Principal’s ReportDear Parents/ Caregivers
After a very smooth start to the school year it has beenwonderful to get into classrooms and begin to get to know thechildren on both a personal and academic level. Relationshipsand communication are the key to a successful school andthese start in the classroom with individual teachers and theirstudents.
It was also really pleasing to see the number of parents whotook the opportunity to attend their child’s class informationsession – thank you for taking the time to meet your child’steacher and find out what is happening in the class for 2016.I am sure that you found the session informative and hopefullyyou are now a little more prepared for the year ahead.
Support and extension programs have now been finalised andwill commence this week. Keep an eye out for permissionslips for the various English and Mathematics IGNITE extensionprograms so that we can get each child into the program andlearning at their instructional level.

Attendance
In the last Newsmundi I indicated that the school would betaking a greater focus on the attendance of students. To assistthe admin in monitoring trends in this area we will be collectingweekly attendance data from classes. Students who are notattending school regularly will be identified and parentscontacted to discuss the matter by a member of the adminteam. Our target for 2016 is to achieve a 95% attendance ratefor the whole school which is very achievable. I am very pleasedto include in this Newsmundi current attendance data whichindicates we are well on the way to achieving this target. Welldone everyone so far! Please see below:
2015 Whole school Attendance DATA 92.6%
2016 Whole school Attendance DATA (current) 94.1%
Target 95%
Investing for Success (I4S)
Due to the significant success of our CONNECT Program in2015 the plan for our I4S funds for 2016 is very similar tolast year. Again the focus for the CONNECT team will be thefocussed on early intervention in the Prep to Year 2 area.Literacy and mathematics concepts will be the key areas forthis year including phonemic awareness, reading strategies, sound / letter relationships and early number and place valueconcepts. Using the I4S funding the school has purchased aMULTILIT intervention program for the use of students and willbe employing additional teacher aides to support the program. Please see the school’s website for additional details of thisprogram if you are interested.
School Hats
A reminder to all parents that school hats are an item of theschool uniform and as such should be worn to school each day. This rule applies to all students from prep to year six regardlessif the child intends playing outside or not during lunchtimes.Your support in ensuring that your child brings their hat alongto school each day is appreciated.
Have a great week.Mick

School Uniform Policy
I am very pleased to see that the majority of the children arewearing full school uniform to school each day. Parents are

Jewellery other than earrings (sleepers or studs) is notpermitted to be worn at school. This includes loom bandswhich do not form part of the school uniform. Parents are askedto please ensure that children are dressed in uniform each dayand follow the jewellery policy which can be found on the schoolwebsite in the Parent Handbook. Your support in this matter isappreciated.
Child Safety - Recognise, React, Report
With the need to keep our children safe never more prevalentin the media, parents are asked to please reinforce with theirchildren the need to recognise, react to and report any potentialchild safety issues which they may be exposed to whentravelling to and from school and during weekends. The safetyof our children is very important, and it is hoped that byensuring that all children understand how to respond to beingapproached by a stranger that serious incidents may beavoided.
Curriculum Report
NUMERACY FOCUS FOR 2016
By Julie Fitzsimon (Head of Curriculum)
As discussed last week in my column, all year levels at a primarylevel are covering a variety of key learning areas from English,Maths and Science to the Arts and Physical Education. Eachyear Eumundi State School has a different curriculum focus. For the last few years our school has focused primarily onareas such as writing, reading comprehension and spelling. For 2016 our major focus is numeracy. Being numerate doesnot only mean being confident in mathematics but developingknowledge and skills to use mathematics confidently across alllearning areas at school and also in their lives.
Try using maths at home with your children. Talk aboutnumbers, telling time, measurements, shapes etc. Askquestions beginning with “why? how? or explain that to me”.By using open-ended questions we are leading the childrento think and explain their answers and not just give a simpleanswer for a closed question. Also try to use real-life situations. For example, “If it’s 150kms to Brisbane, estimate how manyminutes it will take us to get there? If we travel at 100km/hourhow long will it take?” This may lead to petrol prices and usageand many more interesting real-life numeracy conversations. For the younger students discuss sharing, order, taller, shorter, patterns, days of week etc etc.
At Eumundi State School we are teaching all mathematicalstrands of number and algebra, measurement and geometryand statistic and probability, with the emphasis onunderstanding, reasoning and problem solving in our teachingand learning sessions.

Making a Splash at Eumundi’s SwimmingCarnival
Last week the colours green, yellow, blue and red took on awhole new meaning. Determination rose with a lust for victoryfor that shining gold trophy and for that blue first place ribbon. The war cries sent sound waves encouraging the adrenaline outof hiding.
“Racers ready!” yelled Mr Gemmell. The crowd went silentwaiting for the gun to fire. Each competitor stood withdetermination in their eyes. In a split second the gun pierced theair and the racers were off attempting to achieve their goals.
The pool was then a sudden splash of fierce competition. Whatwas once a glassy glimmering pool surface was no more. Eachchild pounced out of the water full of excitement. A sea ofbeaming smiles made their way over the marquee as theyprepared for the next race.
And we thought the kids were the ones that were the excitedones... Turns out the teachers were just as enthusiastic. MrConnors and Mr Kross were shouting into the microphone, MrGemmell and Mr Scott were monitoring the starting points andMr Brinkworth was pacing around time keepers in anticipation.
All in all, the event was very successful and at the end of the dayall competitors showed encouragement, sportsmanship anddisplayed an enthusiastic attitude. Well done to all!

IMPROVING OUR SENTENCES in Class 4M
Students in 4M have been studyinglanguage features in narratives. This weekwe looked at noun groups, powerful verbsand show, don’t tell. The following studentswere given a simple sentence-
The shed was dusty.
They then had to transform the sentence so that it painted apicture for the reader.
Dust clung to every surface. Cobwebs hung from brokenbeams. Rats covered in soot scurried across the dirt floor.Darkness was approaching as I searched for the doorknob. When was I ever going to get out of here…
By Emily.B
The incredibly dusty 19th century shed was sitting there likea block of damaged debris. As I opened the door, a revoltingsmell made its way to my nose. A mouldy disgusting ratscurried across the barren floor.
By Oliver.H
Crrrrreeeaaakkk! I pushed the tin door open. Poof! A wave ofdust hit me. Instantly, a revolting smell started climbing up mynose. Was it dead rats or dead snakes? I couldn’t tell. Whateverit was. I couldn’t STAND it! Cobwebs slid onto my face. Ratscreeped in the dark. I tried to squeeze through a thin passagewithout letting any mould or mist touching my body. I shivered. When would I get out…

DRAGONS and QUESTS Year 5S
What a fantastical start to the year! We have been reading EmilyRodda’s ‘Forests of Silence’ and producing some great piecesof creative writing, with dragons and knights being centrestage. ‘Sketch to stretch’ activities have produced someoutstanding pieces of artwork, and it has been pleasing tosee the students develop their vocabulary and spelling in thecontext of their written work. Our ultimate ‘Quest’ though thisyear is to learn from our mistakes, grow with them and developour number sense armour!
