Located on the site of Tournai, Belgium’s ancient city walls, Shopping Centre Bastions first opened its doors in 1979 to offer visitors a choice of three shops. In 2012, Bastions began a major, multiyear expansion and refurbishment project to address their tenants and customers’ expectations and needs. The ambitious plan included the addition of an adjacent 12-unit retail park with 360 free parking spaces, a 17,600 square metre extension, a complete restructuring and expansion of the car park facilities, and a refurbishing of the existing mall. Today the development has a total retail space of 43,500 square metres, and houses 110 fashion, retail, and service outlets, including major tenants Bershka, Bel&Bo, and Zara, as well as providing free parking for 2,000 vehicles.

Smart Park is a unique Retail Park comprising three retail buildings and one restaurant building on a 91,000 square metre land plot located in the municipality of Spata near Athens, Greece. The open-air development also incorporates 30,000 square metres of high-quality public green space, to provide family recreation and outdoor activities that include a children’s fun park and playground, an outdoor cinema and stage, an archaeological exhibition area, a dancing water fountain, and ample relaxation and rest zones. Smart Park currently houses 60 retailers including major big box and category tenants combined with a variety of international and regional fashion and leisure brands, and can accommodate parking for 1,960 vehicles.

CascaiShopping is an established retail destination with 199 stores offering a diverse mix of fashion and lifestyle brands including 15 anchors, as well as 40 restaurants, and a 7-room cinema complex with IMAX theatre. The first phase of their major refurbishment project was the inclusion of the ‘Cascais Kitchen’—an innovative and enhanced food hall that evokes the welcoming feel of a traditional street fair or market. The second phase involved a complete re-thinking of the design and circulation of the centre’s interior, and included the relocation of elevators and escalators, the addition of sky lights, plants, trees and foliage, and the implementation of high-end materials in common areas and facilities, and on floors, sidings, and store fronts.

PEP is an established retail destination in south-east Munich and ranks amongst Germany’s best-performing shopping centres. Their two-year long, €85 million investment included the addition of approximately 8,000 square metres of additional space, and a comprehensive modernization of the existing centre’s interior design. In addition to a warm design palette, enhanced seating and lounge areas, and a unique lighting concept, the project included a refurbished plaza with a spectacular glass dome complemented by attractive lighting and design elements. The centre houses 138 premium shops and dining options, and counts amongst its newest tenants TK Maxx, Müller drugstore, Hunkemöller Lingerie, and the Bavarian region’s first Primark shop.

M1 Adana’s most recent expansion and redevelopment project included a redistribution of their existing centre space, 16,610 square metres of new construction, and the incorporation of open-air promenades, pedestrian alleys, and common areas. The ambitious project included right-sizing existing anchor tenant spaces to accommodate new retailers, and combined with the expansion, enabled the centre to nearly double their offering from 105 to 200 outlets. The open-air areas are fashioned after city streets and grouped into Fashion, Lifestyle, and Convenience Zones, allowing visitors to browse shop windows, have a meal or coffee, enjoy a live performance, watch their children at play, or quickly shop for and purchase daily necessities.

The €68 million refurbishment of Meadowhall, one of the UK’s leading retail and leisure destinations, was completed in December 2017. The project included removing service corridor bulkheads and high-level bridges to improve sightlines, the implementation of a natural cooling and ventilation system, and enhancements to shop fronts, common areas, and lounge areas. In total, 34 new UK and international brands were added during the refurbishment, including Michael Kors, Flannels, Urban Decay, Tag Heuer, Diesel, Nespresso, and Joe Browns’ first-ever bricks and mortar store. The project also generated more than €52 million of further investment from Meadowhall’s retailers, with 21 existing tenants choosing to upsize or relocate, and more than 30 others opting to invest in their stores.

Iso Omena undertook a 4-year long €270 million expansion and redevelopment project, to realize the new construction of approximately 40,000 square metres of gross leasable area. Highlights of the project include the addition of the 3,000 seat dining precinct M.E.E.T. (meet, eat, enjoy, together) the first of its kind in Finland, and a 6,000 square metre service square comprising a library, health centre, and other public services. Iso Omena currently offers more than 200 different shops, restaurants, and service units, 3,000 parking spaces, and houses the end station of Helsinki’s western Metro line, and a bus depot that facilitates up to 80 departures an hour during peak service.

Built on a former industrial site, Adigeo is strategically located on the main road between the motorway and the Arena, in the heart of Verona, Italy. The centre offers double-height glass shop façades to house an attractive mix of 130 Italian and International retail concepts on a total GLA of 47,000 square metres, and includes 11 major tenants—several of which are first to region, 21 restaurants and bars, and free underground parking for more than 2,000 cars. Adigeo was developed as part of Verona’s urban requalification project, and is the first shopping centre to be awarded a LEED platinum certificate in Italy.
