    Paper code : ETCE 208 L T C

    Paper : Structural Design - I 3 1 4

INSTRUCTIONS TO PAPER SETTERS Maximum Marks : 75

    1. Question No.1 should be compulsory and cover the entire syllabus. This question should have objective or short answer type questions. Itshould be of 25 marks.

    2. Apart from question No.1, rest of the paper shall consist of four units as per the syllabus. Every unit should have two questions. However, student may be asked to attempt only one question from each unit.

    3. Use of relevant Indian Codes/Standards/Guidelines will be permitted

    UNIT I

Properties of hardened concrete: Effects of water cement ratio, compaction, age, curing on strength of

concrete. Compressive strength, grades of concrete, tensile strength, bond strength, stress strain

characteristics, modulus of elasticity, Poissons ratio, shrinkage and creep, durability, requirement for

material used in concrete as per I.S. code, permeability, chemical attack, Sulphate attack, resistance to

abrasion, cavitations, freezing and thawing, resistance to fire, marine atmosphere.

Basic design principles: Reinforced concrete design philosophies: Working stress design, Concept of limit

states. Limit states design, partial safety factors and Codal recommendations. Characteristic and design

values, factored loads, design stress strain curves.

Limit state of collapse: Flexure, shear, bond and torsion.

analysis of lintel beams.[No. of Hours: 10]

    UNIT II

Limit state of collapse: Compression: Braced and unbraced columns, behavior of reinforced concrete

columns, general design principles: Longitudinal and transverse reinforcement, Effective length of columns

    in building frames.

Limit state of Serviceability: Short term and long term deflection estimates and codal provisions, crack

formation in columns and beams and its control, crack width. Limit state for lateral stability, serviceability,

fire resistance, fatigue, durability in services life of structure.

and L shaped beams, lintels, design of beam for torsion, [No. of Hours: 10]

    UNIT III

Design of simply supported, cantilever slabs, one way and two way slabs, continuous slabs both one way

and two way, Design of staircases, Design of short columns under axial load.

    [No. of Hours: 12]

    UNIT IV
