RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

STEM Education for Underserved Students to Study Water Quality and Experience Field Techniques

Developed a field curriculum for high school students as a graduate student working with the Chair of UNCW’s Department of Biology and Marine Biology, Dr. Christopher Finelli. This curriculum was designed to meet all of the qualifications of STEM and common core’s essential standards while addressing the National Science Education Standards. This project helped science teachers to educate their students within their curriculum and to train them as young scientists, while promoting stewardship and conservation through the initiation of a long-term data collection program on coastal ecosystem health. The project entailed North Brunswick High School students taking monthly field samples, observations, and measurements of a local estuary while testing student created hypotheses. During each field trip the students gathered data using field-sampling techniques and perform water quality tests in the field and in the classroom. Data collected by the students was used to test how certain factors affect the health of an ecosystem such as increased CO2 affecting the pH of water, runoff affecting the water quality and watershed life, turbidity and oxygen concentrations of the water. In this research project students collected data, compiled it into an online database, and performed analysis of the data. This project helped to introduce the scientific method, field techniques, technology, and other STEM initiatives to underserved high school students who lacked these skills or the resources needed to experience these skills in the field. In addition the project helped students become better stewards of the environment while enjoying science and possibly encouraged students to pursue science degrees and careers.

Developing Lessons for Students through Adults on the Ecology of Masonboro Island, NC

Assisted in the creation of a field curriculum for formal and informal educators on Masonboro Island, NC. The curriculum included lesson plans, activities, and assessments for wide ranges of student age and abilities to include extensions and differentiation strategies. All lessons were coordinated based on the NC Standard Course of Study and Essential Standards of the Common Core. This project introduced students through adults to the ecology of Masonboro Island and the unique NC Barrier Islands. In addition, this project helped students become better stewards of the environment while enjoying science and possibly encourages them pursue science degrees and careers.

Case Study Research of Student Athlete’s Patellar Tendonitis and Experimental Treatment

The opportunity to participate in research involving a human subject and an experimental medical treatment arose as an athletic training student working with a university soccer athlete who had been plagued by patellar tendonitis. All of the protocol treatments were not working, and the athlete signed up for an experimental study with a physician, Louis Almekinders, MD, with University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Almekinders worked with head athletic trainer, Dr. Mike Perko (UNCW), Dr. John Sutton of Wilmington Orthopeadic Group, two other athletic training students, and myself to develop treatment protocols for this athlete. Documented his recovery and treatments and presented his case study at an undergraduate symposium presentation on May 17, 2003, during the 25th annual District 3 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers Symposium. This research helped me to understand how to work with a case study, HIPAA laws, and within a team of researchers while following a lead researcher’s protocols.

Measuring Mass and Size Changes of Fish Otoliths at Different pHs

Independent research project under the supervision of Dr. Thomas Lankford, Associate Professor at University of North Carolina at Wilmington. The research involved measuring the mass loss and size decrease over time of otoliths in different pH solutions. This research was not presented but was performed to be used in conjunction with research of

dolphin stomach contents. This research involved working independently, designing research methods, time management, and reflecting on ways to perform the research better and to expand the project to new areas of research.
