Good Afternoon. My name is Scott Goodell I am work with the SEIU UHW Education Fund and I coordinate our Environmental Training Program, otherwise know as ETP. In a nutshell, ETP is a frontline worker training program to help hospitals reduce their environmental impact through participatory education to support leadership development and process improvement. We are very proud of our successes and are eager to expand our work where unions and employers are willing to work together for specific outcomes that support the Triple Bottom Line.

Presentation Notes
The Environmental Training Program is a ETP came about initially in 2011 through a grant from the Department of Labor (DOL). The program engaged frontline workers, their departmental-level managers and supervisors, their unions at all levels, and the operational leadership of the institutions in which they worked. EVS workers were targeted for the training because of their key role in waste management, the use of cleaning chemicals, and their mobility and presence throughout the facility, which put them in an excellent position to be the eyes and ears of a hospital initiative on greening health care. It was successfully implemented in 4 regions across the country, representing 11 employers and 5 unions and Post-grant period, the SEIU-UHW Ed Fund was able to continue and expand the program to the MM and FANS departments at LAMC, and we have since moved the program to two new facilities, KP Baldwin and soon at Fremont.

Presentation Notes
We aren’t there to train in the traditional sense, rather provide a lens for them to see their work in a different light and improve their impact on healthcare delivery. At the central tenet to our ETP program is worker engagement and empowerment in all facets of the program. Specifically, workers play an active role in the implementation of programs and policies that support a more environmentally friendly health-care system, and also contributed ideas and projects aimed at improving the triple bottom line.

College Certificate
ETP- Key Components
• Prepares a small group of motivated frontline workers to co-facilitate training modules to their peers
• Participants often assume leadership roles
Worker Engagement and Leadership Development
Train the Trainer Goal: Develop worker-trainers as institutional resources to support current and future
training in their departments.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
The TTT introduces principles of adult learning, co-facilitation, and presentation, and provides extensive opportunities to practice these skills in a supportive environment. Trainers also learn techniques for working with adult English language learners and participants with low literacy. At the conclusion of this training, the teams are prepared to deliver the 7 modules. Moreover, these trainers become institutional resources to support future training in their departments and throughout the hospital

Workers learn why change is happening, the impact on themselves and their jobs, AND have a say in how it gets enacted Participatory Education model grounded in principles of adult learning Connecting new knowledge to the needs, concerns, and experiences of adults Reflecting on their own life experiences and draw connections between work, the health of patients, environmental sustainability, And cost savings Workers learn to see themselves as change agents and as critical thinkers with a voice in the process

EVS Training Modules- 90 min
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Modules follow a standardize structure that guides them through the learning process of introducing the topic, reflecting on their own experience with the topic, learning new information through participatory activities, and an assessment. Seeing Green is an introductory module which introduces the concept of “greening” EVS work and builds basic understanding of why environmental sustainability is important to healthcare and the community. Talking about Green is the communication module, helping participants practice the essential skills necessary for communicating about change in different areas of the hospital and for creating an inclusive, respectful learning environment. Reduction of Waste focuses on the difference between waste and trash, methods of handling materials, and how proper handling, disposal, and the use of recycling can reduce hospital costs and reduce the negative environmental consequences of waste. Water Conservation explains how EVS workers can help the hospital lower water use while minimizing the release of toxic waste into the environment. Energy Conservation helps participants understand how energy can be saved at the hospital and at home and how energy conservation impacts costs and the environment. Reduction of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) introduces EVS workers to their own key roles in reducing infection through proper cleaning and disinfecting. Greening Our Work outlines health and safety concerns around toxic chemicals and “green” products, and also lists ways to reduce the risk of workplace injuries when moving, lifting, pushing, and pulling.

Presentation Notes
-IBEST model - Representatives from KP (Tim, Abraham, Leroy) attended a two day meeting they helped shape the design of the course. - Sustainability in Healthcare is designed as a credit bearing certificate course that uses problem posing and problem-solving learning as the central learning lens through which incumbent healthcare workers learn how to apply the various concepts and competencies - Problem Identification: Identification of a green issue, challenge or opportunity that currently exists in a hospital/healthcare environment that an incumbent worker can play a leadership role in helping to implement and that will positively affect the triple bottom line (planet, people and profit/ cost savings). Course Core Competencies: 1. Problem Posing and Problem Identification 2. Communication 3. Leadership in Project Development 4. Sustainability Knowledge 5. Metrics and Measurements 6. Organizational Knowledge Core Competencies Defined:

Greening Healthcare and Advancing Careers
Overall Impact of ETP: • Increased awareness of front line
workers’ role in creating a sustainable environment and quality healthcare system.
• Improved labor-management relationships and department moral
• Participants became aware of the need for change and creative problem solving
• Reduction of the hospital’s carbon footprint and cost savings (help need with internal tracking)
