a discussion/debate to decide Eva's fate. Your grade for this portion of the project will be based on participation by your group

and you individually. Each group will choose a spokesperson who will present an "opening statement" that voices the opinion of your group,

backed by your research. You must have solid facts to back up your opinion. Each group member will be expected to speak two times in the debate.

ConclusiónSinner or Saint? The choice is yours

to make. However, there is no disputing the fact that Eva Perón

made some outstanding and outlandish contributions to

Argentina during her short lifetime. From the dirt roads of Los Toldos to the balcony of the Casa Rosada, Eva

left her unmistakable mark on Argentine society as well as the rest

of Latin America and the world.
