From the Social Studies Archives…

Recent News The Social Studies department would like to extend a special thank you to all the parents and

other visitors that attended the History Fair on March 18th. This event featured over 60

research projects done by students in grades 6-8 centered in the theme of “Leadership and

Legacy.” Students participating in the event showcased and informed visitors on many

prominent and lesser-known African American figures spanning almost 400 years of American

history.

History Study Strategy: How to read historical texts When reading a historical text, it is important that you understand what you read. When

encountering a place, person or event that you do not know about, make a note of the item and

use other books, or resources to find out more.

Try to be critical about what you read. Secondary sources such as history textbooks are the

author's interpretation of past events. Different authors have different perspectives. If you

read enough secondary sources you may begin to see differences. This will help you to form

you own opinions.

Finally, seek to make personal connections with the events you read about. Historical events

are almost always inter-linked. Always refer back to what you already know or have

experienced.

Ernest Everett Just Middle School’s Art program is exploratory and conceptual in nature. Children are able to explore a variety of thinking processes, art forms, materials and techniques, and sources for inspiration such as observation, memory, and imagination. Students look at, talk and write about art from different cultures and times, as well as their own art and art of peers. Students use creative, critical and design thinking processes to solve problems or challenges to make meaning of their world. The visual art elective works in tangent with many core academic areas of study in terms of themes and context to build cross-cultural connections. We are continuously expanding in terms of media and themes in each sequential course. Throughout the program, students engage in various forms of communication, utilizing a rich vocabulary and a variety of technological resources. Students continue to utilize their art knowledge, while studying career options,
